The development of the Republic's public charging network for electric vehicles (EVs) has continued apace with the deployment of 38 fast chargers in 19 publicly accessible carparks.
The latest of these chargers, which started operating on April 28, have been installed at Fajar Shopping Centre in Bukit Panjang and Taman Jurong Shopping Centre in Jurong West.
This completes the roll-out of a batch of fast chargers that started in November 2024 with the ones at the Woodlands Civic Centre.
The carparks are mostly in Housing Board-owned commercial properties, other than Revenue House, which is owned by the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore.
They are found, among others, at 888 Plaza in Woodlands, Connection One in Bukit Merah, Dawson Place in Queenstown, Limbang Shopping Centre in Choa Chu Kang and Elias Mall in Pasir Ris.
EV-Electric Charging, a subsidiary of the Land Transport Authority responsible for EV charging deployment, said this is part of the Government's plan to have 120 fast chargers at around 60 HDB carparks in commercial complexes, town and neighbourhood centres. This is targeted to be completed progressively around 2025.
These are public carparks frequented by high-mileage EV users such as those driving taxis and private-hire cars.
HDB manages over 2,000 carparks in Singapore.
The 38 fast chargers that have been deployed are operated by ComfortDelGro-owned CDG Engie and Keppel-owned Volt Singapore, under a tender awarded in June 2024.
Rated at between 60 kilowatt (kW) and 120kW, they can add as much as 100km of driving range to a typical EV in 10 minutes. Depending on the operator and location, it costs between 65 cents and 73 cents for each kilowatt-hour to use them.
The rates exclude parking fees.
In contrast, the majority of chargers deployed in HDB carparks are rated at around 7.4kW, which are more suited for overnight charging.
It takes more than two hours to dispense the same amount of electricity as a 120kW fast charger will manage in 10 minutes.
Slow chargers are priced between 60 cents and 73 cents per kilowatt-hour.
In a separate tender, 20 locations, mostly in industrial areas, will see fast chargers being rolled out progressively from end-2025. This, according to Ms Stephanie Tan, EV-Electric's chief executive, is intended to support the electrification of commercial fleets.
Responding to a query by The Straits Times on future charger deployment plans at public carparks, a spokeswoman for EV-Electric said that the company will take into consideration factors like EV adoption rate and demand for chargers to encourage and support electrification across different vehicle types.
The upcoming fast chargers will be operated by ST Engineering Urban Solutions and SP Mobility, a subsidiary of SP Group. The locations of the publicly accessible carparks are as follows:
20 Ayer Rajah Crescent
28 Ayer Rajah Crescent
55 Ayer Rajah Crescent
73 Ayer Rajah Crescent
Bulim Square
JTC Food Hub @ Senoko
JTC Launchpad @ One-North
JTC Logistics Hub @ Gul
JTC Space @ Ang Mo Kio
LTA Hampshire office
LTA Sin Ming office
Kranji Green
Oasis Jurong Island

As at April, the population of electric cars in Singapore stands at 32,156 units, up from 26,225 in 2024 and 11,941 in 2023.

Qualcomm strengthens AI portfolio with US$2.4 billion Alphawave deal
[BENGALURU] US chipmaker Qualcomm agreed to acquire Alphawave for about US$2.4 billion on Monday (Jun 9), as part of efforts to strengthen its AI technology, sending shares of the British semiconductor company up by almost a quarter. Alphawave is the latest British company to be snapped up in a market plagued by low valuations and stunted growth, with US buyers swooping on firms at comparatively low prices and better-performing bourses proving more attractive for share listings. Alphawave shareholders will receive 183 pence per share – a near 96 per cent premium to the March 31 closing price immediately before Qualcomm disclosed its interest. By 0837 GMT, the stock was up 23.1 per cent, trading just above the offer price. Jefferies analysts said they do not expect the deal to meet any material regulatory obstacles, after Alphawave exited its Chinese joint venture, WiseWave, on Monday. Qualcomm also made two alternative all-share offers for Alphawave on Monday after multiple deadline extensions from the UK takeover panel. However, Alphawave plans to unanimously recommend the cash offer to its shareholders, deeming it fair and reasonable. Separately, US-based quantum computing company IonQ agreed to buy UK tech start-up Oxford Ionics in a US$1.1 billion deal. Sign Up Sign Up Alphawave, which designs semiconductor tech for data centres, networking, and storage, is a strategic buy for Qualcomm, which announced its return to the data centre CPU market in May. 'Alphawave has developed leading high-speed wired connectivity and compute technologies that are complementary to our power-efficient central processing unit (CPU) and neural processing unit (NPU) cores,' Cristiano Amon, president and CEO of Qualcomm, said. Alphawave also garnered takeover interest in April from SoftBank-owned Arm for its 'serdes' tech, which boosts chip data processing speeds – key for AI development – and underpins Broadcom's and Marvell Technology's multibillion-dollar custom chip businesses. Arm walked away after initial discussions with Alphawave, Reuters exclusively reported in April citing sources. REUTERS

Queenstown 5-room flat resold for S$1.66 million, setting new record
SINGAPORE: A five-room loft unit at SkyTerrace@Dawson has fetched a staggering S$1,658,888, setting a new record for the highest resale price of a five-room HDB flat according to official data released by the Housing and Development Board (HDB). The premium loft apartment, located on the 22nd to 24th floors of Block 92 Dawson Road, spans 122 square metres and is part of the highly sought-after SkyTerrace@Dawson development in Queenstown. The sale was completed earlier this month. Built under HDB's Build-To-Order (BTO) scheme as part of its efforts to rejuvenate mature estates, SkyTerrace@Dawson is known for its award-winning architecture, greenery-lined sky terraces, and proximity to amenities such as Queenstown MRT and Dawson Place. The unit is approximately nine years old and still has 89 years and 11 months left on its 99-year lease. While the sale marks a new high in HDB's public resale transaction records for five-room flats, it falls just shy of an even higher-profile transaction from last year. In July last year, a five-room flat at SkyOasis@Dawson was reportedly sold for nearly S$1.73 million, drawing attention for being the priciest HDB resale flat on record. However, that sale doesn't show up in HDB's official transaction database. Such high resale prices have sparked ongoing debate. As more million-dollar flats hit the market, questions about the affordability of HDB flats persist.
