Outgoing Cebu guv Garcia files electoral protest

Outgoing Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia has filed an election protest with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) challenging the results of Eleksyon 2025.
At a meeting with Cebu mayors on Tuesday, Garcia questioned the recently concluded May polls, saying the results of the Cebu gubernatorial race 'did not reflect the honest will of the people.'
'We filed an electoral protest,' said Garcia.
'We hope that the Comelec will act with dispatch on this electoral protest and we have, as a sign of good faith to all of you mayors, we have decided to contest all of the clustered precincts and that's over 4,100. Why? Because as I said, I truly believe that the results for the gubernatorial election here in Cebu did not reflect the honest will of the people,' she added.
Garcia, who served as Cebu governor from 2004, lost in the recent gubernatorial race, lagging behind closest rival Pam Baricuatro, who won with 1,107,728 votes. The outgoing official garnered 764,884 votes. Independent bet Valeriano Gingco garnered 33,545 votes.
Meanwhile, Garcia's running mate Glenn Soco won as Cebu vice-governor with 1,089,957 votes. His closes rival Joselito Rizal garnered 414,341 votes. — BM, GMA Integrated News

Comelec to proclaim BH party-list next week
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is set to proclaim Bagong Henerasyon (BH) party-list next week following the junking of the petition for disqualification filed against the group and its nominees. This developed after the poll body en banc issued a certificate of finality and entry of judgment on the disqualification case Thursday, saying it did not receive a restraining order on its decision that upheld the dismissal of the petition. ''Yun ay order certifying na final na ang decision ng en banc at ang tinatawag na entry of judgment. Ibig sabihin, wala kaming nakuha na restraining order mula sa Kataastaasang Hukuman,' poll chief George Erwin Garcia told reporters. (We issued that order certifying the en banc decision and entry of judgment is now final. This is because we did not receive any restraining order from the Supreme Court.) 'Hindi kami informed kung may finile na kaso and at this point, ang decision ng en banc ay executory. Asahan po ng lahat na we will be proclaiming BH any moment from now at kinakailangan na maibigay namin sa kanila ang tinatawag na of certificate of proclamation,' he said. (We were not informed if any case was filed and at this point, the decision is now executory. The public may expect BH partylist to be proclaimed at any moment as we need to issue a certificate of proclamation to them.) According to Comelec Resolution No. 9523 in relation to Section 13(b), Rule 18 and Section 3, Rule 37 of the 1993 Comelec Rules of Procedures, a decision or a resolution of the Comelec en Banc on special actions will be final and executory after five days upon the receipt of the said decision and resolution except if the Supreme Court (SC) issues a temporary restraining order or preliminary injunction. The Comelec en banc last week rejected a motion for reconsideration filed by petitioner Russel Stanley Geronimo and affirmed a May 22 decision of the Comelec First Division that rejected the disqualification case due to a procedural defect. Garcia said the partylist may be proclaimed at the Comelec office in Intramuros, Manila next week. To recall, the Comelec, sitting as the National Board of Canvassers, earlier postponed the proclamation of BH Party-list and Duterte Youth due to pending petitions filed against them. —LDF, GMA Integrated News

Letran's Vince Himzon played with injured finger in Final Four match vs. Mapua
By JUSTIN KENNETH CARANDANG,GMA Integrated News Not even injury could keep Colegio de San Juan de Letran's Vince Himzon from giving his all in their Final Four match against De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. Prior to the Knights' semis match against the Blazers, Himzon posted a photo of his finger wrapped with bandage as he was nursing an injury. "Medyo masakit pa po," Himzon told GMA Integrated News after their four-set win against the top-seeded Benilde. [It's still hurts a little.] The injury, however, did not deter him in this game. Himzon had 12 points, the second highest output for the team in terms of scoring following Bembem Bautista's 17 points. It was a good thing that he pushed through despite the pain he was experiencing then. "Nag-chat sa akin [si coach] sabi kumusta 'yung daliri mo? Sabi niya, ire-reserve niya ako sa Linggo. Sabi ko, 'di puwede coach, ilalaban ko na 'to. Nandito na eh," he said. [Coach said to me in a chat, how's your finger? He said he would reserve me for Sunday. I said, we can't, Coach, I'll fight through this. We're already here.] Himzon then vowed to give their all as they aim to reach the finals and topple the powerhouse from Taft Avenue.
