Organic Farm Estate Forges New Partnership with Iconic Department Store

A prominent organic estate will further strengthen its ties with one of the UK's most iconic high-end department stores.
The 12,500-acre Rhug Estate, based near Corwen in North Wales, already supplies its award-winning Wild Beauty range to Fortnum and Mason in London's Piccadilly.
With a history dating back to 1707, the independent retailer – famed for its quality food products, exotic items and luxury hampers – is one of the premium venues in the country.
And now, following exploratory discussions and a visit by Fresh Food Buyer Antonio Zoccola to the Denbighshire site – one of only seven businesses in Wales to hold a prestigious Royal Warrant of Appointment from His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen – Fortnum and Mason will be stocking and distributing Rhug's internationally-acclaimed organic salt marsh lamb.
After a tour of the Estate which included the café, farm shop and cutting plant, Antonio said:
'It has been fantastic to take a closer look at the operation here, and to learn more about the environmental, organic and regenerative practices Rhug Estate is so well known for.
'We were particularly excited to extend the partnership as Fortnum and Mason is also a business focused on sustainable practices, animal welfare, quality and innovation – there is a real synergy.'
He added:
'We will be looking to stock the lamb at Picadilly initially, I'm sure it will be a big hit with our customers.'
Rhug Estate owner Lord Newborough looks forward to working even closer with Fortnum and Mason and supplying them with high-quality meat products already distributed to hotels, restaurants and retailers across the UK, the Middle East and Far East.
Salt marsh lamb is produced on the Estate's coastal farm Tŷ Mawr, near Caernarfon, by Deio Hughes and family.
Given the unique environment, the lamb has a distinctive flavour sought after by top chefs throughout the world.
'The sweet, delicate taste the salt marsh grasses produce, combined with the organic farming system Deio uses, produce a mouthwatering texture to our lamb,' he said.
'The meat is in season and incredibly popular, so we are delighted to now be supplying it to Fortnum and Mason and look forward to forging even closer links with them in the years ahead.'

Four dead in crash after Spanish police chase ram raiders

Four people were killed when a gang of suspected ram raiders crashed into oncoming traffic during a high-speed police chase on Spain's Costa del Sol on Thursday. In an attempt to evade police cars, a van carrying the three alleged thieves swerved onto the wrong side of a motorway near Torremolinos and collided with a vehicle driven by an off-duty police officer. The three suspects are believed to have died instantly. Their bodies were removed from the wreckage by firefighters. The fourth victim, a police officer, was 'extracted from his vehicle by local police officers but later died', Malaga emergency services said. Identified only as Antonio, the 48-year-old officer was a member of the so-called Gotham Group, a branch of the Spanish police that works secretly at night to combat crime in the tourist hotspot. He had been driving towards his home in Benalmádena after finishing his shift. Police had been on the lookout for a gang believed to be behind a series of night-time ram raids on pharmacies in the Malaga area. Just before 5am, an alarm alerted officers to a break-in at a pharmacy in the Puerto de la Torre area of the city. The intruders deactivated the security shutters before forcing open the front door, but did not manage to open the safe before police raced to the scene. They escaped along the A7 coastal motorway towards Marbella, with patrol cars in pursuit. After speeding along the wrong side of the road to throw off the pursuit, they crashed into the off-duty officer's car when they took an exit near Torremolinos's Palacio de Congresos conference centre. The officer's car caught fire on impact. The National Police Force and the SUP, a Spanish police officers' union, sent their condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of Antonio. The interior ministry said the government was 'deeply saddened by Antonio's death'. Malaga's pharmacy association called for improved security to halt a 'crime wave' affecting chemists in the province. Four or five similar break-ins have been reported in the region over the past month.

Royal family's favourite wine merchant to open in Washington

Britain's oldest wine merchant has set its sights on America amid growing demand for luxury British brands across the Atlantic. Berry Brothers & Rudd is planning to open its first ever US store in Washington in the coming months. Founded in 1698, Berry Brothers & Rudd is known for its ties with the Royal household, having been the official wine supplier to the Royal family since the beginning of the reign of George III in 1760. It has offices in Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo as well as London, but the opening of a store in the US capital would mark its first bricks-and-mortar expansion in the US. It comes amid rising interest in British heritage brands in America. Companies such as Fortnum & Mason have been expanding their presence stateside in a bid to tap into increasing appetite for authentic British goods. UK gunmaker Holland & Holland has credited a jump in its US sales from £425,000 to £2.1m last year to an influx of millionaires to Texas. It runs a gun room in Dallas. The company said at the time: 'There's always been a long standing appreciation for the brand in the US. Affluent Americans love the English aristocracy, Royal family and our links [with the Royal family]. That connection is a very romantic notion for a lot of affluent Americans.' It follows a deepening of ties between the Trump administration and Sir Keir Starmer's Labour Government. A meeting at the White House in February at which Sir Keir gave Mr Trump an invitation for a state visit from the King was widely hailed as a 'love-in', while the more recent signing of a trade deal between the US and UK was described as a 'fantastic, historic day' by Sir Keir – even though it still left many companies facing a 10pc tariff to export their products to the US. A spokesman for Berry Brothers & Rudd said: 'This marks a key milestone in our international growth and we look forward to serving a wider community of customers across the US.' Expansion comes as the British wine industry reels from a barrage of tax increases that the industry says has made the UK a less appealing market to do business in. Bosses are grappling with rising National Insurance contributions for employers and the incoming Extended Producer Responsibility packaging tax, as well as a shake up of alcohol taxation which has inflated administrative costs. A senior wine industry executive said: '[The Government is] genuinely killing our industry. It's not hyperbole, everyone's just in despair. Nobody can invest. Everyone's been driven to go and do business abroad now, because there's no point doing much here.' 'The fine wine business is beginning to move out of the UK.' the person added. The decision by Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor, to raise employers' National Insurance (NI) contributions was one of several factors that Berry Brothers & Rudd blamed for a decision to cut around 30 of its 400 staff this year. Emma Fox, the chief executive, said at the time: 'Like many businesses, we are having to make some very difficult but necessary decisions in the face of extremely challenging global market conditions, as well as significant cost pressures, high inflation and recent increases in NI contributions.'
