Reports: Jay Wright not interested in coaching Knicks

Reuters18 hours ago

June 8 - Although the Knicks have three players whom Jay Wright coached at Villanova, the retired Hall of Famer will not resume his career with New York, multiple media outlets reported on Saturday.
Per the reports, Wright and Knicks president Leon Rose -- who are close -- had a discussion about the coaching vacancy but a formal interview was not scheduled.
Following their first trip to the Eastern Conference finals in 25 years, the Knicks fired Tom Thibodeau on Tuesday after just one season at the helm.
At Villanova, Wright coached current Knicks Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges, who were all members of the program's 2016 national championship team.
After 21 seasons at Villanova, Wright retired in 2022 and became a college basketball analyst for CBS and TNT. He compiled a 520-197 record at the school.
Commenting on social media regarding the reports that Wright would not be coaching the Knicks, Hart jokingly posted, "Man Thank You. Stay retired!"
Per ESPN, Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd is among the candidates who have been on the Knicks' radar since Thibodeau's dismissal.

Players union condemns MLS's $1m Club World Cup prize money offer

Major League Soccer has submitted a new proposal to its players concerning how bonuses for the Club World Cup will be paid out to the players on clubs participating in the tournament, according to a source familiar with negotiations between the parties who spoke to the Guardian and other outlets on the condition of anonymity to protect their relationships within the game. The MLS Players' Association, the union representing MLS players, later confirmed they had received a proposal. According to the source, the league's offer would see players earn 20% of a team's performance-based prize money at each stage of the tournament with no agreed-upon cap on maximum payout. This means each group of MLS players competing in the tournament would collectively receive $200,000 for a group stage win (from a total prize of $1m), $400,000 for a group stage win (from a total prize of $2m per team, per win), $1.5m for making the Round of 16 (from a total prize of $7.5m) and so on. The players' current bonus structure, outlined in the MLSPA's collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with the league, allows MLS players to receive half of any prize or participation money awarded to a team participating in an outside tournament, but with a hard cap of $1m. With the Club World Cup's $9.5m participation prize given to MLS teams, players had already maxed out their maximum payout and would have not been entitled to any more money for progress in the tournament. Under the proposed terms, in the unlikely event an MLS team wins the Club World Cup, players on that team would be entitled to split a prize pool that would total up to $23.9m. In their own statement, the MLSPA confirmed that the proposal had been delivered but said that the 20% payout is 'below the international standard,' and also said that the league has attempted to 'strong-arm' the players into CBA waivers that do not regard the Club World Cup. The prize money structure was the subject of protest by the Seattle Sounders last weekend, with the squad wearing T-shirts in the warmup reading 'Club World Cup Cash Grab.' The MLSPA later said in a statement that the league had 'failed to bring forward a reasonable proposal.' The source said that MLS had originally planned to propose the 20% arrangement on the following Monday, but then elected to delay delivering the proposal until Friday. Caitlin Clark fuels Angel Reese rivalry despite injury as cameras catch heated courtside reaction in Fever-Sky

Another chapter was written in the Caitlin Clark rivalry with Angel Reese despite the Indiana Fever star not playing in Saturday's clash between their teams due to her heated courtside reaction. Clark was caught on camera vociferously doing the travel gesture after Reese committed the violation feet from where she was sitting on the Indiana bench. The WNBA sophomore got out of her seat, as she is still rehabbing a quad injury, to make the gesture, then in the direction the Fever were trying to score. The game was on CBS and expected to be another showpiece contest for the WNBA, with Clark and Reese facing off again. Yet, Clark is expected to return soon from her injury and did not play for a second of the Fever's 79-52 road victory over the Chicago Sky. Reese's sophomore slump continues with four points in 27 minutes on the court and a plus-minus of -20. Caitlin after Angel traveled... — Oh No He Didn't (@ohnohedidnt24) June 8, 2025 From the first game this season between the teams last month, Reese had to be restrained after Clark knocked her down and caused her to spill the ball moments after she grabbed an offensive rebound near the end of the third quarter. As tempers hit boiling point, Clark turned her back and walked away as players from both teams got between the two to stop things spilling over. Reese then walked to the side of the court where a Sky official stepped in front of her to try and get her to cool her temper. That led to a racism investigation from the league into Indiana's fans, which found no wrongdoing. All parties involved tried to distance themselves from the situation after the investigation was completed. 'There's no place for that in our game, there's no place for that in society,' Clark aid after the investigation was announced last month. 'We want every person that comes into our arena, whether player, whether fan, to have a great experience.' Reese had her time to speak as well, saying that 'there's no place in this league for that.' 'I think the WNBA and our team and our organization have done a great job supporting me,' she told reporters. 'I've had communication from everyone, from so many people across this league. It could happen to me, it can happen to anyone. And I think they've done a good job supporting us in this.'

Mariners CF Julio Rodriguez in lineup vs. Angels

June 8 - True to his word, Seattle Mariners center fielder Julio Rodriguez is in the starting lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, Calif. Rodriguez was listed to bat second in the team's lineup on Sunday, one day after he needed to be helped off the field in an 8-6 setback to the Angels. The two-time All-Star was hit by batter Randy Arozarena's 98.1 mph one-hopper off the bone above his right ankle while attempting to steal third base. X-rays were negative. "There's a high chance that I should be in the lineup (on Sunday)," Rodriguez told reporters after the game. "So just seeing how it reacts through the night and like how I wake up tomorrow. But I feel very positive that tomorrow will be a better day." Rodriguez, 24, is batting .254 with 10 home runs and 33 RBIs in 62 games this season. --Field Level Media
