MBI scheme: Tan Sri arrested in Penang
PETALING JAYA: An individual bearing the title of 'Tan Sri' has been arrested on suspicion of acting as a proxy for the mastermind behind the Mobility Beyond Imagination (MBI) Ponzi scheme.
The 53-year-old Tan Sri was nabbed at around 2am by the side of a road in Penang, according to the New Straits Times, quoting a source.
Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) acting director Datuk Muhammed Hasbullah Ali, confirmed the arrest and stated that investigations are ongoing.
The man is believed to have assisted in money laundering activities involving proceeds from the MBI scheme.
'The man had just returned to Malaysia,' the source was quoted as saying.
The suspect is currently being held at Jinjang police central lockup, and police will be seeking a remand order against him.
This Tan Sri is the latest individual to be detained under Op Northern Star, an operation that commenced on April 18.
Previously, five individuals — including another 'Tan Sri' and a 'Datuk Seri' — were arrested under the same operation for their alleged involvement in a Ponzi scheme operating in a neighbouring country.
To date, assets worth RM3.51 billion have been seized and frozen. These include luxury vehicles, durian orchards, watches, bank accounts, and a hotel.
The founder of MBI Group International, Tedy Teow, dubbed 'Jho Low 2', has been implicated in various fraudulent schemes and is wanted by authorities in Malaysia, China, and Thailand.
Teow is currently in custody in China, having been extradited there after his arrest in Thailand in 2024.
He is believed to have defrauded two million individuals in China, convincing them to invest billions in his scheme.

Activist Fahmi Reza claims he was barred from leaving the country
KUALA LUMPUR: Activist and graphic artist Fahmi Reza claims he was prevented from leaving the country this morning after immigration officers at KLIA informed him that he had been blacklisted. "Today, on my birthday and Hari Raya Aidiladha, I found out I've been blacklisted and barred from leaving the country," he said in a Facebook post earlier today. In his post, he detailed plans for a short two-day trip to Singapore to attend a show featuring two of his favourite punk bands. Fahmi said he arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) around 7.30am to catch a 9.35am flight and proceeded to the international immigration clearance counter, where he was directed to the immigration office. He said the officer asked for his travel documents and destination, then requested printed copies of his boarding pass and flight ticket. Despite showing digital versions on his phone, Fahmi claimed he was instructed to print physical copies himself, even though the office was equipped with a printer. With just minutes left before boarding, an airport staff member assisted him by driving him to a nearby hotel to print the required documents. Upon returning to the immigration office, Fahmi said he was informed that he had not been granted clearance to leave the country. According to him, the officer said that Bukit Aman had not approved his departure but did not provide any further explanation. He was then escorted out of the departure area. The New Straits Times has reached out to the police for comment.

THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed late last night (June 3) of having seized assets worth RM143 mil from a 'Tan Sri highway concessionaire in the Klang Valley' linked to the misuse of sukuk funds during an operation conducted last week. The seizures include 14 individual accounts totalling RM4.5 mil, eight company accounts totalling RM33 mil, luxury condominium and land worth RM24.5 mil, nine cars worth RM7.65 mil and 13 cars that have yet to be handed over to the investigation team, according to the graft buster's chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki. Other items seized include luxury watches worth RM25 mil, handbags (RM3 mil), jewellery and diamonds (RM6 million), four horses (RM400,000), alcoholic beverages (RM3 mil), foreign assets worth more than RM15 million and around RM20 mil in gambling activities. 'The RM1.67 bil highway project also failed to be completed according to schedule and investigations are focused on bribes worth RM12 mil paid to certain parties as inducement in facilitating the cash flow out and back to the suspect. 'Proceeds of the embezzled funds were believed to be used in money laundering activities.' Tan Sri suspect currently hospitalised Azam further stated that the parties involved were believed to have used professionals such as auditors, financial experts, engineers and shell companies as recipients of the money in a layered manner to embezzle the funds. 'Until now, the MACC has yet to take the Tan Sri's statement as he is still warded in a private hospital whereby the investigating officer will seek confirmation today (June 3) from the doctor on the Tan Sri's health status before recording his statement,' he revealed. 'Meanwhile, the number of witness statements stands at 45 whereby those whose statements had been previously recorded have been called back to provide further evidence.' Meanwhile, Azam also explained that the investigation team is also tracking down luxury vehicles and properties belonging to the Tan Sri, both domestically and abroad, including in London and Switzerland. Additionally, he said current investigation is also focused on the true value of luxury alcoholic beverages in the Tan Sri's possession with the possibility that the money has been transferred to other accounts. At the same time, a property declaration notice has also been served on the Tan Sri and other related parties. – June 4, 2025 Images: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)
