Trump travel ban won't hit Los Angeles Olympics: organizers
Los Angeles 2028 Olympics organizers said Thursday the Games will not be impacted by President Donald Trump's ban on citizens from 12 countries from visiting the United States. Casey Wasserman, chairman of LA28, the 2028 Olympics organizing committee, told a press conference the US government had made it "very clear" that Trump's travel directive would not apply to the Games. Trump's travel directive announced late Wednesday bars all travel to the United States by nationals of Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo-Brazzaville, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. Wasserman said, however, he was confident that all athletes and members of the Olympic movement would be free to travel to the United States in 2028. "It was very clear in the directive that the Olympics require special consideration, and I actually want to thank the federal government for recognizing that," Wasserman said following the conclusion of a visit from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission. Wasserman said the broad constituency of the Olympic movement -- from athletes to federation officials and media -- would not be affected by the ban. "All the constituents that you know so well that come to the city pre-Games and during the Games -- it's very clear that the federal government understands that that's an environment that they will be accommodating and provide for," Wasserman said. "So we have great confidence that that will only continue. It has been the case to date, and it will certainly be the case going forward through the Games." Wasserman's bullish appraisal was echoed by Nicole Hoevertsz, the chairwoman of the IOC Coordination Commission. "We as the IOC have every confidence in the fact that the local authorities and the federal authorities understand that bringing the Games to your country is a big responsibility," Hoevertsz said. "It is 206 countries that are preparing to come to the Games ... and the federal government has given us that guarantee in the past as well, to make sure that these these participants will be able to enter the country. "That is something that we will be definitely looking at and making sure that it is guaranteed as well ... we are very confident that this is going to be accomplished." rcw/bb

Olympic champ Imane Khelif skips Eindhoven event after World Boxing introduces mandatory sex testing
EINDHOVEN, Netherlands -- Olympic champion Imane Khelif is skipping the Eindhoven Box Cup in the Netherlands less than a week after World Boxing announced mandatory sex testing for all athletes. The Algerian boxer, who won gold at the Paris Games last summer amid scrutiny over her eligibility, did not register in time for the event before applications closed on Thursday. 'The decision of Imane's exclusion is not ours. We regret it,' tournament media director Dirk Renders told The Associated Press. Khelif had intended to return to international competition at the tournament in Hotel Eindhoven before World Boxing announced its new sex testing policy last Friday. Eindhoven mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem criticized World Boxing's decision. 'As far as we are concerned, all athletes are welcome in Eindhoven. Excluding athletes based on controversial 'gender tests' certainly does not fit in with that,' Dijsselbloem wrote in a letter addressed to the Dutch Boxing Federation and International Boxing Federation. 'We are expressing our disapproval of this decision today and are calling on the organization to admit Imane Khelif after all.' Khelif won a gold medal at the Paris Olympics last summer amid international scrutiny on her and Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting, another gold medal winner. The previous governing body for Olympic boxing, the Russian-dominated International Boxing Association, had disqualified both fighters from its 2023 world championships after claiming they failed unspecified eligibility tests. But the IBA was banished for decades of misdeeds and controversy. The IOC ran the past two Olympic boxing tournaments in its place and it applied the sex eligibility rules used in previous Olympics. Khelif and Lin were eligible to compete under those standards. World Boxing has since been provisionally approved as the boxing organizer at the 2028 Los Angeles Games and has faced pressure from boxers and their federations to create sex eligibility standards. Its president, Boris van der Vorst, apologized after Khelif was singled out in the governing body's announcement last week. Khelif planned to defend her gold medal at the LA Games, but some boxers and their federations have already spoken out against her inclusion.

Adam Silver's Team USA vs. World Announcement Should Excite Victor Wembanyama Before NBA All-Star Game
Adam Silver's Team USA vs. World Announcement Should Excite Victor Wembanyama Before NBA All-Star Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As the NBA becomes increasingly global, the San Antonio Spurs and superstar Victor Wemanyama are at the center of the league's growth. While players like Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and even Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are better players (for now), Wembanyama has by far the most potential and is easy to market. Advertisement In an effort to draw viewership to the dying All-Star Game, commissioner Adam Silver announced that next season would feature an official "USA vs. World" format. "Next year, as part of our new media deals, the All-Star Game returns to NBC, where it was when we were younger," Silver outlined on Fox Sports. "And it so happens that next season will be smack in the middle of the Winter Olympics." The NBA, while not officially involved with Team USA's run to gold in the Paris Olympics, found a lot of success showcasing their talents on the international stage. With the Winter Games adding to international sporting events, the league wants to continue to capitalize on that. "What better time to feature some form of USA against the world?" Silver asked. Advertisement Jokic, SGA, Giannis, Luka Doncic, and Wembanyama all seem like locks to represent the world team, and Wemby, likely, will be named a starter in an oversized lineup. Wembanyama made his first All-Star Game this season before blood clots ended his year prematurely, and he offered six points and four rebounds in a shorter format than previous years. With Wemby a lock for the All-Star Game next season, he will have a chance to show that he is the next face of the league in possibly his last matchup against LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant.
