85kg heroin haul: Accused's house served as stash point for drugs
The accused Amarjot Singh alias Jota, a resident of Bhittewad village in Amritsar district, from which a stash of 85kg heroin was recovered is an addict and was working on the directions of his UK-based drug handler Lalli, police said on Friday.
Tarn Taran police, which is investigating the case, said his main task was to collect the small consignments sent via drones from across the border and then deliver it further as directed by Lalli. He is basically a storekeeper. His house at Bhittewad village served as a stash point for the network, police added.
According to information gathered from Tarn Taran Police, the consignment used to arrive from Pakistan in small quantities via drones.
The main accused's task was to collect and store it. A preliminary probe has pointed out that the reason behind collecting the small quantities to store at the place was that the peddlers wanted to sell the stash when the demand was at its peak. The police's campaign against drugs has already choked the supply and the accused anticipated that when the demand will peak, they will sell the stash for huge profit,' said Tarn Taran SSP Abhimanyu Rana.
Rana said that Jota, a pharmacist, was just a cog in the network and the police probe is on to bust the entire module.
'The biggest problem for the police in the ongoing probe is that UK-based smuggler Lalli, who was handling Jota, is not a known smuggler. We are still hunting for his details, address and linkages in Punjab and Pakistan. Detailed probe is on. Special teams are closely working on it. The mobile phone of the accused has also been sent for forensic examination,' the SSP added.

Following the digital arrest case of a 75-year-old retired engineer, the South-East cyber crime police arrested two men, including an industrialist from Hyderabad, who allegedly received the money in their bank accounts. The police also exposed the link of a casino in Sri Lanka to the cyber fraud which is being probed in detail. The accused according to the police trapped the victim, posing as CBI and ED officials, and threatened to book him for money laundering three months ago, and forced him to pay ₹4.7 crore over a period of time. The accused even forced him to share property documents which they tried to use as collateral to get personal loans. The police, based on a tip-off from their Chennai counterparts, approached the victim, who was not aware of the scam and was transferring the money to different accounts. He had recently transferred ₹10 lakh to the account belonging to the driver of Ishwar Singh, a Hyderabad-based businessman. Based on the information, a police team tracked down Ishwar Singh who confessed that he had gone to Sri Lanka to gamble in the casino with ₹25 lakh. After losing ₹15 lakh, he returned to Hyderabad and asked for a refund for the rest of the money from the accused in the casino. The accused asked the victim posing as CBI officials to transfer the money to Ishwar. 'He was unaware that the money he received is part of a cyber crime,' a police officer said, adding that the money has been seized and returned to the victim. Meanwhile, the police also detained Ramnarayana Choudhary, an industrialist from Hyderabad, whose account the accused had used to transfer the money. The police found that Choudhary received ₹1.8 crore in his account which was later transferred to different accounts in Guntur and Vishakhapatnam. The police said that both Choudhary and Singh were unaware that the money they had received in their accounts belonged to cyber crime. The police have warned people not to share their bank accounts with anyone, while a probe is on to track down the accused and expose the links of cyber frauds and casino in Sri Lanka, said Sarah Fathima, DCP (South-East division).

Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina's son visits India to meet her
New Delhi: Former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina's US-based son, Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed, is in India to meet his mother, people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. Wazed, who has emerged as a key voice for the Awami League party, arrived in the country ahead of Eid-ul-Adha in order to celebrate the festival with his mother, currently living in self-exile in New Delhi, the people said on condition of anonymity. Hasina fled to India after the dramatic collapse of the Awami League government in the face of nationwide protests led by student groups last August. She is currently living in a safe house in the heart of the Indian capital. There was no word from Indian officials on the visit by Wazed, an American citizen who is also known by his nickname of Joy. 'Hasina's son is visiting India primarily to celebrate Eid with his mother. He is the first visitor she has received since she arrived in India in August last year,' a person close to the Awami League said. The people said there are currently no plans for Wazed to participate in any public events. Details of his itinerary too are not known, they said. The Indian side is yet to respond to a request from Bangladesh's interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus to extradite Hasina, who is facing charges in multiple criminal cases registered against her.
