UPDATE: Rancho Fire in Cottonwood grows to over 150 acres. Evacuation orders in place
A vegetation fire in Cottonwood on Thursday afternoon has burned more than 150 acres and prompted evacuation orders as structures are threatened.
The Rancho Fire was reported around 1:30 p.m. in the area of Rancho Estates Road north of Gas Point Road in Cottonwood. It had quickly grown to nearly 50 acres around 2 p.m. as it was burning in grass and oak woodlands, according to Cal Fire.
But by 3 p.m., Cal Fire had estimated the blaze had burned 157 acres with zero containment. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
There are evacuation orders in place for zones COT-9660 and AND-9750.
Residents living just to the north and southeast of where the fire is burning are under evacuation warnings. The zones are AND-1800, AND-9590, COT-9710, COT-9720, COT-9730, and COT-9740, according to the Shasta County Sheriff's Office.
Rancho Estates Road at Gas Point is closed to northbound traffic; Rhonda Road at Lynhart and Rhonda Road at Gas Point were closed, but Rhonda Road was reopened to traffic just after 3:30 p.m., according to dispatch reports.
Firefighters have relayed to dispatchers that winds in the area are causing spot fires to break out.
Wind was gusting up to 20 mph on Thursday afternoon with the temperature hovering in the mid-90s, the National Weather Service.
The forecast for Friday and the weekend calls for cooler temperatures, but wind will continue to gust between 20 and 30 mph in Shasta County.
The National Weather Service issued a fire weather watch for the North State on Saturday.
The high Friday will be 79 degrees. Saturday's high is expected to be 81 degrees.
A red flag warning alerts people that there is an increased risk of fire danger brought on by warm temperatures, low humidities and stronger winds, according to a NWS office in Michigan. A new fire can grow rapidly under a red flag warning, according to the International Association of Fire Chiefs.
People can help prevent fires from starting by removing dead shrubbery around their homes and avoiding using power equipment that creates sparks, NPR reported. Other tips from the IAFC include not driving your vehicle on dry grass as the heat from the underside of your vehicle can start a fire and never throwing cigarettes or matches out of a car.

The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup Is About To Get A Lot Hotter

While some teams – particularly those from milder European climbs – have already complained about oppressive heat at games across the United States through the first week of the tournament, forecasts are calling for conditions to worsen significantly over the next several days. So far, the heat has been mostly seasonal in June in the U.S., particularly on the Eastern Seaboard where the majority of tournament matches are being played. That has prompted some kidding from local observers of the tournament, who are accustomed to regularly playing through such conditions in domestic play as well as the currently ongoing Concacaf Gold Cup. But the next few days could be truly dangerous in places where group stage matches are scheduled. And possibly compounding matters are FIFA's decision the schedule the majority of those matches before sundown locally, to be shown in more favorable TV windows in Europe and elsewhere around the world. There are currently five group stage games scheduled where the forecast high is 94 degrees Fahrenheit or higher and the match is scheduled entirely. (All data is from as of Saturday evening.) Sunday Tuesday Wednesday Borussia Dortmund vs. Ulsan HD (Cincinnati) There are no current plans to reschedule kickoff times, though as recent weather delays have shown, that sort of thing is always subject to change. But part of the issue is that final group games from Monday to Thursday are scheduled tkick off simultaneously to avoid giving any team a competitive advantage on the final day of group play. So if one match is rescheduled for later in the day, presumably the corresponding other match in the group would also need to be. Of course, temperature is only part of the story. The heat index and WetBulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) use additional factors such as relative humidity and sun intensity to measure how adverse conditions are. But were these MLS fixtures, it appears likely they would be rescheduled to night kickoffs. According to information from the league's website published in 2016, matches will go into a delay if and when the WBGT rise above 92.3. Given that all of these kickoffs occur before sundown – and given that in the Eastern United States, heat and humidity go together – it's very likely conditions will exceed that threshold at least at some of these scheduled fixtures. Looking forward, there may be even more potential for heat to have extreme impact on the knockout phase. Of the 15 scheduled single-elimination matches, 11 are scheduled to kick off at 4 pm ET or earlier in outdoor conditions. Temperatures aren't expected to be quite as hot into early July as they are the first few days of the coming week, but summer forecasts in particular are turbulent, and another wave of extreme heat before the competition ends wouldn't be all that surprising.

Los Angeles County firefighters prepositioned due to "critical fire weather"
With red flag warnings in place for critical fire weather in Los Angeles County on Saturday, state and city leaders have taken a proactive approach to the potential need for firefighters. National Weather Service officials issued the red flag warning on Saturday, which they expected to last from 1 p.m. until at least 5 a.m. on Sunday morning. Areas affected by the warnings include the I-5 corridor and the Antelope Valley, where NWS officials say "strong to damaging" winds, some of which could reach up to 65 mph, were expected. This, paired with low humidity in the area, could create dangerous fire conditions. In response, California Governor Gavin Newsom approved the prepositioning of some firefighting resources. "The Governor's Office of Emergency Services has approved the prepositioning of firefighting resources in Los Angeles County in response to Red Flag Warnings and critical fire weather conditions forecasted to impact Southern California through Sunday, June 22, 2025," said a release from Newsom's office. "This proactive approach has proven to be a critical component of California's wildfire response strategy, reducing response times and containing fires before they escalate into major incidents. These efforts ensure that both ground and air resources are ready to respond quickly, minimizing the potential impact of new fires." In January, a series of red flag warnings were issued due to similar weather conditions. The extremely high-powered winds and low levels of humidity created conditions that saw several devastating wild fires, including the Palisades and Eaton fires, break out and destroy thousands of homes and buildings.
