72nd Annual Reunion for those who once lived in Dunbarton, Sc
BLACKVILLE, Sc (WJBF) – The town of Dunbarton in Barnwell County was one of 7 towns whose residents were displaced by the Savannah River Project in the early 1950's.
Margaret Rountree lived in Dunbarton as a child and has helped keep the reunions going for more than 7 decades.
The reunion is held every year at the Community Building at Barnwell State Park.
This is the 72nd year of the reunion and Rountree says there are now 3 generations learning about a town that once was.
'When the Savannah River Plant came, everybody had to relocate, and they scattered but we have been able to get together and renew old friendships. Everybody has such a desire to keep it going so we can have that contact of the descendants of the original Dunbarton people' Rountree said.
Dunbarton was not the only town affected by the Savannah River Project, but towns including Ellenton and Meyers Mill as well.
I had the chance to speak with not only Margaret but the children and grandchildren of those who lived in Dunbarton including Tony Dicks who serves as the President of the Dunbarton Citizens Group.
'It's good to see it all. I didn't know what Dunbarton looked like, that was four years prior to me being born but the photographs bring it to me now, I've seen some things at my house that we sheds and stuff like that, I never knew where they came from, they had been moved out of Dunbarton because you can see in the photographs on some of the houses and stuff.' Dicks said.
At the reunion, they had pictures of every house that was in the town as well as old yearbooks, newspaper articles and pictures of the townspeople.
Rountree was 20 years old when she and her family were moved out of the town, she reminisced on one of her favorite memories in Dunbarton with her friends.
'That car if you'll see has running boards and fenders on it and we had more that could get in the car and so they'd hold on to the fenders and the running boards and we'd ride out to the pond, and we would roast weenies and have hotdogs and sometimes boiled peanuts.' said Rountree.
The SRS site now covers over 300 square miles across towns including Aike, Allendale and Barnwell.
Rountree has continued these reunions in honor of those who lived in Dunbarton and their ancestors.

McDuffie Co. school leaders expect to open new elementary school in time for upcoming school year
THOMSON, Ga. (WJBF) – It's been just over a year since McDuffie County school leaders broke ground on a state-of-the-art elementary school. Now they're working to finish construction in time for the upcoming school year. At last year's groundbreaking, school leaders were expecting to finish construction on the new J.A. Maxwell Elementary School this week. But, this week also marks 8 months since Hurricane Helene hit our area, which put a pause on this $36 million project. The hurricane, along with snow storms during the winter months, pushed back construction by two weeks. Despite the minor setback, the project is back on schedule. 'Right now, we're probably at 95 to 98% complete. We should be finishing up soon. We'll have a fire marshal inspection on June 13th, which we hope will get a temporary CO so we can start getting furniture moved in,' said Director of Administrative Services, Neal Tam. Work crews have been on the grounds the last several months getting the structure built. With most of the outside complete, the last phase is getting the inside in top notch shape. 'You're going to have high efficiency HVAC systems, you're going to have state-of-the-art LED lights—and all of that saves energy for us as residents and taxpayers,' Tam said. Superintendent Dr. Mychele Rhodes says there's other key features for the new school that will set itself apart from others in the county. 'This school will have an outdoor classroom area at the front of the school, we have a track for our Pre-Kindergarten students to ride their tricycles. This school also has 4 STEM labs, and that is going to be a huge part of instruction here on a daily basis,' said Rhodes. She says it will also be easy to access for parents. 'We'll have a Pre-Kindergarten entrance that is separate for our smaller students, we have a car rider entrance for our K through 3, and we'll also have our bus rider entrance. The design of this school will allow for easy flow of traffic off of the Thomson Bypass, and it also allows our buses to enter the rear of this school from our current middle school—which also eliminates some traffic on the Bypass and White Oak Road,' Rhodes said. Rhodes also served in various roles for Maxwell Elementary nearly 20 years ago. She couldn't be more excited for the school's future. 'It's just going to be something that the children in this community will enjoy for many years to come, and it's going to provide a state-of-the-art education for our children,' said Rhodes. Rhodes says after a few more finishing touches, she expects construction to finish by the end of June, and will open the school just in time for the 2025-26 school year. 'We are right now planning to have teachers in in the next couple of weeks, because it's important to our district that the faculty and staff of this school see their building first. Then after we begin the move-in process in mid-June, we will be announcing a community ribbon cutting—but that has not been scheduled yet,' Rhodes added. The new J.A. Maxwell Elementary School will hold approximately 740 students from Pre-K through 3rd grade, and will combine students from the current Maxwell Elementary school and Thomson Elementary. Trenton native participates in Fleet Week
NEW YORK (WJBF) — Fleet Week is underway in New York. The public can tour military ships and watch demonstrations. A Trenton native serving aboard the USS New York is there. 'We literally have one stoplight down there, sir. A Dollar General. We just got our gas station backing up, running,' Seaman Mackquez Holmes said. From one stoplight to Fleet Week in New York City, Seaman Mackquez Holmes is living a dream rooted in legacy and choice. A Strom Thurmond grad, Holmes serves aboard USS New York. 'My dad was in the military. He's also was the same exact rate, Boatswain's Mate, everything like that. So, it was pretty big for me,' he recalled. Now he's front and center piping in the Secretary of the Navy. 'Everybody likes to call it a whistle. It's not a whistle, it's a pipe,' he shared. 'I was able to pipe the Admiral and the Secretary of the Navy at his dinner. So that was probably definitely the best memorable time for me. Maybe probably since I've been in the Navy, honestly.' That pride built on work, long days, tough balance and growth. It gave me more responsibility,' Seaman Holmes said. 'I look at a lot of stuff differently. You have to adjust — not just to the military, but at home too. It's hard, but it's good. There's nothing easy about it. I can tell you that.' Still, he makes time for joy. 'I definitely like to fish. And I love to eat — I'm a big guy, man. Very big. I love working out. I love sports to death. I'm a sports guy. Big sports guy,' he shared. He keeps family close. No matter where the sea takes him. 'Everybody knows back at home. My grandmother don't play about me, man.,' Holmes said laughing. And for others thinking about the service, he's clear. 'If you guys want to join the Navy—for my younger people out there—join it. It changes your life, literally in a blink, a snap, everything you can think of. I'm here today in New York City, literally celebrating Memorial Day and Fleet Week right now. I've been in for three years, having a great time. Don't regret it at all.' RCSO: Man wanted for Rape, Aggravated Assault
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – The Richmond County Sheriff's Office said its investigators are looking for man wanted in reference to a rape and aggravated assault. According to police, 46-year-old Leland Tyrone Candidate is wanted in connection to an incident that took place on Tuesday, May 27 at the 400 block of Greene Street. Candidate was reportedly last seen operating a 2006 gold Nissan Murano with the South Carolina tag 137BTU.
