‘GT's dropped catches awoke the dragon in Rohit Sharma,' says former India pacer; MI star admits being ‘lucky'
Rohit Sharma walked away with the Player of the Match award in a challenging IPL 2025 Eliminator match between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans in New Chandigarh on Friday after making the most of two early reprieves in his innings.
Dropped in the second over by GT pacer Gerald Coetzee off a top-edge flick down at deep backward square leg, Rohit won another lifeline in the next over when wicket-keeper Kusal Mendis spilled his rash swipe across the line. Cashing in on the chances, Rohit anchored MI to a blistering start alongside Jonny Bairstow before notching up his highest score of the season. Rohit holed out on 81 off 50 deliveries as MI posted 228 for five in an eventual 20-run victory.
Former India pacer Varun Aaron said the dropped catches helped Rohit find his groove again while swinging hard for maximums. 'After he got those couple of lives, it awoke the dragon in him. He was like, you know what, I am just going to go hell for leather and he batted really well. Especially that Sai Kishore over, those few sweeps he hit over square leg were just vintage Rohit Sharma. And if you are going to bowl short to Rohit Sharma, you should be praying to God. You can't bowl short to him,' Aaron told on ESPNcricinfo.
Despite striking four fifties this season, Rohit hasn't been at his flowing best with the bat and the former MI skipper admitted having found some luck through the innings against the Titans.
'I have got only four fifties. I would have definitely liked to score more. It was a good day for us as a team. I do understand the importance of playing this Eliminator, going through this and taking the next step forward. Really proud of a complete team effort,' said Rohit at the post-match presentation.
'To be honest, I have played those shots before in the tournament and unfortunately, I have found fielders. Somewhere down the line, you got to be lucky, and today was that day for me. I got lucky as those catches were dropped. But even after that, you got to play. I was focussing on keeping the momentum and tempo going,' he added after crossing 7000 IPL runs and 300 sixes during the knock.

RCB fans don't want MI in final? Netizens share 'cheating' controversies, umpire decisions & owner influence ahead of Qualifier 2
It's Qualifier 2! Table-toppers Punjab Kings (PBKS) are set to face five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) in a high-stakes showdown that will determine who earns the right to meet Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL 2024 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. MI arrive with serious momentum—eight wins in their last ten matches have transformed them into a formidable force. With a history of rising to the occasion, MI are no strangers to knockout success. PBKS will be wary of this ever-charging team and will hope to stop them to secure a place in the final. A 𝘾𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙨𝙖𝙡 Clash ❤️💙A 𝙂𝙞𝙜𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙘 Venue 🏟️And all to play for in #Qualifier2 🔥@PunjabKingsIPL 🆚 @mipaltan - Who will blink first? 🤔#TATAIPL | #PBKSvMI | #TheLastMile But while the cricketing world gears up for a blockbuster clash, RCB fans have made their feelings clear—they don't want MI in the final. And it's not just because Mumbai are tough competitors. The distrust runs deeper. Many in the RCB fanbase have pointed to past controversies and what they perceive as questionable decisions involving the MI camp—be it umpiring calls or broader issues of fairness with the influence of their owners. Here are some of the videos and incidents circulating that have RCB fans questioning MI's fair play in the IPL. R Ashwin's take on MI Chennai Super Kings (CSK) spinner R. Ashwin, in a video with journalist Vimal Kumar, pointed out that Mumbai Indians (MI) always seem to get lucky in crunch situations. Recalling a specific incident from the 2018 IPL season—when he was leading Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab)—Ashwin highlighted a moment that still baffles him. He shared, "I've seen one thing about Mumbai Indians—every single time, something happens. In 2018, I was leading Punjab against MI. They were 80-odd for five wickets in 13 overs. They weren't anywhere in the game. Suddenly, the floodlights lost power and we had a 20-minute break. When play resumed, Kieron Pollard went ballistic, and they ended up scoring around 180–200 runs." Ashwin added, "Of course, you earn your luck. But MI always gets lucky. We need to find out how they keep getting so lucky." One of the biggest indian cricketer saying this openly but they want us to believe all those ambani allegations are just social media memes.😹 The no-ball not given in 2019 In 2019, MI clinched a 6-run win in a nail-biting final-over thriller against RCB at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. However, the Rohit Sharma-led side's victory was overshadowed by a major umpiring blunder. With RCB needing 6 runs off the final ball, Lasith Malinga overstepped—but the umpire failed to call the no-ball. MI walked away with the win, but controversy erupted immediately after the match. A visibly furious Virat Kohli didn't hold back while slamming the officials. 'We are playing at IPL level, not club cricket... That's just a ridiculous call off the last ball. The umpires should have their eyes open—it was a no-ball by an inch. It's a completely different game altogether. So if it's a game of margins, I don't know what's happening. They should have been more sharp and more careful out there,' Kohli said during the post-match presentation. In an era of so much technology and with so much at stake NO BALLS should never ever be missed .... #JustSaying #IPL2019 Virat Kohli unhappy with umpire's decision vs MI During another controversial moment in IPL 2018, then RCB captain Virat Kohli was involved in a heated exchange with the umpires in a match against MI. In the penultimate over, Chris Woakes bowled a sharp delivery that beat Hardik Pandya, prompting a caught-behind appeal from wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock. The on-field umpire gave it out, but Pandya opted for a review. Replays showed a faint spike on UltraEdge, suggesting the ball had brushed the bat. However, the third umpire ruled there was no contact and overturned the decision, granting Pandya a lifeline. A frustrated Kohli protested the call, firmly believing the evidence confirmed an edge and that the original decision should have stood. The incident added to growing concerns over inconsistent umpiring in high-stakes matches. When Faf du Plessis recounted the MI vs RCB toss incident Before the SRH vs RCB clash in IPL 2024, then RCB captain Faf du Plessis was seen chatting with Pat Cummins, seemingly recounting the controversial toss from the MI-RCB match. In that incident, MI skipper Hardik Pandya flipped the coin so high that it landed behind everyone, prompting match referee Javagal Srinath to retrieve it. Du Plessis's animated conversation with Cummins quickly went viral on social media, with many fans convinced he was referencing the toss controversy. The moment further stoked ongoing discussions around the MI-RCB fixture and added to the sense of tension heading into another knockout match. Now, as MI prepare to face PBKS in Qualifier 2, RCB fans are hoping the Punjab franchise can halt Mumbai's charge—so that RCB, already in the final, might finally have a fair shot at lifting the IPL trophy and ushering in a new champion in 2025.

Desperate PBKS Star Yuzvendra Chahal 'Ready To Take Injections' To Play IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 vs MI
Will Yuzvendra Chahal play the all important IPL 2025 Qualifier 2? The star Punjab Kings spinner has been missing from action after he played a match against Rajasthan Royals on May 18. Since then, a finger injury has seen him missing from action. A rampant Mumbai Indians will present a stern test of character for a rattled Punjab Kings in a virtual semifinal when the two teams face off in Qualifier 2 of the Indian Premier League on Sunday. An eight-wicket hammering at the hands of Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a one-sided Qualifier 1 may have eroded some amount of confidence in Shreyas Iyer 's Punjab Kings, who are now in a do-or-die situation as they dream of winning a maiden IPL trophy. On the other hand, Mumbai Indians took another stride towards a potential sixth title with a comprehensive victory, which knocked out title favourites Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator. According to a report in TOI, quoting sources, Chahal is "ready to take injections" in order to play the Qualifier 2. History tells Mumbai Indians know their way around these lanes of IPL knockouts better than either of the other two teams left in the competition and that certainly tilt the scales in favour of Hardik Pandya 's side. But coach Mahela Jayawardene 's challenge would be to keep his troops organised which the former Sri Lankan captain has been able to do exceedingly well after taking over a side that finished at the bottom in the previous season. For the the Iyer- Ricky Ponting pair, the task would be to ensure their players put behind the crushing defeat in their last game and channel their energies to fight the fires that have erupted particularly in the bowling line-up, where Arshdeep Singh is carrying extra pressure. The absence of Marco Jansen and unavailability of IPL's highest-ever wicket-taker in Yuzvendra Chahal was evident when PBKS scrambled to find options to apply pressure on a spicy wicket in Mullanpur against RCB. But at the same time, PBKS camp could feel that that 'one bad day', collectively for their batters and especially in the knockouts, is now behind them and that it did not rob them of an opportunity to make the final. PBKS would also know the margin of error is getting leaner looking at how Rohit Sharma pulverised GT's bowling attack and set up the win for MI, riding on a couple of early lifelines to produce a match-winning knock. A holistic view would perhaps leave one without spotting any chink in Mumbai Indians' armour who have fired on all cylinders. They would continue to lean on their rich blend of Indian players including Rohit, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma and Pandya to come together. MI will also be particularly pleased with how their new recruits Jonny Bairstow and Richard Gleeson eased into the heat of the competition to deliver their bits, which at the end, proved vital in crushing GT on a batting-friendly pitch. After all, the outcome of the contest at the Narendra Modi Stadium could well be decided over how the two bowling attacks execute their plans since the surfaces here have regularly produced high-scoring games. Jasprit Bumrah's exploits and a clever deployment of the ace Indian bowler across the 20 overs have been one of MI's biggest strengths this season. While Bumrah's accuracy and guile has not allowed the batters to score runs off him easily, PBKS would also want to draw from their win over MI earlier this season when despite his measly returns, they were able to go over the line with seven wickets in hand. Suryakumar's unmatched consistency with the bat met with a sparkling knock from Tilak Varma against the Titans but for PBKS, it will be important to have their explosive opening pair of Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya finding their rhythm to set the tone. Teams (from): Mumbai Indians: Hardik Pandya (c), Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, Tilak Varma, Bevon Jacobs, Robin Minz (wk), Krishnan Shrijith (wk), Naman Dhir, Raj Bawa, Mitchell Santner, Jasprit Bumrah, Arjun Tendulkar, Ashwani Kumar, Reece Topley, Karn Sharma, Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, Satyanarayana Raju, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Raghu Sharma, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Richard Gleeson, Charith Asalanka. Punjab Kings: Shreyas Iyer (c), Nehal Wadhera, Vishnu Vinod (wk), Josh Inglis (wk), Harnoor Pannu, Pyla Avinash, Prabhsimran Singh (wk), Shashank Singh, Marcus Stoinis, Harpreet Brar, Azmatullah Omarzai, Priyansh Arya, Aaron Hardie, Musheer Khan, Suryansh Shedge, Mitch Owen, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, Vyshak Vijaykumar, Yash Thakur, Kuldeep Sen, Xavier Bartlett, Pravin Dubey, Kyle Jamieson. Mumbai Indians Questioned Over Star's Absence Ahead Of Qualifier 2: "Was Playing Well, Suddenly..."
Former India spinner Murali Kartik has questioned the absence of leggie Karn Sharma from Mumbai Indians' (MI) playing 12s during their IPL 2025 Eliminator clash against Gujarat Titans (GT). Karn, who has played six matches so far this season for MI, last played for the franchise on May 21 against Delhi Capitals (DC) during the league phase. On Friday, MI handed debuts to Jonny Bairstow and Richard Gleeson, but the latter is now unlikely to play against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Sunday's Qualifier 2 as the 37-year-old pulled his hamstring during the final over of the match. Speaking on Cricbuzz, Kartik questioned the inclusion of Gleeson in the first place, highlighting Karn's contribution so far this season. "The way Richard Gleeson clutched his hamstring in the final over, you don't know if he's fit. You don't know whether you'd play him or not. Karn Sharma was playing really good, but suddenly, you've begun to completely ignore him. Santner was sitting on the sidelines when Karn was playing, but now it's the opposite. It's very difficult to call," said Kartik. Kartik also suggested that pacer Deepak Chahar 's availability could come in handy for MI in their match against PBKS. Chahar missed the game against GT as he was struggling with an injury on his leg. "They would want Deepak Chahar to be fit. They can get the old combination and old formula back. I know Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks aren't there, but Bairstow has performed. If Chahar comes back, they can have more belief," he added. MI will be eyeing their seventh IPL final after 2010, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020, whereas the Shreyas Iyer -led side will be looking to enter the final for the second time after 2014. PBKS and MI have played 32 IPL matches against each other so far. MI have won 17 and PBKS 15. In IPL 2025, these teams have won one match each.
