Marsh back to skipper Australia in Windies T20s, Cummins and Starc rested
Mitchell Marsh will captain Australia in next month's Twenty20 series against West Indies while Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Travis Head have been rested from the 16-man squad, Cricket Australia said on Wednesday.
All-rounder Marsh had missed Australia's last T20 series against Pakistan in November, with wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis leading the side in his absence.
Batter Mitchell Owen, 23, has earned his first call-up to the squad after his fine season with Hobart Hurricanes, helping them to their first Big Bash League title by scoring the joint-fastest century in the tournament's history in the final.
Glenn Maxwell, who retired from one-day internationals to focus on next year's T20 World Cup, has also been named in the squad but there was no place for batter Jake Fraser-McGurk or all-rounder Marcus Stoinis.
'We have a busy T20 schedule coming up through this series … as we continue to refine and build a squad we think will be the right fit for the World Cup on the subcontinent,' chair of selectors George Bailey said in a statement.
'There are a number of players outside the squad who can still force their way into the mix for those upcoming Indian Series and through the Big Bash.
'The connection, role development and combinations we will have as options are growing nicely as we build towards the World Cup.'
Australia will play five T20s against the West Indies, with the opener taking place in Kingston on July 21.

Brazil held in Ancelotti debut
Carlo Ancelotti's debut as coach of Brazil ended in a goalless draw in Ecuador in South American World Cup qualifying on Thursday. The 65-year-old Italian, who left Real Madrid at the end of the European season, has been charged with taking Brazil through the latter stages of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. But the home side were dealt a blow just before kick-off when goalkeeper Hernan Galindez suffered a muscle strain in the warm-up and replacement Gonzalo Valle was hurriedly sent out to make his debut. If Valle had any nerves they eased when he did well to parry a shot from inside the box from Vinicius Jr. who had been set up by Gerson following a turnover. Chances were limited in a contest where neither side was able to get control of midfield. The pattern continued after the break with Ecuador, missing their injured striker and talisman Enner Valencia, struggling to pose a threat. Real Madrid star Vinicius was quiet for much of the game and with Rodrygo absent, Brazil also lacked potency in attack. The best opening came in the 75th minute when Vinicius broke down the left and cut back to Casemiro.

South Africa name squad for Zimbabwe Test
South Africa have unveiled their squad for the upcoming two-Test series against Zimbabwe, set to begin later this month in Bulawayo. The squad features five uncapped players, with 19-year-old batting sensation Lhuan-dre Pretorius headlining the selection following his breakout performances in domestic cricket. Joining Pretorius in line for a potential Test debut are Dewald Brevis, Lesego Senokwane, Codi Yusuf, and Prenelan Subrayen. The series does not fall under the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27, as Zimbabwe are not part of the current cycle. It will instead serve as a developmental opportunity for head coach Shukri Conrad to test new talent and build squad depth ahead of the 20252027 WTC cycle. Brevis initially rose to prominence as the leading run-scorer in the 2022 ICC Under-19 World Cup. Kwena Maphaka, who made his debut earlier this year against Pakistan, will lead the pace attack alongside Lungi Ngidi. "Nandre has been cleared to play T20s. We'll reintroduce him gradually, starting with the shortest format, before "Nandre has been given the all-clear by the medical team to play T20s. The plan is to ease him back into the game, starting with the shortest format, and then slowly work him up to the longer formats," Conrad said. "We'll be keeping a close eye on how he handles the workload as he builds toward playing Test cricket again. "Lizaad is progressing well and is currently in the final phase of his rehabilitation from his knee surgery." New Zealand name Walter as new coach in all formats
South African Rob Walter was appointed New Zealand coach in all formats on Friday in the wake of Gary Stead's decision to stand down after seven years in charge. Stead announced on Wednesday that he would be leaving the job of test coach at the end of the month, having already relinquished the short format roles in April. Walter, 49, was most recently coach of South Africa's One-day international and Twenty20 teams but knows New Zealand cricket well after stints in charge of provincial teams as well as his time overseeing a Black Caps "A" tour of India in 2022. "The Black Caps have been a successful and highly-regarded team on the world scene for some time now and it's a real privilege to be given the chance to add to that," Walter said in a New Zealand Cricket statement. "It's an amazing opportunity to work with such a talented group of players and support staff through a period of time in which so many global events, as well as massive bilateral series, will be contested." Walter, who led South Africa to the semi-finals of the 2023 World Cup and final of last year's Twenty20 World Cup, is contracted through to the end of the 2028 World Cup, which New Zealand is co-hosting with Australia. "Rob is a world-class coach with an outstanding pedigree," said NZC chief executive Scott Weenink. "His success in New Zealand's domestic game, combined with his recent achievements on the global stage with South Africa, makes him the ideal candidate to lead the Black Caps." New Zealand's next international matches come in July at the start of their tour of Zimbabwe, where they will play two tests and a Twenty20 tri-series also involving South Africa.
