Gauteng man identified after fatal explosion during cash-in-transit heist, losing his leg and body parts
The Hawks have confirmed that man who died in a failed cash-in-transit heist in Thokoza, after being blown up by explosives which were used in an attempted robbery has been identified.
The Hawks in Gauteng have confirmed that the man who allegedly 'blew himself up' with explosives during a failed cash-in-transit heist last week in Thokoza, on the East Rand, has been identified by his family.
IOL News reported that the suspect died in the early hours of Tuesday morning during a botched robbery in Phola Park Extension 5.
The man reportedly lost his life during the incident in which a group of armed suspects attempted to bomb a cash van.
According to police, at least 10 suspects were involved in the heist.
The suspects allegedly rammed the cash van with a silver BMW at the intersection of Khumalo and Murubisi streets.
'One of the suspects exited the vehicle with live explosives and attempted to detonate them near the cash van,' said police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko.
'Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect sustained a serious injury during the explosion. The vehicle used in the ramming was left behind.'
Images of the aftermath, including a dislocated leg near the blast site, have circulated widely on social media.
Meanwhile, Hawks spokesperson in Gauteng Colonel Katlego Mogale confirmed the death, saying the matter has been handed over to the Hawks for investigation.
'The investigation is still in its early stages, but one of the suspects did blow himself up while trying to detonate the cash van, losing his life in the process,' Mogale told IOL News.
She added that Forensic Pathology Services determined the suspect was killed by the explosion.
'Unfortunately, no Forensic Pathology Service picked up body parts at the scene, (but) at private premises and (a) nearby open veld'
Although the Forensic Pathology Service collected no remains on the scene, Mogale confirmed that the suspect was later identified with the assistance of family members.
'The body has been identified with the assistance of the family and the investigation continues as no suspects were arrested on the scene,' she added.
No arrests were made at the scene.
At that time, Sibeko confirmed that no money was taken during the attempted robbery.
The suspects reportedly fled in three other vehicles.
The Hawks are investigating cases of armed robbery and attempted murder.

Lawyer entrusted with R6 million set to appear in court for fraud
A practising attorney, entrusted with about R6 million, is set to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court. She faces numerous charges, including fraud, theft, contravention of the Attorneys Act, and money laundering. The 47-year-old lawyer was allegedly entrusted with the R6 million in cash from an estate. Warrant Officer, Fikiswa Matoti, says the Hawks' Serious Commercial Crime Investigation in Bloemfontein served the attorney with a summons. 'This amount was supposed to be held in a trust account on behalf of the complainant, but it was kept in the suspect's personal account. This resulted in the complainant losing about R3,4 million,' said Matoti. According to SAPS, it was also discovered that the lawyer was practising without a fidelity fund certificate as required. A criminal case docket was registered and handed to the Hawks for further investigation, which led to the arrest of the suspect. Earlier this year, a 35-year-old attorney was also arrested by Hawks. The lawyer allegedly aided a person to escape police custody in Limpopo. Spokesperson, Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa said the first suspect was arrested for theft of a motor vehicle. 'He was handcuffed, and while police officials were busy with the arrangements to take the suspect to the police station, his attorney took him to his vehicle (attorney's car) and drove away at high speed.' Provincial head of the Hawks in Limpopo, Major General Gopz Govender, welcomed the arrest of the attorney. He also strongly warned against interfering with official police duties.] Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 11. 10 years later: Pastor convicted for operating R329m ponzi scheme in Cape Town
Pastor Colin Davids Image: file It has taken 10 years to convict Pastor Colin Davids of Platinum Forex CC, and his co-accused Derek Bredenkamp, who were found guilty of operating a ponzi scheme, soliciting investments worth R329 million from the public. The duo were convicted of fraud on Tuesday following a mammoth court case running since 2015. In 2015, the Western Cape High Court granted the preservation order to seize the assets of Platinum Forex. It was due to the successful investigation of the Financial intelligence Centre (FIC), the Hawks and the police that led to the conviction. The State proved that Platinum Forex, a close corporation based in Parow, unlawfully collected more than R100 million from unsuspecting members of the public under the guise that it was a lawful investor that invests in foreign exchange investments (forex). It was also proven that Platinum Forex was not registered as a financial service provider and was not lawfully entitled to conduct the business of a banker. According to Hawks spokesperson, Siyabulela Vukubi, Davids, 56, and Bredenkamp, 58, were convicted of fraud in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crimes Court. 'During the period 2009 to 2015, Colin Davids, Platinum Forex CC and Derek Bredenkamp operated a ponzi scheme. "They solicited investments from the public to the amount of R329 million. "They promised investors a monthly return of 2% to 8% and guaranteed the invested amount at the end of the investment period. "The accused paid investors with another investors' money and alternatively with the new investors' money. 'The matter was investigated by the Hawks' Bellville-based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation and the court eventually found the three accused guilty on: Count 1: Contravention of section 7(1) Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act 37 of 2002; Count 2: Contravention of section 11(1) of the Banks Act 94 of 1990; one count of money laundering by contravening of Section 4 of POCA, Act 121 of 1998; and 56 counts of fraud. 'A confiscation order of approximately R100 million was granted against the accused and his business. 'Furthermore, the accused bail has been cancelled and they were remanded in custody awaiting sentencing that will be handed down on June 18, 2025.' According to previous court papers, shared via the National Prosecuting Authority, investigations showed that contrary to the promise made to clients that their monies would be invested in the forex market, some of the monies were in fact "invested" in short-term investment accounts held with ACM Gold and Forex Trading (Pty) Ltd, a Gauteng-based entity and Nedbank. The court papers states that Davids used some of the investors' funds to pay for two immovable properties in Plattekloof and Hermanus, motor vehicles for his wife, household expenses from retail stores such as Woolworths, Checkers and Pick n Pay. eThekwini Municipality responds to sabotage claims in Zandile Gumede's fraud trial
Former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede and her supporters. Image: Nomonde Zondi The eThekwini Municipality has on Thursday stated that it has no intention to sabotage the R320 million Durban Solid Waste (DSW) tender trial against its former mayor Zandile Gumede. Gumede is currently on trial with 21 others at the Durban High Court for numerous charges, including money laundering, racketeering, fraud, corruption, and contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act and the Municipal Systems Act, relating to the tender. The Head of legal and compliance in the city, Malusi Mhlongo, said eThekwini was the complainant in Gumede's case. 'It is in our interest as the city for that matter to proceed,' he said. Mhlongo said there were accusations that eThekwini's City Integrity and Investigations Unit (CIIU) terminated the agreement of Integrity Forensic Solutions CC (IFS) and the Hawks to sabotage Gumede's case. He said that is not true, explaining that the agreement was entered before the former CIIU boss resigned. The IFS is the company that investigated the DSW tender irregularities after the CIIU anonymously received a stack of documents regarding the tender. In terms of that agreement, Mhlongo said the IFS was supposed to assist the Hawks and the prosecutors, and all their expenses were supposed to be paid by the municipality. Mhlongo stated that the reason the agreement between the CIIU, the Hawks, and the IFS was terminated was that the former acting head of the CIIU questioned why the municipality had to bear the costs while it was the complainant. As a result, the former acting head of CIIU terminated the agreement. He said the IFS took the municipality to court to review that decision. 'That matter is in court and it is still to be resolved,' Mhlongo added. Additionally, he said after the city reported Gumede's matter to law enforcement authorities, it was within its rights to save further use of ratepayers' money and say it's not liable for these costs because the State is now responsible for compensating the witnesses. Meanwhile, Gumede's case faced another setback on Thursday as the ninth accused, Bagcinile Nzuza, was ill. Nzuza is the wife of former city manager, Sipho Nzuza.
