Injuring eight Kuching dorm-mates with hot iron sees 14-year-old sent to reform school
KUCHING, June 11 — A 14-year-old boy who injured eight of his dorm-mates with a hot iron last month was today sentenced to a total of nine years in Henry Gurney School.
The Form 2 student pleaded guilty to three charges each before Magistrates Ling Hui Chuan and Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali, and another two charges before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan.
Each of the three magistrates sentenced him to three years at the reform school under Section 91(1)(f) of the Child Act 2001, after reviewing the Welfare Department's probation report.
In addition to the said provision, the courts also ordered for the boy's parents or guardians to visit him regularly in accordance with Section 93(1)(d) of the same Act.
Under Section 70 of the Child Act 2001, the courts also ordered that the boy be placed under the supervision of a probation officer for one year after completing his sentence.
According to the charges, the boy intentionally injured eight male victims, aged 13 to 15, between 12.30am and 2am at a secondary school hostel here on May 2.
All eight charges were framed under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years' imprisonment, or a fine, or caning, or any two such punishments upon conviction.
Based on the facts of the case, a teacher informed the school's head warden at 9.22am on the same day that a student had reported burns on his left arm, which at the time were believed to have been caused by hot water, and asked to go home for treatment.
Later, around 11.45am and 2.15pm, several more students came forward reporting injuries consistent with burns on various parts of their bodies, including their arms, calves, ankles, and necks.
This raised suspicions, as the injuries seemed to result from deliberate contact with a hot object.
A preliminary investigation by the school later pointed to the boy as the perpetrator.
When questioned by school authorities, the boy admitted to have deliberately used a hot iron on eight of his dorm-mates.
Police reports were subsequently lodged by the teacher, parents, and victims, leading to the boy's arrest on the same day.
The police investigation found that the boy had used the hot iron on the victims while they slept.
The injuries were recorded and verified by a specialist from Sarawak General Hospital and several eyewitnesses, including the victims, saw the boy committing the acts.
The incident is believed to have stemmed from the boy's desire to bully his schoolmates without understanding the consequences of his actions.
ASP Arman Ibrahim and Insp Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin appeared separately for the prosecution.
The boy was represented by National Legal Aid Foundation lawyers Russell Lim and Brendan Ting. — The Borneo Post

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The driver of the chartered bus that crashed in Gerik on Monday killing 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students, has been arrested. Perak police chief Noor Hisam Nordin said the 39-year-old man was detained at about 6pm after being discharged from Taiping Hospital, where he was treated for injuries sustained in the crash. The suspect will be brought to the Gerik district police headquarters (IPD) to assist in the investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which pertains to causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. 'We have received instructions from the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC). (He) will be charged in the Gerik (magistrates') court tomorrow,' Nor Hisam said in a Bernama report. The bus was chartered by UPSI students who had celebrated Hari Raya Aidiladha in Jerteh, Terengganu, over the weekend, and were travelling back to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak. It overturned at Km53 of the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik, killing 15 students. The crash also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver, his assistant and four people in an MPV involved in the collision. On Tuesday, Sinar Harian reported that Bukit Aman traffic investigation and enforcement department director Yusri Hassan Basri had revealed that the bus driver had 18 outstanding summonses. He said 13 summonses were for speeding, three for not wearing a seatbelt, one for not having a third brake light, and another for involvement in a previous accident. Transport minister Loke Siew Fook reportedly said that based on dashcam footage from another road user, it was clear that the bus was 'speeding and overtaking' before it lost control and overturned.

Nearly 160,000 harmful online content removed this year, says Fahmi
Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said 57% of the removed content was from Facebook, 28% TikTok, and 13% YouTube. PETALING JAYA : Social media platforms Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube have removed 159,518 pieces of harmful content related to online gambling, scams, cyberbullying, and fake news as of yesterday, says communications minister Fahmi Fadzil. These removals were part of 174,473 takedown requests made so far this year, Bernama reported him as saying. 'About 51% of the content involved online gambling, 25% were related to scams, 12% cyberbullying, and 9% fake news,' Fahmi said at the ministry's monthly assembly. He said 57% of the removed content was from Facebook, 28% TikTok, and 13% YouTube. These three platforms account for nearly 95% of the problematic content identified. Fahmi also raised concerns about the continued presence of child exploitation content online, especially on Facebook. 'This raises questions about whether current laws and cooperation are enough, or if we need a more strategic approach,' he said, citing last year's joint operation, known as Op Pedo, between the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). On efforts to regulate social media, Fahmi noted that a new licensing framework introduced earlier this year aimed to make digital platforms safer, especially for children. He also highlighted the Online Safety Act (OnSA) 2024, passed in Parliament last December and set to be enforced soon. The Act gives MCMC the authority to act against platforms that fail to meet safety requirements. The OnSA has received royal assent from Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim and is currently being prepared for enforcement.
