Music director Alexander Shelley to hold final National Arts Centre Orchestra concert July 2026
The National Arts Centre Orchestra's celebrated music director will hold his last concert with the capital ensemble in July before heading to California.
Alexander Shelley's farewell show comes towards the end of NAC's 2025-2026 season, with his contract set to end Aug. 31, 2026.
Shelley is also music director designate for the 2025-2026 season of the Pacific Symphony in Costa Mesa, Calif., and is set to fully take the reins of the Orange County orchestra in the 2026-27 season.
Shelley joined the Ottawa orchestra in September 2015 at age 35, becoming the youngest music director in NAC Orchestra's history.
He's credited with strengthening its reputation through major tours of Canada, Europe and to New York's Carnegie Hall, as well as livestreams and critically acclaimed recordings.
Over the next two months, Shelley will lead tours to Korea and Japan, marking the orchestra's debut in Korea and its return to Japan for the first time in four decades.
In a statement Wednesday, NAC president and CEO Christopher Deacon said Shelley has left an indelible mark on the orchestra and artists he has inspired.

Shelley said his time in Canada 'has enriched me more than I can express,' and is proud to say his two sons were born in Ottawa.
'They are Canadians. My wife Zoe and I could not be prouder of this fact or more grateful to this country for the lifelong friendships we have forged, for the memories it has gifted us, for the unshakable generosity of spirit shown to us, and for over a decade of unforgettable cultural and musical adventures,' Shelley said.
Born in London to concert pianists, Shelley studied cello and conducting in Germany and shot to fame when he was unanimously awarded first prize at the 2005 Leeds Conductors' Competition. He went on to become the youngest-ever chief conductor of Germany's Nürnberger Symphoniker, from 2009 to 2017.
Since 2015, Shelley also served as associate conductor of London's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and in 2023 was appointed artistic and music director of Artis−Naples in Florida for the Naples Philharmonic.

MADISON, Ill. (AP) — Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Josef Newgarden flipped his car upside down during Sunday night's race at Gateway outside St. Louis. Newgarden crashed midway through the race after contact with Louis Foster. Newgarden skidded on his roof for a considerable distance after the collision with Foster. The IndyCar safety crew immediately helped Newgarden from his car and he radioed his Team Penske crew he was fine. IndyCar's safety team had to turn the No. 2 Chevrolet back on its wheels after Newgarden was out of the car and the race was under yellow for the clean up. Earlier in the race, Newgarden teammate Will Power crashed when a cut tire caused him to hit the wall. Power had started on the pole. US Open's final pairing of Scott and Burns turns into a rain-soaked afterthought
OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) — By the time the rain-soaked U.S. Open had figured out its new champion and the chants of 'J-J! J-J!' and 'USA! USA!' had finally given way, there was still golf to be played — one nearly forgotten twosome left to make its way up the 18th fairway. Talk about a slog. Sam Burns and Adam Scott wrapped up the waterlogged action at Oakmont on Sunday as pure also-rans, victimized by bad breaks, bad shots and an inability to handle the rain the way J.J. Spaun did in the group ahead of them to win the title. 'It was just so sloppy the rest of the way,' Scott said of the conditions on the course after returning from a 1 hour, 37 minute delay that started with the then-frontrunners on the eighth tee box. 'We must have looked horrible, both of us playing like that. But that's what can happen in these things. If you get a little off, you're just severely punished.' They came into the day with Burns in first and Scott tied for second, one shot back. Burns shot 8-over 78 to tie for seventh at 4 over. Scott had a 79 to tie for 12th, two shots behind Burns. 'I didn't adapt to those conditions well enough,' said Scott, the 2013 Masters champion. Scott, who made three birdies over the final six holes on Saturday to get in the final group, played those same holes in 5 over in the final round. Burns, who followed a 65 on Friday — the best single round of the tournament — with a 69 on Saturday to take the lead, made two rain-induced double bogeys on the back nine Sunday to punctuate his freefall. 'Look, it's part of it,' he said. 'Everybody's got to deal with it. I'm extremely proud of the way I fought out there today.' Burns' final gasp came when he made double bogey on the 15th hole after being denied relief from a waterlogged lie on the fairway. With water spraying up from the turf on his practice swing, he called one rules official, then another, asking for a drop from the waterlogged lie. No luck. So, he swung away and the ball duck-hooked to the left. He barely advanced the next shot from the saturated rough. By the end of it, he was 3 over, two shots out of the lead, and the tournament was becoming a contest between Spaun and eventual runner-up Robert MacIntyre. 'I was 100% locked in on what I was trying to do,' Burns said about the fateful approach on 15. 'Ultimately, it felt like the water just kind of got in the way, and I went left. It is what it is.' Before that, on the 12th fairway, Burns took a yoga mat-sized pelt on his 122-yard approach shot. The ball sailed far to the left. He saved par there. 'I was in a divot on 11, as well,' Burns said of his first double bogey. 'It's part of it. It happens. You play enough golf, you hit it in divots, and everybody does.' Besides Spaun and MacIntyre, nobody looked quite prepared to deal with what confronted them after they returned from a delay that made some of the greens and fairways unplayable. US hopes 5-0 win over Trinidad starts upswing after longest losing streak since 2007
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — The U.S. hopes a blowout win over the world's 100th-ranked team can start to lessen the pessimism created by the Americans' longest losing streak since 2007. Malik Tillman scored twice and Diego Luna had a pair of assists in a 5-0 rout of Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday in the Americans' CONCACAF Gold Cup opener. 'Really important I think to cut a little bit this — I don't say negativity, but, yes … but it's really important now to start the competition with a good feeling,' U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino said. Victory in the Group D opener ended a four-game losing streak and came after days of controversy over Christian Pulisic's desire to rest during the Gold Cup and Pochettino not including the star in a pair of pre-tournament friendlies the attacker offered to play in.
