Australian Open champion Keys and Badosa return to top 10 rankings

Gulf Today27-01-2025

Madison Keys' breakthrough at the 2025 Australian Open cemented her place among the sport's elite.
With consecutive wins over World No.2 Iga Swiatek and World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka, she captured her first Grand Slam title.
Her run sparked a surge in the PIF WTA Rankings, where she jumped seven spots from No.14 to No.7. It's her first time back in the Top 10 since January 2023, equaling the career-high she set in October 2016.
Ahead of making crucial changes to her racquet and service motion, Keys was asked by husband and coach Bjorn Fratangelo whether she was content to be a 'No.11 to No.25' player.
Despite over a decade of high-level accomplishments -- the Australian Open marked Keys' 10th career title, all but one at WTA 500 level or above, and her seventh major semi-final -- her ranking has rarely matched her peak form.
Keys first cracked the top 10 in June 2016 and mostly remained there until April 2017. But between that month and this week, she spent just seven weeks in total inside the Top 10. Now, Keys is on a 12-match winning streak -- the longest of her career -- and has the opportunity to bolster those numbers over the coming months.
Eight months ago, Paula Badosa was ranked No.140 and struggling to regain form following a back injury that sidelined her for the second half of 2023. But consistently strong performances earned her the Comeback Player of the Year award at the end of 2024, and after two previous quarterfinal losses, she reached her first Grand Slam semifinal last week at the Australian Open. The former No.2 climbs two places to No.10, returning to the Top 10 for the first time since October 2022.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinal in 2011. Fourteen years later, she's still got it.
The 33-year-old made her ninth major quarter-final, and fourth at the Australian Open, last week, and jumps nine places to No.23.
Meanwhile, world number one Jannik Sinner will not defend his ATP 500 title in Rotterdam as the Italian's 'body needs time to rest' after winning the Australian Open, tournament organisers announced on Monday.

Andy Murray to be honoured with statue at Wimbledon

Wimbledon will soon feature a permanent tribute to one of Britain's sporting greats, as the All England Club announced plans to honour Andy Murray with a statue at the iconic tennis venue. The 38-year-old retired in August after an appearance at the Paris Olympics and will get his own statue after ending Britain's 77-year wait for a home men's singles champion in 2013 when he beat Novak Djokovic in the final. Murray won Wimbledon again in 2016 and was knighted the next year for his services to tennis and charity. A popular player on and off the court, Murray reached world number one and claimed three Grand Slam singles titles during his career despite competing in an era dominated by greats such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic. "We are looking to have a statue of Andy Murray here (at Wimbledon) and we're working closely with him and his team," chair of the All England Club Debbie Jevans told the Ainslie + Ainslie Performance People podcast published on Tuesday. "The ambition is that we would unveil that at the 150th anniversary of our first championship, which was 1877. He's got to rightly be very involved in that and he and his team will be." The new statue would stand alongside that of Fred Perry, who was Britain's last men's singles champion until Murray's victory.

Osaka battles past Danilovic as Kasatkina bows out

Four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka fired 16 aces past Serbian qualifier Olga Danilovic to earn a 7-6(6) 7-6(4) victory at the Bad Homburg Open on Monday for her first win on grass this season less than a week before the start of Wimbledon. Wimbledon quarter-finalist Lulu Sun came to life on grass once again, ousting No. 1 seed and defending champion Daria Kasatkina -5, 2-6, 6-3. The 27-year-old Japanese player, who had lost in the first round at her last two tournaments — the French Open and the Berlin Open — had won her first title in May in almost two years following a maternity break. Osaka, who had reached the third round of the Australian Open in January before retiring injured, has not had back-to-back wins on any surface since the Italian Open in May. She is currently ranked 56th in the world. 'It's my first grasscourt win of the year,' Osaka said. 'I am excited about that. I am super excited to play here and be back for my next round.' Asked whether she was on track to improve her form on the surface, she said: 'I hope so. I think I have potential but everyone is really good so I cannot take it for granted.' The pair held serve to take the first set into a tiebreak where Osaka snatched it on her second set point. Osaka was 40-0 up on her opponent's serve at 2-2 in the second set but she could not bag the first break of either player in the match, with Danilovic holding serve with her eighth ace of the match. Osaka, however, got the mini-break she needed in the tiebreak when she challenged a Danilovic first serve that was then ruled out, with the qualifier then double-faulting. She held on to that slim advantage to earn a spot in the round of 16 where she will face fifth-seed Emma Navarro. Russian eighth-seed Ekaterina Alexandrova also eased into the next round with a 6-1 6-2 win over Swiss Belinda Bencic. Croatia's Donna Vekic made equally light work of sixth seed southpaw Diana Shnaider for a 6-3 6-3 victory. Meanwhile, Russian Roman Safiullin upset French fifth seed Alexandre Muller 7-6(5) 7-5 in a tight opening-round contest at the Mallorca Open on Monday, while Corentin Moutet overcame home favourite Pedro Martinez 4-6 6-3 6-0 to reach the round of 16. Raducanu praises Wimbledon for 'amazing job' of blocking stalker

Briton Emma Raducanu said she felt reassured about her safety after Wimbledon prevented a man who had been stalking her from buying tickets for the Grand Slam. The former US Open champion had been followed by the man to WTA events in Singapore, Abu Dhabi and Doha earlier this year and she broke down in tears after noticing him during one of her matches at the Dubai Championships in February. The man was given a restraining order by Dubai police and banned from all Tour events but officials at Wimbledon, which is organised by the All England Club, had to block him following a sweep of the public ballot applicants. "Wimbledon and everyone did an amazing job," Raducanu told the BBC. "I got a notification, the police contacted me and told me everything was OK. "I know that I'm not the first athlete to go through this, and I probably won't be the last - not just as an athlete, but females in general." The 22-year-old, who had not yet been born when then world number one Monica Seles was stabbed in the back by a fan at an event in 1993, said she felt much safer with extra security at events. "I have a lot more protection around me - especially the ones here in the UK, where it's busy and there's more spectators around. I feel a difference, and that reassures me and makes me feel more comfortable," she added. Raducanu also praised British number two Katie Boulter for sharing her experience of online abuse. "I try and not read the comments or look at the messages because it makes you upset," she said. "It doesn't matter how many positive comments you read, you are always going to remember the more negative ones - so I just try and stay away."
