Gareth Bale: Former Tottenham and Real Madrid winger set to front Plymouth Argyle takeover
Gareth Bale is set to be the face of a potential takeover of League One side Plymouth Argyle. The former Wales international, who spent much of his career with Real Madrid and Tottenham, retired from football in 2023 as a five-time Champions League winner. Advertisement Having dabbled in punditry since hanging up his boots, he could now be set for a full-time return to the game. The Telegraph reports that he has joined up with a US-based private equity group which is in talks to purchase a controlling stake in the Pilgrims. Plymouth, who were relegated from the Championship at the end of last season, are reportedly searching for new investment as they look to revitalise the club. Current chairman Simon Hallett, who became a majority shareholder in 2018, is leading that search, and saw a deal to sell a large stake fall through last month. Speaking at the time, he said: 'Negotiations have taken too long and the key information that both we and the EFL required to complete the deal has not been forthcoming. I no longer believe that news of the new investor is imminent." Advertisement The new investment group would become the latest in a long line of Americans taking over British clubs should their deal go through. Premier League sides Chelsea, Bournemouth, Liverpool, and Crystal Palace are all under whole or partial American control, while actors Rob McElhenny and Ryan Reynolds famously took over Wrexham in 2021. Bale briefly played in the MLS, ending his career with 12 appearances for LAFC, though The Telegraph's report says it is not clear how he became involved in the bid. The news follows the April announcement that Real Madrid and Croatia legend Luka Modric would become a minority owner of Swansea City. The 39-year-old will make his final appearances for Los Blancos at the Club World Cup this summer, with AC Milan keen to sign him on a free transfer following the tournament. Bale retired with 111 international caps and is the most successful Welsh footballer of all time.

Rory McIlroy becomes first player to automatically qualify for 2025 European Ryder Cup team
Rory McIlroy becomes first player to automatically qualify for 2025 European Ryder Cup team One of the stalwarts of the European Ryder Cup team is officially locked in for the 2025 competition at Bethpage Black. Rory McIlroy, the No. 2 golfer in the world and Masters champion, became the first golfer to automatically earn a spot for captain Luke Donald's Team Europe, it was announced Monday. He will make his eighth consecutive Ryder Cup appearance at the biennial competition, scheduled Sept. 26-28 in New York. McIlroy locked up his spot with two months of the qualification period left thanks to four wins since the European points list began last August. "It's always a huge honor to represent Europe in the Ryder Cup, so it means a great deal to have qualified for my eighth in a row and to be part of Luke's team again at Bethpage," McIlroy said. 'Rome was such an incredible week with the environment Luke created, and I can't wait to be back in the team room. 'Winning a Ryder Cup away from home is one of the biggest challenges there is in golf. We know it is going to be tough in New York, but we are all looking forward to that challenge in September and the opportunity to potentially do something special.' McIlroy, 36, has won 18 points in his seven Ryder Cup appearances. The automatic qualification period for Team Europe ends Sunday, Aug. 24. The top-six players on the European rankings at the conclusion of the Betfred British Masters will secure their spots automatically on Donald's 12-man team for the 2025 Ryder Cup, with Donald's captain's picks coming Monday, Sept. 1. 'Rory has once again been in superb form this year and I'm really pleased to welcome him to Team Europe as our first automatic qualifier for Bethpage," Donald said. "Clearly it is great to have the reigning Masters champion on your team, but Rory also has a wealth of Ryder Cup experience, and that is going to be important for us as we know how tough the challenge is going to be in New York." As it stands now, the other automatic qualifiers for Team Europe would be Tyrrell Hatton, Shane Lowry, Robert MacIntyre, Sepp Straka and Rasmus Hojgaard. 'I'm now looking forward to seeing how the other players perform over the next two months and seeing who joins Rory in the other automatic qualification spots," Donald said. Two weeks ago, Scottie Scheffler became the first automatic qualifier for Team USA.

‘Medical Passed' – Sky Sports Confirm Crystal Palace's Next Signing
Crystal Palace Closing In on Experienced Stopper Walter Benítez Crystal Palace are on the verge of securing the free transfer of Argentine goalkeeper Walter Benítez, with the deal expected to be finalised within days. As reported by Sky Sports News' Michael Bridge, the 32-year-old has 'passed a medical over the weekend' and will join on a free from PSV Eindhoven when his contract expires at the end of June. Advertisement This move marks one of Oliver Glasner's first major signings of the summer, signalling a clear intention to reinforce depth and experience within the squad as preparations ramp up ahead of the 2025/26 season. Crucially, the decision to bring in Benítez has been made 'regardless of Europa League outcome', according to the report. Experience and Reliability Between the Posts Benítez is a seasoned professional with an impressive CV. Having previously excelled at OGC Nice in Ligue 1, and more recently at PSV, he brings with him a wealth of top-flight and European experience. His calm presence, commanding style and strong shot-stopping abilities will be valuable assets to a Palace side that looks to build on their strong finish to the 2024/25 campaign. Photo: IMAGO Advertisement While current No.1 Dean Henderson has been mostly impressive since arriving from Manchester United, Glasner is clearly planning ahead. Whether Benítez comes in as a backup or serious competition, his arrival promotes healthy depth and sends a message that standards must remain high. Glasner Planning Bigger Squad for European Demands One of the most significant takeaways from Sky Sports' report is Glasner's intention to bolster his squad size ahead of a potential European campaign. Palace fans are still basking in the glow of a brilliant end to last season that raised hopes of continental football. The addition of Benítez fits into this strategy neatly. The rigours of Europa League or Conference League football necessitate a squad with depth, rotation options and experience. Benítez, with nearly 400 career appearances, including European matches, checks those boxes emphatically. Free Transfer Business Shows Smart Strategy Bringing in a player of Benítez's calibre without a transfer fee represents smart business by sporting director Dougie Freedman. With the financial constraints that come with FFP and the need to maintain squad balance, free agents like Benítez offer great value if chosen carefully. Advertisement It also shows the kind of joined-up thinking that has been emerging at Selhurst Park since Glasner took over. Recruitment is being done with tactical flexibility and squad resilience in mind. There is no hint of panic, only precision and planning. Our View – EPL Index Analysis From the perspective of a Crystal Palace supporter, this feels like a major statement of intent. Walter Benítez is not just a backup signing. He is a proven top-level goalkeeper with the composure and nous to slot into a Premier League side without skipping a beat. Dean Henderson has been solid, but let's be honest, we've had our nervy moments. With Benítez coming in, the pressure is now on every keeper in that dressing room to stay sharp. This kind of internal competition can only lift standards across the board. Advertisement It also shows Glasner is not resting on the feel-good factor of last season's finish. He's building a squad that can thrive in Europe and not just scrape by. Benítez's experience at PSV and Nice means he knows what it's like to play midweek in Europe and then on a Sunday in the league. It's a smart, low-risk, high-reward move. And it tells us Palace are no longer here just to survive — we're building to compete.
