UTT Season 6: U Mumba TT eye playoffs, Dabang Delhi TTC chase history in final league stage tie
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India] June 11 (ANI): U Mumba TT will have their sights set on a semi-final berth when they take on playoffs-bound Dabang Delhi TTC in the Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 6 on Thursday. There is a lot on the line for Delhi, too, who are aiming to become the first team in history to pass through the league stage unbeaten.
U Mumba sit fifth on the table with 32 points; their playoff chances rest not just on a win, but also on the outcome of the Jaipur Patriots vs PBG Pune Jaguars tie. Five games might be enough, but nothing less than a fight will do for the team from Mumbai.
They come in buoyed by a gritty win over Stanley's Chennai Lions, with Bernadette Szocs, Lilian Bardet, and Yashaswini Ghorpade all in strong form. Szocs and Bardet have each won three of their four matches, while Yashaswini--who beat China's Fan Siqi in her previous outing--has won two of three.
The Szocs-Akash Pal pairing has been a revelation, winning three straight in mixed doubles. Though Akash is yet to win a singles match, his doubles presence remains key. Bardet and Szocs rank among the league's top forehand shot-makers, while Yashaswini has been a backhand machine.
Dabang Delhi, meanwhile, have already locked in their playoff berth, but a win here would etch their names in UTT history. They've been consistently clinical: Diya Chitale, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, Maria Xiao, and Izaac Quek have all won at least two matches each, delivering consistent returns.
The Dabang Delhi pairing of Sathiyan and Maria remains undefeated in mixed doubles (4/4), a rare edge in high-stakes ties. With Izaac and Sathiyan both among the top five in backhand winners, Delhi will be looking to bring precision and power to close out the league stage on a high-and carry the momentum into the semis.

Around an hour into the last league match of the Ultimate Table Tennis Season Six, the moment Quek Izaac hit a forehand topspin out of the table, Akash Pal and Bernadette Szocs – U Mumba TT's tried and tested mixed doubles combination – had a big smile on their faces. The bench also rose to celebrate, with Lilian 'T-Rex' Bardet – who breached G. Sathiyan's defence to start off the night on an ideal note for U Mumba – all smiles along with coaches. The elementary objective of winning five points – and thus confirming the fourth semifinal spot for U Mumba had been achieved. While it meant heartbreak for Kolkata ThunderBlades, glued to their screens at the hotel on the other side of the Sabarmati, U Mumba became the first team to defeat Dabang Delhi TTC this season. The reverse singles saw debutantes' day out, with youngsters fielded by both the teams coming up with an impressive showing. Thanks to his control on the backhand, courtesy a short-pimpled rubber, and forehand winners close to the table, PB Abhinandh surprised Quek Izaac to put U Mumba on the cusp of a win. Suhana Saini, the Delhi debutant, then stretched in-form Yashaswini Ghorpade but couldn't convert two golden points off her senior. Ghorpade's 3-0 win meant U Mumba finished third and avoided a semifinal rematch between the two teams. Homage to plane-crash victims The UTT organisers paid homage to the victims of the Air India plane-crash close to the Ahmedabad airport. Sporting black armbands, both the teams observed a minute's silence at the start of the match. The organisers did not play music right through the evening. UTT Season 6: U Mumba qualify for semis, end Dabang Delhi's unbeaten streak
U Mumba TT secured the fourth and final semi-final spot with a 10-5 win over Dabang Delhi TTC in the Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 6 on Thursday. While the defeat ended Delhi's four-tie winning run, the Season 2 champions still finished top of the league table with 44 points. Both teams wore black armbands and observed a minute's silence before kick-off to pay respect to the victims of the Ahmedabad plane crash tragedy. Lilian Bardet gave U Mumba TT the perfect start, defeating Sathiyan Gnanasekaran 2-1 in the opening singles rubber. After edging a close first game 11-10, Bardet dropped the second 4-11 but responded strongly with an 11-4 win in the decider. Bernadette Szocs followed it up with a 2-1 win over Diya Chitale. Chitale took the first game 11-3, but Szocs levelled with a narrow 11-10 Golden Point win and closed out the match 11-8.
