Protests Against Artificial Intelligence Planned For Annecy Animation Fest
Protests against the use of artificial intelligence in animation are planned at this week's Annecy fest, Deadline understands.
A slew of AI-related talks are set to take place over the next 72 hours at the festival's MIFA market and we are told that small groups of protestors are prepared to make their voices heard.

Figures from the animation industry are extremely worried about the impact of AI on the workforce. The main fears revolve around layoffs as more and more animated processes become automated, while there are also copyright concerns.
Last week, French outlet Écran Total reported that a coalition of unions, federations and international organizations from the animation, video game and other sectors are planning an open-air meeting close to the festival's Bonlieu hub in Annecy on Thursday: 'to draw attention to the destructive impact of generative artificial intelligence on the global animation industry.'
The group plans to read out a statement, extracts of which were reported by Écran Total.
'It is an undeniable fact: the animated film industry has been suffering greatly for several years,' it reads, citing challenges such as 'massive layoffs, the offshoring of jobs, mergers, liquidations and receiverships that lead to the closure of studios and increasingly restricted budgets.'
'The rapid expansion of generative AI in animation is driven by the belief that it is a response to the crisis,' continues the statement, adding: 'Generative AI is not a tool, nor is it efficient or profitable. It is a biased, destructive, and expensive copycat machine to operate. (…) It endangers the creative and technical professions in each of the industries cited, which will ultimately lead not only to an inevitable loss of knowledge and talent lost forever, but also to the privatization of all artistic processes and of thought itself.'
Signatories of the statement include America's The Animation Guild, Belgium's A.B.R.AC.A. (Association gathering authors and creators of animation), French animation guild l'AGrAF and screenwriters orgs La Guilde and Le Syndicat des Scénaristes.
Some 18,000 animation professionals and students are attending Annecy this year, and with AI expected to disrupt their futures, it is a major topic as the MIFA market gets underway Tuesday.
'It feels as though we're toast,' said one senior animation exec on the ground. 'People are talking about losing 50% of the workforce.'
This isn't the first time AI concerns have hit Annecy. Last year, it was reported that audience members booed the screening of Chien Mechant's French music video Etoile Filante, which was made using generative AI software.

'Misericordia' Review - A Casually Chaotic Queer Dark Comedy
Logline: A tantalizing thriller unfolds against a pastoral country setting in the latest from French auteur Alain Guiraudie (Stranger by the Lake). Jérémie (Félix Kysyl) returns to his hometown for the funeral of his beloved former boss, the village baker, and decides to stay for a few days with the man's widow, Martine (Catherine Frot). Before long a threatening former rival, a mysterious disappearance, and an omnipresent priest turn Jérémie's short visit into a gathering of the unexpected. Even the nicest people have a breaking point. No matter how quiet, kind, or seemingly meek you assume someone is, just know that if you push the wrong buttons or strike the right nerve, a delicate and non-threatening Caesar mushroom can actually be a death cap. The analogy will make sense when you watch the film. Not only do people have a limit to how much nonsense they can withstand, but you never know what someone is going through. You may not have to worry about being their thirteenth reason, but you could be their first victim. Be kind and stay alive. 'I think he's completely crazy.' No matter how careful you are or how sneaky you think you're being, the secret will always eventually be revealed. Written and directed by Alain Guiraudie, Misericordia is a casually chaotic queer dark comedy. With a dash of mystery, a heap of suspense, and more subtle humor than you can handle, this fatal French subterfuge is the hidden gem you want to find. Championing genuinely hilarious and awkward moments along with an affinity for mushroom foraging, the film is loaded with subtext that gets increasingly more outrageous as the story progresses. Veiled in suspicion and clouded by uncertainty, everyone in this idyllic town seems to be hiding something. There's violence, manipulation, sexual tension, and more than a few lies. And just the narrative gets juicy and truths are uncovered, the most surprising one exposes itself in more ways than one. Our lead, Jérémie, has the most to hide, but with how his life has been going, also the most to gain. Furthermore, as we witness the mystery unfolding from his perspective, you're plagued with one moral conundrum after another. The first instinct is to cut and run, but if Jérémie is for the messiness, then so are we. Come for the drama but stay for the absurdity. 'You'll learn to love me.' Wrapped and thriving in a Shakespearean essence, this eerily calm enigma is as much about identity as it is about deceit. In some ways, they're intertwined. While some aspects of the film can be interpreted as battling the rejection of your truth, other parts can be seen as an outward projection of internal conflict. With an initial atmosphere and aesthetic that feels cold and aloof, by the end, you'll feel its warm, firm embrace. You'll be left both shocked and entertained. The talented performances drive the experience as the sophisticated yet approachable writing of Guiraudie breathes exuberance into its dry wit. There are some beautiful shots with a set and costume design that feature dark and muted colors, perfectly matching the tone. If you're a fan of Alain Guiraudie's work, this is sure to delight. Its rewatchability is medium. From (L to R) FÉLIX KYSYL as Jérémie, SALOMÉ LOPES as Young Police Officer, SÉBASTIEN FAGLAIN as The Policeman, TATIANA SPIVAKOVA as Annie, CATHERINE FROT as Martine, DAVID AYALA as Walter Pace & Pop This film maintains a curious pace and tone for the entire runtime. Combining comedy, mystery, and thriller sensibilities, you never quite know what's coming next. What popped for me was the diabolically reserved nature of Jérémie as casual chaos ensues. From (L to R) Félix Kysyl as Jérémie and Jacques Develay as The Abbot in 'Misericordia' Characters & Chemistry Starring: Félix Kysyl, Catherine Frot, Jean-Baptiste Durand, Jacques Develay This ensemble cast is amazingly effective. Their subtle and layered performances are the lifeblood of the film. The dry delivery, the hungry stares, and the loud, panicked nonchalance are intriguing and hysterical. Between the unraveling psyche of Félix Kysyl's Jérémie and the ever-lingering priest played by Jacques Develay, their performances awaken the film's dangerously adventurous and addictive qualities. Let me not forget the deeply curious and somewhat suspicious performance of Catherine Frot. Misericordia is now streaming on the Criterion Channel. Stay safe and keep an eye on the sneaky priest. Disney+ launches new £1.99 deal, but it won't be around forever
Sign up to Disney+ For a limited time Disney+ is offering subscribers the chance to sign up to the streaming platform for just £1.99 per month. The deal will give users access to some of the biggest shows of the moment, and the deal is being launched just in time for the releases of The Bear, Alien: Earth, and the streaming debut of Snow White. And that doesn't even take into consideration the huge back catalogue of the company which boasts recent hits like Andor, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives and Good American Family. Here is everything you need to know to nab yourself the limited time deal. Disney+'s new deal is valid from 11 June until 30 June, and the good news is that both new and returning customers are eligible for this lower-priced subscription. The deal is only for Disney+ Standard with Ads and it will cost £1.99 per month for four months before auto-renewing to the then-current monthly price until the subscription is cancelled. This deal will save users £12 compared to Disney+'s regular monthly price for those four months. At the moment the subscription deal costs £4.99 per month. So what does the Disney+ Standard with Ads give you? Well it of course includes Ad-supported streaming with adverts catered to the platform's audience. Users on this tier will also be able to enjoy ip to 1080p Full HD video quality as well as 5.1 audio, and they will be able to stream on two devices at any time. One of the things that subscribers on the Disney+ Standard with Ads tier won't get is the ability to download shows and movies to watch on the go. But, if you're not too bothered by that, then the tier might be just right for you. Unlike the other subscription tiers on Disney+ there is no yearly plan for Disney+ Standard with Ads, so users will have to pay monthly to access the streamer. There are currently two other subscription tiers: Disney+ Standard and Disney+ Premium, while those wishing to give access to a person outside their household can also choose to sign up for the Extra Member subscription at an extra £3.99 (for Standard with Ads) or £4.99 (for Standard and Premium). What's to come on Disney+ from 11 June then? Quite a lot actually, as mentioned the next big releases on the platform include series 4 of the critically-acclaimed drama The Bear from 26 June, while Marvel fans can dive into the newest series, Ironheart, from 25 June. The limited time deal comes just in time for the streaming debut of Snow White on 11 June, while the hotly-anticipated FX series Alien: Earth lands on the platform on 13 August. As well as new shows and movies Disney+ is also home to award-winning films from Searchlight Pictures like A Real Pain and Poor Things, as well as fascinating documentaries through National Geographic. The Marvel and Star Wars franchises are also available to stream in full on the platform, as well as FX and Hulu series through the platform's Star Originals category. So there really is plenty to enjoy on Disney+.

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. While Disney is primarily known for their princesses and fairy tales, 2002's Lilo & Stitch has held a special place in many Disney fans' hearts as it centered on the mischievous alien Stitch as he learns the true meaning of family. Disney hopes that will prove true again for a new generation with the live-action Lilo & Stitch, now playing. The 2025 new movie continues the trend of Disney live-action remakes (one we saw earlier in 2025 with Snow White), but early buzz has Lilo & Stitch among the top-end of these entries from the mega studio. And amid the slate of summer blockbuster movies, Lilo & Stitch is one that will hopefully satisfy the kiddos for a couple of hours. Find out everything you need to know about how to watch Lilo & Stitch directly below. Lilo & Stitch is now playing in movie theaters in the US, UK and worldwide.
