Ottawa man charged after heroin found in package at airport

A 47-year-old Ottawa man is scheduled to appear in court in late June after being charged in connection with the discovery of heroin in a package delivered from Italy to the Ottawa International Airport.

A news release from the Ontario Provincial Police on Friday said the charges were laid following a joint investigation with the Canadian Border Services Agency, which determined the contents of the package were heroin following a secondary inspection at the airport on May 8.

The joint investigation then led to a police search of a residence on Red Castle Ride in the Manotick area on May 20, the OPOP said, adding that one person was arrested there.

Harvinder Singh Malhi has been charged with importing and possession of a Schedule 1 substance under the Controlled Drug and Substance Act, police said. He has been released from custody and scheduled to appear in court in Ottawa on June 24.

(OPP/X) A driver is facing a $110 fine after an Ontario Provincial Police cruiser was struck from behind on Highway 417 in Ottawa. Ontario Provincial Police say an OPP cruiser was rear-ended on Highway 417 near Parkdale Avenue shortly before 12:30 p.m. Friday. 'The cruiser was stopped in heavy traffic when it was struck,' the OPP said on X. 'Thankfully, neither the officer nor the driver of the other vehicle suffered any injuries.' A photo posted on social media showed damage to the rear of the cruiser The driver of the other vehicle was charged with following too closely, which includes a $110 fine and two demerit points upon conviction. 'With all the construction in that area, drivers need to take extra care when travelling through there. Keep a safe distance, don't make sudden lane changes, and stay off your phones!' the OPP said.

(OPP/X) Ontario Provincial Police say a Kitchener man is facing serious fines after being stopped allegedly driving more than double the speed limit on Highway 416 in Ottawa. In a post on social media, the OPP said the 30-year-old driver was going 208 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the 416. Police stopped the driver at around 11:30 a.m. Friday just south of Highway 417, OPP told CTV News Ottawa. The man has been charged with stunt driving. His vehicle has been impounded for 14 days, and his driver's licence was automatically suspended for 30 days. OPP say he could face a fine of up to $10,000 and significantly longer licence suspensions upon conviction.
