Former Seattle Pilots and Mariners righthander Diego Segui dies at 87
SEATTLE (AP) — Diego Segui, a pitcher who appeared in the first game in franchise history for the Seattle Pilots and was the starter for the Seattle Mariners in their first game, has died. He was 87.
The Mariners said Segui died Wednesday. No additional details were released.
Segui played for the Pilots in their first game on April 8, 1969, against the California Angels. He was the starter for the Mariners in their opener on April 6, 1977, in the Kingdome against the Angels.
'Our thoughts are with the Segui family, including David, Diego's son, who the Mariners know well from his time with us in 1998 and 1999,' Mariners president of business operations Kevin Martinez said in a statement. 'Diego was always generous with his time, visiting us in Seattle to help us celebrate milestones, including his last trip here for Hispanic Heritage Day in 2012.
'I also have fond memories of Diego's grandson Cory throwing the final pitch in Kingdome history, a fitting finale for the Kingdome after Diego's historic first pitch.'
Segui pitched in 15 major league seasons with the Kansas City/Oakland Athletics, Washington Senators, St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox, in addition to both Seattle franchises.
The 6-foot, 190-pound right-hander from Holguin, Cuba, led the American League in ERA in 1970, and finished his career with a 92-111 record and a 3.81 ERA in 639 games.
After wrapping up his major league career, Segui pitched in the Mexican Professional League until 1984. He is a member of both the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum and the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame.
In 2024, he was honored by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum with its Negro Leagues Beisbol Lifetime Achievement Award.

Pitcher Max Scherzer calls his return for the Blue Jays a good check mark
CLEVELAND (AP) — Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer pitched five innings and gave up three runs Wednesday night in his first appearance for the Toronto Blue Jays since March. 'That's a good check-mark sign,' Scherzer said. 'Maybe something that you look for as you're coming back and as you're ramping back up. So good in that regard. In terms of actually pitching, a little rusty. I could execute better. I pitched good, I didn't pitch great.' Scherzer gave up six hits and three walks on 83 pitches with four strikeouts after recovering from an inflamed right thumb that caused him to go on the injured list. The Blue Jays wound up losing 5-4 in 10 innings to the Cleveland Guardians. The next step will be determined based on how his thumb feels Thursday because thumb problems can lead to shoulder issues. 'It's been frustrating as heck to be dealing with this for really the third straight year,' Scherzer said. 'I finally get back out here get pitching again get that adrenaline boost. you just don't get that in the minor leagues.' The 40-year-old Scherzer threw his most pitches since last July 25, throwing 55 of 83 pitches for strikes. He gave up a two-out double in the fourth, and a pitch-clock violation led to one of his walks. 'I made a bad pitch, so I'm not going to blame that on the clock,' Scherzer said. Scherzer finished with a scoreless fifth inning and a 4-3 lead. Monterrey advances to knockout rounds at the Club World Cup with 4-0 victory over Urawa
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Monterrey scored three goals in a 10-minute span of the first half and went on to defeat the Urawa Red Diamonds 4-0 on Wednesday night and advance to the knockout rounds in the Club World Cup. Monterrey finished second in Group E behind Inter Milan, which defeated River Plate 2-0 in a simultaneous game in Seattle. Monterry plays Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday at Atlanta in the round of 16. The match drew just 14,312 to the 89,702-capacity Rose Bowl. Nelson Deossa ripped the ball from 35 yards out that Urawa goalkeeper Shusaku Nishikawa got a hand on but couldn't stop in the 30th minute to put Monterrey up 1-0. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Joe Ryan won for the seventh time in eight decisions, Kody Clemens hit his ninth homer and Willi Castro drove in the go-ahead run as the Minnesota Twins beat the Seattle Mariners 2-0 on Wednesday night to stop a five-game losing streak. Ryan (8-3) allowed three hits in six innings, struck out eight and walked none to help Minnesota end a six-game home skid, its longest at Target Field since an eight-game slide from April 27 to May 20, 2016.
