Hundreds sign petition to save 1970's mosaic

Hundreds of people have signed a petition to save a 1970's mosaic in Grimsby.
It was installed in 1977 to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee but has been hidden from sight behind two former shops in Freshney Place.
Campaigners say it is now under threat because of the development of the shopping centre and cinema.
North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) has said it will assess whether it can be saved or whether it has been damaged beyond repair.
An NELC spokesperson told BBC Radio Humberside: "We are aware of the Jubilee mosaic in Freshney Place behind some of the units that are due to be demolished as part of the leisure scheme.
"Unfortunately, the bit that we don't know is whether the mosaic was damaged when the units were put up".
Hundreds of people have signed an online petition to save it, started by Mik Boon: "This mosaic was erected in 1977 and has been a symbol of our local heritage ever since".
"It is now in danger of being bulldozed down to make room for a cinema."
Kerry Henderson from the Grimsby, Cleethorpes and District Civic Society said: "It is important to the people of Grimsby that we have a bit of our heritage saved.
"A lot of punks used to come and have their photos taken beside it."
The council will assess if it can be saved when they get to that section of the Freshney Place leisure development scheme.

Teen airlifted to hospital after falling into water

A teenager has been airlifted to hospital after falling into the water at a North Yorkshire beauty spot. Yorkshire Ambulance Service said it was called to the incident at Richmond Falls, near Richmond, at 16:41 BST. Two air ambulances attended the scene and the male casualty was taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough at about 18:00, an ambulance service spokesperson confirmed. They did not provide an update on his condition. A series of rocky steps along the River Swale make up what is known as Richmond Falls, a popular spot with walkers and swimmers. The incident comes after a schoolgirl died after falling into a reservoir in Ripponden, West Yorkshire on Wednesday. On Saturday emergency services recovered the body of a girl who had entered the River Thames in Gravesend, Kent along with a boy on Friday. The boy was taken to hospital, where he remained in a stable condition as of Saturday afternoon. Edinburgh fire station with 'structural issues' could be demolished and re-built

Plans have been submitted to demolish and replace an Edinburgh fire station due to structural issues related to RAAC. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has submitted plans to the council which would see its Liberton station demolished and replaced with a two-storey building with additional modern operational requirements. It would also include office and sleeping accommodation to support the local area as well as a multi-purpose room for community use. The SFRS, in a design statement, said the station is "critical" to the delivery of operational response across Edinburgh and the wider area. The modern replacement would include individual rooms in place of dorms, decontamination spaces and additional equipment stores for specialist requirements. Plans also reveal how the building will consist of two elements - the appliance bay which houses the fire vehicles and the adjacent accommodation which is the administrative, preparation and deployment area for the station. The design statement adds how the current setup provides inefficient access between equipment storage and staff preparation areas for attending emergencies. They also say the current station provides challenges for contamination control, saying: "Cleaning and contamination control areas are accessed independent from the rest of building. Control should be more effectively managed within the same building. "Areas such as the dormitories and the gym in current design do not reflect present day norms for work conditions and safety. Individual bedrooms need to be provided and will result in an increase from 40 sqm to85 sqm. "A gym with adequate activity spaces for safe use of the equipment will increase in size to 60 sqm from 24 sqm. Likewise appropriate shower and changing facilities as well as purpose-built storage for equipment and administrative facilities will substantially increase the required building gross internal area from existing." Three men arrested and two injured in fight

Three men have been arrested after two others were injured during a fight in Sutton Bridge on Friday evening, Lincolnshire police said. The force said it was called just after 19:50 BST to reports of a fight on Bridge Road near the Curlew Centre, which then spread near to New Road. A man in his 20's was taken to hospital with injuries caused by a knife. Police said his condition was not believed to be life threatening. Three men, aged 20, 28 and 37, were arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and remain in custody. Ch Insp Richard Nethercott said: "I think the local community will be concerned when they hear the details of the incident last night. "I can reassure people that we have those involved in custody and our officers will be speaking to them over the course of the day and maybe longer." The force appealed for any witnesses to the incident to get in touch.
