Volunteers join forces to clean up Fremont Square Park in downtown Stockton

Yahoo10-02-2025

Nearly three dozen volunteers gave up part of their weekend to participate in the cleanup and beautification of Fremont Square Park in downtown Stockton.
The effort was a part of the Stockton Clean City Initiative in partnership with CalTrans' Clean California. The volunteers removed litter, planted new trees and painted at the park while Caltrans provided the materials.
The next event is scheduled for March 15 at Long Park, 4535 Woodchase Lane, one of several planned this year, according to the city. Visit the Clean City Initiative page on VolunteerMatch to volunteer at a future event. Those interested in holding a community cleanup or beautification event can contact the city to learn more.

Protesters stops eviction at Caltrans-owned home in El Sereno

Protesters in El Sereno stopped Los Angeles County deputies from evicting a 70-year-old man from a state-owned home that has remained vacant for decades. Benito Flores moved into the Caltrans-owned home during the pandemic. He's called himself a "reclaimer" of one of the more than 100 homes that've sat vacant for decades because of the failed 710 Freeway expansion. "I'm going to fight the eviction," he said. "Caltrans have 170 houses empty for 20 years, why? This is an absurdity." Before the pandemic, Flores had lived in his car for more than a decade and eventually seized the vacant home roughly five years ago. He formally moved into the house after signing a lease with the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles. However, the agreement ended two years ago. "I will die in the street because I have diabetes," Flores said. "I will die as a martyr to call attention around the housing program." Flores said HACLA violated the agreement by not providing him housing prior to the eviction notice. HACLA denied his claims. The city said they gave Flores referrals to multiple affordable housing sites and an emergency housing voucher, but he refused. Flores denied refusing the offers from HACLA. He said he'll resist arrest until the end. "I made a cabin in the top of the tree and I am going to go and wait for the sheriff there," he said. HACLA said it still wants to avoid locking out any of the so-called reclaimers, adding that it has offered financial settlements. Flores is still hopeful he'll be able to stay. "We have the right to live here," he said. "We have the right to purchase these properties under the Roberti Law."

Fix50 road work in Sacramento to take another year, Caltrans says

More traffic headaches are in store for drivers after Caltrans revealed that the Fix50 project's completion date has been pushed back for an entire year. The work was originally slated to be completed this summer. While being 85% done as of last May, Caltrans says the final expected completion date is now July 2026. Officials say equipment, weather, and crashes are the chief reasons for the delay. "Recently, for example, some structures for signs were needed to be installed, but they had to push back a couple of those signs because the crane that was needed was not available," said Sergio Ochoa Sanchez with Caltrans. New High Occupancy Vehicle lanes and pavement fixes from the Highway 50/Interstate 5 interchange to U.S. 50/Watt Avenue – a total of 14 miles of roadwork – are the project's primary objectives. Other major roadwork projects are also in various stages of completion around Sacramento area freeways, including the Interstate 80 pavement rehabilitation project and the Yolo 80 corridor improvement project.

Broken concrete on Richmond-San Rafael bridge prompts emergency repairs, traffic delays

Emergency roadwork on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge prompted a severe traffic alert Monday for both westbound and eastbound directions, which was expected to impact the afternoon commute, authorities said. Caltrans said in a social media post just after noon Monday that maintenance crews discovered concrete on a portion of the bridge's upper deck that was breaking up near the western end of the bridge. The discovery led Caltrans to close the No. 2 lane on the upper deck and the No. 2 and No. 3 lanes on the lower deck for repairs to the roadway. The No. 1 lane was to remain open in both directions. 🚨 Emergency Deck Repairs on I-580 Richmond-San Rafael Bridge 🛠️ Lanes 2 & 3 CLOSED EB & Lane 2 WB due to spalling concrete ✅ Lane 1 OPEN both directions 🕐 Expect delays – use alternate routes 📍 Near Pier #25 📲 Updates: @511SFBay | QuickMap: — Caltrans District 4 (@CaltransD4) June 2, 2025 Caltrans said the work to fix the roadway could take several hours to complete.
