Zelenskyy said the US redirected 20,000 anti-drone missiles intended for Ukraine to the Middle East
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the US has redirected specialized anti-drone weapons intended for Ukraine to the Middle East.
Speaking to ABC News in an interview broadcast Sunday, Zelenskyy said that the Biden administration had agreed to send Ukraine the weapons, to help take out Russia's Shahed drones that have been used to target Ukraine's cities and infrastructure.
"This morning, my defense minister informed me that the United States has sent those missiles to the Middle East," he said.
Zelenskyy added: "We were counting on that project — 20,000 missiles specifically designed to intercept Shaheds. It is not expensive, but it is special technology."
The Wall Street Journal reported that US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued the order to redirect anti-drone weapons about two weeks ago, and that the equipment being redirected are fuses that can be fitted to rockets to make them more effective at targeting drones.
In the Middle East, the US has been helping ally Israel defend itself from drone attacks by militant groups aligned with Iran in the wake of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks, including the Houthi in Yemen.
The Houthis have also targeted international shipping lanes in the Red Sea and the US Navy vessels defending them, often using drones.
Russia and Ukraine trade blows
In recent months, Russia has escalated its attacks on Ukraine, including launching its largest aerial attack since 2022.
Overnight on Sunday, it launched 499 missiles and drones, including 277 Shaheds, according to Ukrainian authorities.
The attacks are not all one-way. Last week, Ukraine launched an audacious drone attack on Russia's bomber fleet.
Ukraine's SBU, its internal security agency, said it used small drones to hit 41 Russian aircraft. Those aircraft include A-50 airborne early warning and control planes, An-12 transporters, Il-78 refueling tankers, and Tu-95, Tu-22M3, and Tu-160 bombers.
The ongoing attacks come amid faltering attempts by US President Donald Trump to broker a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia. Trump has cast doubt on future US military support for Ukraine unless it agrees to a quick resolution to the conflict.
Ukraine has leaned heavily on US support, and Zelenskyy said in the interview with ABC News that his country needs more air defense systems, including missiles for its US-made Patriot air defense systems.
"Without US support, there will be more casualties. Many more," he said.

ABC News did not immediately return a request for comment. Moran's suspension for airing his thoughts comes as public trust in the media continues to steadily erode. A Gallup survey last year showed a record-low 31 percent of Americans expressed at least a "fair amount" of trust in the media to accurately report the news. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to Moran's post on X, Sunday, calling it "unhinged and unacceptable."

Greensboro's ‘Run for Their Lives' march supports release of Israeli hostages
GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — People advocating for the release of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas gathered this afternoon in Greensboro near the Friendly Center as part of a worldwide effort called Run for Their Lives. For many, it was important to march a week after the Run for Their Lives march in Boulder, Colorado, was firebombed with Molotov cocktails. Among the dozens who gathered in Greensboro, the mission was clear: bring the 55 hostages home, of whom half remain alive. 'We felt that it was really important that we show solidarity with the hostages who have been languishing, held in captivity by Hamas terrorists,' said Rabbi Andy Koren of Temple Emanuel Greensboro. Koren says the Greensboro march on Friendly Avenue is like a patch in a quilt, every march worldwide making the call for release stronger, larger, more supportive. 'The message is intended for their families in Israel, our extended families in Israel,' he added. Rabbi Koren bore a number on his chest: 611. Sunday marked 611 days since Hamas attacked Israel. Every step was filled with a range of emotions, from unity to determination. 'This is not a time to shy away or disappear, this is a time to be proud, to be seen, and to stand up for the innocent hostages taken from their homes,' said Glenda Bernhardt, CEO of the Greensboro Jewish Federation. The silent walk was 18 minutes long because in Jewish culture, 18 is meaningful. 'It is our number of life,' said Koren. Many marchers took the opportunity to reflect on the perils of the war, including Steven Greenstein, a dual Israeli American citizen. 'It's time for the war to end, it's time for hostages to come home,' said Greenstein. Greenstein, among other marchers, vows to keep advocating for the hostages until the day all are home. 'We've been walking now for over two years in extreme heat, in rain, in thunderstorms, in wind, and none of these elements even compare to what the hostages eare nduring at the moment,' said Greenstein. The group gathered to contribute their part of the patchwork quilt, a video message to post online. 'Bring them home, and stand with Boulder, Colorado,' they said in part on camera. A sea of signs, faces of those held captive, and both Israeli, and American flags waving…a testament to a shared goal, for the war to end. 'We're just grateful for those who stand together with us also, we are not asking for people to be hateful, we are asking for people to be supportive, and they really were,' said Koren.
