Royal Challengers Bengaluru landed another key blow in the IPL 2025 final as Romario Shepherd dismissed Punjab Kings' Shreyas Iyer, further tilting the contest in RCB's favour.
In the 10th over of Punjab's chase of 191, Shepherd bowled a short-of-length delivery outside off stump. Iyer, looking to force the pace, attempted a cut shot but only managed a thin edge. Wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma took a sharp catch behind the stumps.
Interestingly, the appeal wasn't upheld by the umpire, but Iyer, showing great sportsmanship, chose to walk. He departed for just 1 off 2 balls, leaving Punjab in trouble at 79/3 after 9.4 overs.
At the halfway mark of the chase, Punjab Kings still need 112 runs off 62 balls, with the required run rate climbing. With three wickets already down, the pressure is mounting as RCB's bowlers tighten their grip on the final.

TNPL 2025, ITT vs CSG: Comedy of errors helps Chepauk Super Gillies steal two runs amid confusion
By News Desk Published on June 6, 2025, 21:48 IST Chepauk Super Gillies found an unexpected moment of luck during the 7th over of their chase against IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans in the Tamil Nadu Premier League 2025 match at Coimbatore on Thursday evening. At the end of seven overs, Chepauk Super Gillies stood at 71/2 in pursuit of a target of 174. The equation read 103 runs needed from 78 balls. Vijay Shankar (2 off 2 balls) and Baba Aparajith (15 off 14 balls) were at the crease when a comedy of errors unfolded on the final ball of the over. Sai Kishore, who had just dismissed Mokit Hariharan earlier in the over, delivered the last ball to Vijay Shankar. Shankar played the ball with soft hands and called for a quick single. The fielder came in and attempted an underarm throw at the keeper's end, hitting the stumps directly. However, the ball ricocheted off the stumps and rolled towards the third-man boundary. Both batters were caught mid-pitch in a classic case of yes-no hesitation, unsure whether to attempt a second run on the overthrow. Meanwhile, the wicketkeeper quickly retrieved the ball and fired it towards the bowler's end. In another twist, Sai Kishore failed to collect the throw cleanly, giving the batters enough time to complete the second run. The chaotic sequence brought some light-hearted relief to the contest and helped Chepauk Super Gillies inch ahead with an additional run. At the end of the over, Chepauk Super Gillies were 71 for 2 in 7 overs with Baba Aparajith on 15 (14) and Vijay Shankar on 2 (2). Sai Kishore completed his over with figures of 2-0-15-1. News desk at

Indian police arrest two after deadly cricket stampede: reports
Indian police arrested two people including a senior executive at Royal Challengers Bengaluru, reports said Friday, after 11 fans were crushed to death during celebrations for the team's first IPL title. Hundreds of thousands packed the streets in the southern city of Bengaluru on Wednesday to welcome home their hero Virat Kohli and his RCB cricket team after they beat Punjab Kings in the final of the Indian Premier League. But the euphoria of the vast crowds ended in disaster when 11 mainly young fans died in a stampede near M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where the players were parading the trophy. Karnataka state's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said Friday he had directed police to arrest the representatives of RCB, event organisers DNA, and Karnataka State Cricket Association. While there has been no official confirmation of the arrests, Siddaramaiah said a first information report, which marks the start of a police investigation, had been "registered against them". Media outlet India Today said that Nikhil Sosale, RCB's head of marketing, was arrested at Bengaluru's airport. The Indian Express newspaper also reported Sosale was arrested along with an executive from an event management company. The deaths have sparked widespread anger, and top police officers including the city's police commissioner have been suspended. Local media reported that the accusations include culpable homicide, not amounting to murder, among others. There was no immediate comment from RCB. - 'Made to pay' - Siddaramaiah, who only uses one name, also pointed the finger at some senior police. "These officers appear to be irresponsible and negligent and it has been decided to suspend them," Siddaramaiah said. The dead were aged between 14 and 29, and were among a sea of people who had poured onto the streets to catch a glimpse of their heroes. RCB offered financial aid of $11,655 to each family of the victims, calling the deaths "unfortunate". Indian media have widely reported the team earned $2.3 million in prize money alone for taking the title on Wednesday. Kohli, who top-scored in the final, said he was "at a loss for words" after the celebrations of a first IPL crown turned to tragedy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the accident "absolutely heartrending". Siddaramaiah has said that the stadium had a capacity of 35,000 people "but 200,000-300,000 people came". Deadly crowd incidents are a frequent occurrence at Indian mass events such as religious festivals due to poor crowd management and safety lapses. "The grim truth is that the fan, who drives the commerce of every sport, is the last priority for administrators," The Hindu newspaper wrote in its editorial on Friday. "Asphyxia was the primary cause of death besides injuries suffered in the stifling rush," it added. The pioneering IPL sold its broadcast rights in 2022 for five seasons to global media giants for an eye-popping $6.2 billion, putting it up amongst the highest-ranked sport leagues in cost-per-match terms. "The world's richest cricket tournament can't cut corners when it comes to fans' safety," the Indian Express newspaper wrote in an editorial. "A fitting tribute to those dead, therefore, is not mere signing a cheque but holding those in charge responsible -- ensuring that heads roll, and those who dropped the ball Wednesday are made to pay." ash/pjm/fox

Indian police arrest four people in connection with deadly cricket stampede
Police in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru have arrested four people after a stampede during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) cricket team's Indian Premier League victory celebrations killed 11 people and injured at least 47, local media reported. Three people from an event management company and one official from the RCB team were arrested on Friday, according to local media reports. Media outlet India Today said Nikhil Sosale, Royal Challengers Bengaluru's head of marketing, was arrested at Bengaluru's airport. The Indian Express newspaper reported Sosale was arrested along with an executive from an event management company. There was no immediate comment from RCB. Tens of thousands of people had packed the streets of the city in the southern Indian state of Karnataka on Wednesday to welcome home their hero Virat Kohli and his RCB team after they beat Punjab Kings in the final of the Indian Premier League. As the team was celebrating with the trophy inside a stadium in the city, thousands of people tried to push through the gates, leading to a stampede. The franchise said later the incident was 'unfortunate' and pledged one million Indian rupees ($11,655) to each family of the 11 fans who died. The deaths have prompted widespread anger and top police officers have been suspended. On Thursday during a news conference, Karnataka state's chief minister Siddaramaiah, who only uses one name, criticised the suspended officials. 'These officers appear to be irresponsible and negligent and it has been decided to suspend them,' Siddaramaiah said. The chief minister also said 'legal action has been taken against the representatives of RCB,' as well as the event organisers and the state's cricket association. He noted that a first information report, which marks the start of a police investigation, had been 'registered against them'. Kohli, who top-scored in the final, said he was 'at a loss for words' after celebrations of a dream first IPL crown turned to tragedy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the accident 'absolutely heartrending'.Stampedes occur frequently in India, mainly at religious events, but it was the first time in 45 years that fans had died in a crush at a sporting event, local media said. India's head cricket coach Gautam Gambhir said on Thursday he did not support such roadshows and celebrations. 'Celebration is important. But more important than that is the life of any person. So, if we are not prepared or if we can't handle the crowd in that way, then we might as well not have these roadshows,' Gambhir told reporters. The pioneering IPL sold its broadcast rights in 2022 for five seasons to global media giants for an eye-popping $6.2bn, putting it up amongst the highest-ranked sport leagues in cost-per-match terms.
