‘Unsung' pioneering actress and director Esme Church honoured with blue plaque

The recognition in Bradford, where she ran the Northern Theatre School, will allow Esme Church to take her 'rightful place in the cultural memory of this country', Historic England said.
Born on 11 February 1893 in Marylebone, London, she trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Rada before making her stage debut in the 1920s, and later joining the Old Vic Company.

She performed major Shakespearean roles such as Lady Macbeth and Gertrude, Hamlet's mother, and led the Old Vic's drama school from 1936.
Her career as a director began in the 1930s when she became artistic director of the Greyhound Theatre in Croydon, before moving on to Bradford Civic Playhouse where she took up the same role during the 1940s and 1950s.
There, she championed regional theatre, established the Northern Theatre School, and mentored The Omen actress Whitelaw, who won a film Bafta in 1969 for best supporting actress for her roles in thriller Twisted Nerve and comedy Charlie Bubbles, along with two Bafta TV gongs.
Other actors such as Dorothy L Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey star Edward Petherbridge, Secret Army actor Bernard Hepton and theatre actor Sir Robert Stephens, Dame Maggie Smith's former husband, were also among those mentored by Church.

Lord Neil Mendoza, chairman of Historic England, called Church a 'formidable force in British theatre' who was among the 'trailblazing women' who have 'not received the national recognition (they) deserve'.
He added: 'It is time that Esme Church takes her rightful place in the cultural memory of this country.'
The plaque, which will be unveiled on Friday at 26 Chapel Street, Little Germany, reads: 'Esme Church, 1893-1972, actress and director ran the Northern Theatre School here.'
Bruce Durham, the great-nephew of Church, said it is 'giving her the recognition that she deserves for all her contributions to the arts'.

He said: 'Growing up with Esme around, it was always wonderful to see and hear about her work – whether it was entertaining troops in France during the First World War, becoming the head of The Old Vic Theatre School, or travelling to and from New York.
'It's important that not only my great-aunt Esme is recognised but being able to use brilliant platforms such as Ancestry to uncover the many unsung women who made a significant impact during the early 20th century.'
Church's contribution comes as Bradford celebrates its year as UK City of Culture in 2025.
Si Cunningham, chairman of Bradford Civic Society, said: 'It's thrilling to see yet more national recognition for Bradford's pioneering, creative heritage.
'Esme Church is an incredibly deserving recipient of a national blue plaque, which perfectly complements the city's own growing blue plaque scheme.
'I hope this beautiful plaque, and Esme's fascinating story, inspires a new generation of creative Bradfordians to do great things for their city.'
Historic England and genealogy site Ancestry are calling on the public to uncover further inspiring women or girls from the 20th century, who may have been forgotten and deserve their place in history.
The eight-week public nomination period for the National Blue Plaque Scheme is open until July 10 2025.

EXCLUSIVE Stacey Solomon is the epitome of elegance in a plunging silk gown as she swaps heels for comfy slippers while filming on Lake Como

Stacey Solomon looked nothing short of sensational while filming on Lake Como in Italy on Monday. The TV personality, 35, who jetted to the idyllic location to shoot with her haircare brand Rehab, stunned in a cream silk gown. Stacey's dress fitted her gorgeous figure like a glove and boasted a plunging neckline as well as racy slits as she swapped heels for a pair of comfy white slippers. Sporting glam makeup she wore her high-lighted stresses in loose waves before sweeping them high on top her head after reaching the shore. Stacey appeared in great spirits while filming on the picturesque lake and sat at the back of the boat soaking up the sun and taking in the views. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. On Sunday she took to Instagram with snaps as she posed in a square neck white dress that showed off her tanned and toned legs amid the work trip. The mother-of-five documented herself strolling around the grounds and admiring all the jasmine flowers as well as the architecture. She then changed into a black and white ensemble as she filmed content on a boat, admitting it wasn't a task for the 'faint hearted'. Stacey's trip abroad comes after she suffered some heat recently when her followers turned on her over her ill-judged rant after losing out on a prize at the 2025 BAFTA Television Awards. However, while she congratulated the winners, Stacey couldn't help but reveal how 'gutted' she was for her team who 'deserved' the award as she declared that they were 'robbed'. Fans claimed Stacey is starting to 'show her true colours' compared to her usual wholesome demeanor and told the BBC presenter to 'grow up' and that she has 'got too big for her boots'. However not everyone agreed and others believed Stacey was being 'refreshingly honest' and was simply just 'disappointed for her team'. In the original video, Stacey fumed: 'We didn't win a BAFTA. And I know I'm supposed to take it gracefully like a champ but, I'll be honest, I'm devastated!. The TV persoanlity appeared in great spirits while filming on the picturesque lake, as she sat at the back of the boat soaking up the sun and taking in the views Stacey accessories her look with gold jewellery but forwent a necklace as she let the dress speak for itself She later swept her glossy locks on top her head after reaching the shore The camera crew were onboard to ensure they captured every moment However Stacey all pulled out her phone to grab snaps of the gorgeous coastline Laughing at her reaction, she continued: 'I'm not handling it very well, I'm not taking it very gracefully - I'm devastated! I'm devastated for our whole team, like I'm so gutted for our team. 'Everyone got dressed up and was really hopeful, I think because they work so hard. It's not an easy show to make, Sort Your Life Out and the team work so hard to make it happen and they so deserve the BAFTA. 'The Sort Your Life Out team deserved a BAFTA and I'm devastated. I'm not saying that everyone else didn't deserve their BAFTAs, they absolutely did. 'People think making TV is really easy and it's not, so everyone deserves recognition. But I'm just gutted for my whole Sort Your Life Out family because I feel like they deserved a BAFTA. I'm gonna say it - I'm gutted!'. Going on to reveal what it takes to make their show, she went on: 'We'll pack up a house and within seven days that house is packed up, into vans, over to a warehouse, laid out on the floor, we go through it meticulously, we make sure it doesn't just get chucked away. 'We donate, we recycle, we resell things. We put it all back and try and put it in systems to help families move forward...' She also gave a shout out to the families who give up their time and open their homes to TV audiences, especially when they run the risk of being judged. Stacey's trip abroad comes after she suffered some heat recently when her followers turned on her over her ill-judged rant after losing out on a prize at the 2025 BAFTA Television Awards However, while she congratulated the winners, Stacey couldn't help but reveal how 'gutted' she was for her team who 'deserved' the award as she declared that they were 'robbed' Professional organizer and Stacey's co-star Dilly Carter penned a somewhat more gracious message after losing out on the prize, noting that she was chuffed to even be nominated. Alongside a red carpet video, she said: 'Walking out, like we walked in, with our heads high and super proud of what we have achieved as a show, as a production. 'It's so easy in these moments to feel sad because we haven't won and forget about where we actually are. In a room full of incredible talent. But in the actual room. 'Some people dream of their show being nominated so for us to have been nominated twice is unreal. So let's celebrate the show and just how far it's come. It wasn't so long ago we were just filming a pilot. 'Huge congrats to @rylan and @robrinder. Thank you for all the love and support as always. Now let's get back to filming series 6.'

Harris Dickinson cast as 'iconic' lead in Pride and Prejudice adaptation

BAFTA-nominated actor Harris Dickinson will take on the role of Mr. Darcy as part of Audible's audio adaptation of Pride & Prejudice, as part of Jane Austen's 250th birthday celebrations Harris Dickinson, who reached heartthrob status after starring in Babygirl alongside Nicole Kidman, has officially been tapped to take on the iconic role of Jane Austen's Mr. Darcy. Fans of the rising star actor may be disappointed to learn, however, that the role is audio-only as part of Audible's audio adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Still, the project promises to be packed with incredible vocal performances as Dickinson is set to be in the booth alongside BAFTA-winning actress and Industry star Marisa Abela, who will portray the incomparable Elizabeth Bennet. ‌ The English-language cast also includes Glenn Close as Lady Catherine De Bourgh, Bill Nighy and Marianne Jean-Baptiste as Mr and Mrs Bennet, Jessie Buckley as Caroline Bingley, Toheeb Jimoh as Mr Bingley, and Sophie Wilde as Jane. Black Mirror alum Will Poulter is also cast as Mr Wickham. ‌ READ MORE: Emma Corrin and Olivia Colman to star in Netflix's new Pride and Prejudice series Dickinson shared that the project has been particularly rewarding. 'Playing Mr. Darcy was an amazing experience. I've always known him as this iconic character, but getting to really dive into the novel through this process gave me a whole new appreciation for him and the world. Being part of such a talented cast made it even better. It's a real privilege to be part of something so timeless." Audible's English-language adaptation of Pride and Prejudice will be released in the U.S., U.K., Canada, India and Australia on September 9, 2025. The release leads up to the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen's birthday (December 16, 1775). As stated in Audible's press release announcing the project, the adaptation will remain 'faithful to the original text' while also adding a 'unique interior perspective' from Elizabeth Bennet. Audible's Pride and Prejudice has been adapted from the original by award-winning writer Lulu Raczka and directed by Dionne Edwards, marking her audio drama directorial debut. Additionally, the English-language version will be followed up by local versions in Castilian Spanish, French, German, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese. The subsequent language versions will include 'local casts and release dates' according to Audible. ‌ News of this major production from Audible comes less than a month after the company announced it will offer publishers comprehensive AI production services to produce audiobooks. A shift that has been criticised by both voice actors and translators. The company shared in mid-May that it will work with publishers to produce audiobooks using its new 'fully integrated, end-to-end AI production technology '. Help us improve our content by completing the survey below. We'd love to hear from you! ‌ Voice actor Jade Asha recently shared her thoughts on Audible AI narration plan with The Mirror, saying that since the rise of AI, many of her work opportunities have 'almost disappeared'. But quality is at stake, according to Asha: 'We know that AI is lower in cost than hiring a voiceover artist, but it lacks in quality." Still, Asha says AI-generated voices are improving quickly and that the Audible announcement doesn't bode well for those in her industry. 'I can only see AI leading to less work for voiceover artists, which is already an over-saturated industry since the pandemic." Asha's story and the threat to voice actors and narrators is only one aspect of publishing that Audible's AI services will infiltrate. The company will also begin rolling out AI translation in beta later in 2025.
