Rain forecast cancels 5-day closure on SR 18 in Snoqualmie
A planned five-day closure of State Route 18 at Interstate 90 has been canceled due to expected rain, the Washington State Department of Transportation announced Thursday.
The closure was originally scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. Thursday, May 15, and continue through 5 a.m. Wednesday, May 21. It would have closed SR 18 in both directions under I-90—one of the most heavily traveled and congested interchanges in Washington state.
WSDOT now says the closure will be rescheduled for a date after Memorial Day.
New dates have not yet been set, but the department said it would provide an update once a new schedule is confirmed.
The closure was part of ongoing construction to build a new diverging diamond interchange at I-90 and SR 18, a design aimed at improving traffic flow and safety in the area. Once completed, this will be only the second diverging diamond interchange in the region.
While the canceled closure delays a major milestone, WSDOT says the overall project remains on track.
According to spokesperson David Rasbach, traffic could shift onto the new Deep Creek and Raging River bridges in early June.
'Definitely expect extra time, plus you've got to factor in the little extra distance you have to travel for the detours looping out to the next interchanges,' Rasbach said in an earlier briefing on the closure plans.
Although this closure is postponed, Rasbach said drivers should expect additional impacts later this year. Crews still need extended time to complete the north end of the interchange, which could result in another long-term closure or a series of shorter ones. 'That is still to be determined,' he said.
Construction on the full interchange is expected to finish this summer, with the widening of SR 18 just south of I-90 wrapping up in the fall.
Once complete, WSDOT will begin widening and paving SR 18 down the west slope of Tiger Mountain toward Issaquah-Hobart Road.

More work on this $2.8B Pierce County freeway project to start soon
Work to rebuild an infamously tangled Puyallup intersection on State Route 167 will pick up steam this summer, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation. After decades of planning and more than $2.8 billion, once complete the Puget Sound Gateway Project in Pierce and King counties will add new connections to Interstate 5, the ports of Tacoma and the Sea-Tac Airport. There will be a new expressway between State Route 410 and North Meridian Avenue in Puyallup, a new interchange at North Meridian Avenue, two bridges and updated street surfaces and ramps, according to WSDOT. The project also will build a new paved trail between Tacoma and Puyallup that passes through the Puyallup Tribe of Indians reservation and features artwork by Coast Salish artists. The work will be completed in stages. 'The first stage of work completed the new Wapato Way East bridge and SR 99 roundabout in Fife. The second stage builds the expressway between I-5 and the Port of Tacoma. It's scheduled to open in 2026. Work on the third stage between SR 161/North Meridian Avenue and SR 410 began in 2025. Construction of the last stage between North Meridian Avenue and I-5 will begin in 2026. The entire project is planned for completion by 2030,' according to WSDOT. The improvements will improve freight mobility in and around the Port of Tacoma, WSDOT project engineer Tom Slimak told The News Tribune on Wednesday. Slimak said that would improve economic vitality in the region and make driving more efficient for passenger vehicles as well, which will see a new expressway. WSDOT will keep sending updates about road closures but anticipates some nighttime closures on SR 167 in the coming months, Slimak said. 'These projects have been a long time coming and the public's been waiting for it. It's pretty exciting that we're there. Lots of planning and effort to get to this point,' he said. 'It's rewarding at this point to be able to be building this and being almost done in 2029 … . after decades of preparatory work.' The entire Puget Sound Gateway Program project will cost $2.83 billion, which includes $2.44 billion of state funding, $213 million in toll funding, $144 million in local funding and $73.7 million of federal funding from the Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight & Highway Projects program, according to WSDOT. When camping in Michigan's summer heat, sometimes you need to cool off. While campgrounds in the state have plenty of lakes to plunge into, a water park or splash pad can be a fun amenity to have while camping — especially with kids. Several campgrounds in Michigan have water parks or water obstacle courses. Here's a list of some campgrounds in Michigan where you can find them. Staying at Duck Creek RV Resort in Muskegon includes admission to its Aquasis Waterpark. The water park features slides, indoor and outdoor pools, an adventure river, splash play area for younger children and an outdoor adults-only hot tub. The splash play area has three small slides and a tipping water bucket. The indoor pool has a retractable roof that is opened when the weather is nice. The resort offers campsites and cabins. Duck Creek is located across the street from Michigan's Adventure amusement park at 1155 W. Riley Thompson Road in Rothbury. Double JJ Resort in Rothbury features a 60,000-square-foot Gold Rush Indoor Waterpark and an outdoor water park called the Back Forty Swimming Hole. The indoor water park features a lazy river, wave pool, water fort, toddler pool, water basketball, hot tubs and waterslides, including Michigan's tallest indoor waterslide, according the the resort's website. The outdoor waterpark has a waterslide, two pools, splash pad and hot tub. The resorts offers several lodging options, including camp sites, cabins, log homes condominiums and hotel rooms. The resort is located at 5900 S. Water Road in Rothbury. You'll find a splash park, splash zone, pool, play pool with mini slides and two water obstacle courses at Jellystone Park at North Port Huron in Carsonville. The splash park has interactive water features, water slides and a dump bucket. The Wibit obstacle courses include one for adults and teens and another for small kids. All the water attractions open Memorial Day weekend. Jellystone Park has both RV and tent sites. The campground is located at 2353 N. Lakeshore Road in Carsonville. New in 2025, Alpen Bluffs Outdoor Resort in Gaylord has an aquatic playground called Inukshuk Shores that is set to open Memorial Day weekend. It will also have an outdoor pool with hot tub that is scheduled to open in the third quarter of 2025. The aquatic playground is an inflatable obstacle course by Wibit that features slides and jumping platforms. Alpen Bluffs offers RV, motorhome, glamping yurt and log cabin accommodations. It is located at 254 Little League Drive in Gaylord. Located in White Cloud, Adventure Bound Camping Resorts' West Michigan location has a water park called Pirate's Cove. The water park has slides and two pools. Visitors can stay in RV or tent sites. The resort also offers RV and motel rentals. The resort is located at 4495 S. Spruce Ave. in White Cloud. Walnut Hills Family Campground in Durand also has a Wibit water park that is free to campers. The inflatable course includes obstacles, slides and platforms. It's open to campers and non-campers Thursday to Sunday and holiday weekend Mondays. The campground has both RV and tent campsites and cabins. The campground is located at 7685 Lehring Road in Durand. While not directly connected to each other, worth mentioning is Soaring Eagle Hideaway RV Park that is a 1.5 mile drive to Soaring Eagle Waterpark in Mt. Pleasant. The water park has water slides, a lazy river and surf simulator. The RV park has campsites with concrete pads, but does not allow tent camping. The RV park is located at 5514 E. Airport Road and the water park is located at 5665 E. Pickard Road. Both are in Mt. Pleasant.
