An Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) patch is seen in Ottawa, on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2024. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Spencer Colby ORILLIA — Ontario Provincial Police say they've charged 36 men with 128 criminal offences after a child sexual exploitation investigation involving more than 20 police services across the province. The investigation, which took place between March 31 and April 11, included 21 police forces and saw investigators pose as children online. They arrested 36 men ranging in age from 18 to 73, one of whom was listed on the national sex offender registry. Police also say they identified nine real child victims in the investigation who are now safe. Police say there are 51 investigations stemming from the child luring probe that remain active. They are urging anyone with information to come forward and are encouraging parents to talk to their children about how to stay safe during online interactions. Sudburian among dozens arrested in child exploitation investigation

A total of 36 people from across Ontario have been charged with 128 offences following a major undercover investigation by provincial and 26 local police forces. Among those arrested was a 37-year-old man from Greater Sudbury who was charged with luring a person under age 16 and two counts of failing to comply with a prohibition order. He was still in custody Thursday in Sudbury and was expected to make his first court appearance. Went uncover 'Twenty-one police services from the Provincial Strategy to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse and Exploitation on the Internet took part in the luring investigation from March 31 to April 11,' police said in a news release. 'Investigators utilized undercover techniques to access online chatrooms and social media applications in order to identify, locate and arrest persons looking to sexually exploit children.' All of those charged are men between the ages of 18 and 73, including one who was already on the national sex offender registry. Although undercover officers posed as children online, nine actual victims were identified during the investigation. 'They have been provided support and are safe,' police said. Police said one suspect showed up to an arranged meeting with snacks, while another had sexual aids. Another 51 investigations are ongoing, police added. 'These results highlight a sobering reality: predators can easily reach children in online spaces,' OPP Det. Staff Sgt. Tim Brown said in the news release. 'We urge parents and guardians to remain vigilant and to talk to your children about staying safe online. Just as you wouldn't leave your child alone in a city, don't let them navigate the online world alone.' There has been a significant rise in reports of online child exploitation, police added.

Victims of 2 separate violent incidents in Vaughan were attempting to sell items through online marketplace: police

York Regional Police say the victims of two separate violent incidents in Vaughan overnight Thursday may have been targeted by the same person who posed as a prospective buyer for items they were selling online. In the first incident, police allege, two people selling a computer arranged to meet a prospective buyer at what they believed to be the buyer's home. 'Upon entering the backyard, the sellers were confronted by the actual homeowner, who told them to leave,' police said in a news release. 'During the encounter, the suspect – posing as the buyer – showed what was believed to be a firearm and fled the area on foot without the computer.' The second incident, police said, occurred shortly after when a victim went to meet with a prospective buyer to sell a computer graphics card. According to police, there was an altercation during the meeting and the victim was struck with a firearm. The suspect fled the area without obtaining the computer part, police said. 'In both incidents, the suspect description was similar and investigators believe the same individual may be responsible,' the news release continued. Police issued a public safety warning Thursday, urging residents to 'exercise caution' when attempting to buy or sell items through online marketplaces. 'When buying or selling items online, we strongly encourage the use of designated Buy and Sell Exchange Zones located at our police district headquarters,' the release read. 'These areas are monitored and provide a safer alternative to meeting strangers in unfamiliar locations. Alternatively, buyers and sellers are encouraged to meet in areas that are well-lit and populated.'
