Oregon legend Sabrina Ionescu dazzles in return to Eugene with New York Liberty
The Oregon Duck fanbase loves its legendary athletes to no end. Players like Marcus Mariota, Justin Herbert, Joey Harrington, Raevyn Rogers, Devon Allen, and many, many more can come through Eugene any given day and get a standing ovation from adoring Ducks.
It's quite possible that Oregon fans love no single former athlete more than they do Sabrina Ionescu.
As one of the greatest Oregon athletes of all time and the "Queen of Eugene," Ionescu has a perfect approval rating in the city. So much so that over the weekend, the Eugene mayor dubbed May 12 as "Sabrina Ionescu Day" in the city.
On Monday night in the New York Liberty's exhibition game against the Toyota Antelopes, Ionescu gave the sellout 12,364 fans at Matthew Knight Arena a reason to cheer.
The Oregon legend went off in the defending champions' exhibition game, scoring 25 points on 8-for-13 shooting, and 6-for-9 from deep. She also had three rebounds and two assists in an 84-61 win. Fellow former Duck Nyara Sabally also enjoyed the homecoming with seven points and six rebounds.
The title defense officially starts for Ionescu and her teammates on Saturday with a season-opener against the Las Vegas Aces. That game tips off at 10 a.m. PT and can be seen on ABC.

Sabrina Ionescu Acknowledged for Major WNBA History on Friday
Sabrina Ionescu Acknowledged for Major WNBA History on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The WNBA officially recognized Sabrina Ionescu's latest career milestone on Friday, celebrating her as the fastest player in league history to reach 400 made three-pointers. The achievement came during the New York Liberty's 86–78 win over the Washington Mystics on Thursday night. Advertisement According to league communications, Ionescu accomplished the feat in just 151 games — cementing her place in the record books and surpassing Crystal Robinson as the Liberty's all-time leader in 3s made. Even more impressive, she reached the mark on a night where her shot wasn't falling, going just 3-of-17 from the field. Despite the shooting woes, Ionescu's long-range presence helped propel New York to its eighth straight win and best start in franchise history. The 8–0 Liberty now join the Minnesota Lynx as the only two teams to open the season with such a streak—something that hasn't happened in the WNBA since 2016. Jonquel Jones exited early with an ankle injury, and it was Breanna Stewart who carried the load, delivering a dominant 26-point, 11-rebound performance. Meanwhile, reserves like Kennedy Burke (12 points on 4-of-4 from three) and Isabelle Harrison (seven points, five rebounds, two steals) rose to the occasion. Even with Washington clawing back in the final stretch, Ionescu and Stewart's late free throws helped the Liberty close it out. The performance capped off a night of balance, history, and growing momentum for a team with championship aspirations — and for a sharpshooter rewriting what's possible behind the arc. Dolphins Facing CB Battle Amid Jalen Ramsey News
Dolphins Facing CB Battle Amid Jalen Ramsey News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Heading into the offseason, every team has positional needs, and additions are made and departures occur. That leads to the positional battles in OTAs and minicamp to determine who will get the job, or at least temporarily, in the new season. Advertisement One of the most intriguing position battles for the Dolphins this offseason is the cornerback competition. The Dolphins will look to replace Kendall Fuller, who was released in February after playing his first season with the team, and Jaylen Ramsey, who is likely to be traded at some point this offseason. Both players were top 10 tacklers for the Dolphins in 2024. Ramsey had two interceptions, and Fuller had a forced fumble. Miami Dolphins cornerback Storm Duck (36) works out during mandatory minicamp at Baptist Health Training Navarro-Imagn Images The leading candidates to replace the duo are Storm Duck and Cam Smith. Duck is a second-year defensive back out of Louisville. As a rookie in 2024, he appeared in 14 games and made three starts, recording 34 total tackles, one tackle for loss, and four passes defended. Advertisement Before transferring to Louisville for his final collegiate season, Duck spent four years at North Carolina. He finished his college career with 135 tackles, 24 passes defended, five interceptions, and five tackles for loss. Smith was the Dolphins' second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of South Carolina. He will be entering his third season in the NFL with 21 games of experience. In college, Smith had an impressive final two years, combining for 91 tackles, 18 passes defended, and four interceptions. The Dolphins are looking for a big step forward from Smith in 2025 to hold down one of the two cornerback spots. Advertisement Miami is also giving looks to Jason Marshall, Ethan Bonner, and Isaiah Johnson. Marshal was the Dolphins' fifth-round draft pick, and Bonner and Johnson are former undrafted free agents. Marshall was a four-year starter at Florida, collecting 98 tackles, eight TFLs, 25 passes defended, and two interceptions. Bonner has impressed coaches and reporters at OTAs, earning the orange jersey one day for being the best player from the previous day. Dolphins third-year cornerback and likely nickel back starter called Bonner and Duck "ballers" after they earned back-to-back orange jerseys last week. There's still plenty of offseason to go, but it seems like Duck and Smith are the leaders to win the two open cornerback spots. But don't count out Bonner or the other rookies from earning some playing time. Report: Wisconsin football 2025 opponent loses top offensive weapon to significant injury
Report: Wisconsin football 2025 opponent loses top offensive weapon to significant injury Wisconsin football may face a less-than-full-strength Oregon Ducks team when the two meet in Eugene, Oregon, on Oct. 25, 2025. That is the current sentiment after On3's Pete Nakos reported on Friday that Ducks standout wide receiver Evan Stewart suffered a torn patellar tendon during practice and will miss anywhere between three and 12 months. Many others have since confirmed the news, with varying levels of specifics. ESPN's Pete Thamel said that Stewart "suffered a knee injury that's expected to impact his availability for the 2025 season," while 247Sports' Matt Zenitz only reported that the injury is "feared to be significant." While the Badgers and Ducks do not meet until Week 9 of the 2025 season (4 1/2 months from the time of the report), Stewart's status for that matchup appears already in doubt. The 5-foot-11 wideout played a significant role on the Ducks in 2024, catching 48 passes for 613 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Those totals were each second-most among Oregon wide receivers, trailing only second-team All-Big Ten WR Tez Johnson. With Johnson off to the NFL, Stewart was a popular breakout pick entering 2025. The status of this injury will obviously dictate whether that comes to fruition. The rising senior originally began his career at Texas A&M, which he joined as a five-star recruit and the No. 11 overall player in the class of 2022. He appeared in 18 games over two seasons with the Aggies, catching a combined 91 passes for 1,163 receiving yards and six scores. The 2025 Oregon Ducks will look far different from the team that narrowly edged Wisconsin in Week 12 of last season. The team returns just 43% (No. 104 nationally) of its production, with most of its top contributors gone to the NFL. However, it still ranks among the top teams in the Big Ten and the entire sport, per both ESPN SP+ and its Football Power Index. Wisconsin is in a similar situation, though for a different reason. Luke Fickell overhauled the program's offense this offseason, hiring coordinator Jeff Grimes and adding Maryland transfer quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. Unfortunately, like Oregon, Wisconsin saw its season outlook change due to an offseason injury, as starting left tackle Kevin Heywood suffered a season-ending ACL injury during spring practice. With or without Stewart on the field, the Badgers are likely to be a significant underdog when they visit the Ducks.
