Lepa Regatta in Sabah tourism calendar boosts Bajau culture promotion
SEMPORNA: The Lepa Regatta, a celebrated festival of Sabah's Bajau community, has gained significant traction after being listed in the state's official tourism calendar.
The event has successfully drawn more visitors, offering them a firsthand experience of the dazzling display of traditional boats and cultural performances.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor highlighted the festival's dual role in preserving Bajau heritage while promoting Sabah's maritime legacy globally.
'This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Regatta Lepa Semporna, reflecting the community's dedication to safeguarding their traditions. Its inclusion in the tourism calendar aims to elevate the event's profile and attract even more tourists,' he said.
His speech was delivered by State Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Seri Panglima Christina Liew during the closing ceremony at Padang Bandaran.
This year's festivities featured highlights such as the Lepa boat parade, Sambulayang flag-raising, the crowning of the Lepa Queen, and the Tokoh Regatta Lepa awards.
Another standout was the Igathon, a record-breaking one-hour Igal-Igal dance performance, now recognized by the Malaysia Book of Records.
Hajiji emphasized Sabah's cultural diversity as a key tourism draw, noting the state's 35 ethnic groups, each with distinct traditions.
'Preserving these cultural treasures enhances Sabah's appeal as a top destination for local and international travelers,' he added.

Hajiji also congratulated the organizers for the success of the Igalthon event, which featured a non-stop one-hour performance of the traditional Bajau dance, Igal-Igal, involving dancers from various cultural groups and communities. The performance on June 21 earned a place in the Malaysia Book of Records as the longest Igal-Igal dance performance. 'Preserving the cultural and ethnic heritage of this state is a key element that makes it a popular tourism product, as Sabah is rich in diverse ethnicities and traditions. 'The people of Sabah comprise 35 ethnic groups, each with its own unique culture, language, and celebrations, yet they live in harmony and mutual tolerance. 'This makes Sabah a top choice for tourists, both local and international,' he said. Revamped KLIA Aerotrain to resume service tomorrow, launched by PM Anwar
A long-standing icon of KLIA since 1998, the Aerotrain service has undergone a RM456 million overhaul to replace its ageing fleet and infrastructure. – Bernama photo PUTRAJAYA (June 30): After nearly 28 months of suspension, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is set to relaunch the fully modernised KLIA Aerotrain service tomorrow, marking a significant milestone in the country's airport transformation agenda. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to officiate the launch at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 (KLIA T1), where the upgraded automated people mover system will resume full operations at 10 am. A long-standing icon of KLIA since 1998, the Aerotrain service has undergone a RM456 million overhaul to replace its ageing fleet and infrastructure under MAHB's RM742 million Airport Regeneration Plan, aimed at future-proofing one of the region's busiest aviation hubs. Now equipped with state-of-the-art Alstom Innovia APM 300R trainsets, the system features three-car driverless units capable of transporting up to 270 passengers at speeds of 56 kilometres per hour. Hence the train journey between the main terminal and the satellite building is now reduced to under three minutes. Each train is fitted with advanced condition monitoring systems to reduce service disruptions, boost operational efficiency and enhance passenger safety and comfort — addressing past concerns over frequent breakdowns that plagued the ageing system. The new system underwent six months of rigorous testing and commissioning by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) between January and June 2025. MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani was reported as saying that extensive technical and safety tests were implemented to ensure fault-free operations. Originally slated for completion in March 2025, the project faced delays due to global supply chain issues, system integration challenges and the complexity of installing a new driverless system while keeping KLIA operational. KLIA T1 currently manages more than 100,000 passenger movements daily, with the Aerotrain playing a pivotal role in maintaining smooth connectivity, especially for international transfer passengers. The satellite terminal houses many long-haul international carriers, making fast terminal transfers essential in reducing missed connections and ensuring seamless passenger journeys. With the Aerotrain now back online, the airport is better positioned to cater to rising passenger volumes, especially in anticipation of Visit Malaysia 2026 and KLIA's projected recovery to pre-pandemic traffic levels. – Bernama

Brunei, Sarawak artists unite in cultural exchange
KUCHING: Artists from Brunei and Sarawak gathered for a cultural exchange, focussing on building stronger ties through visual art, poetry and creative workshops as part of the 'Neighbours in Heart, Friendship in Art' initiative, which concluded at the Borneo Cultures Museum, Sarawak on Thursday (June 29). Bruneian artist Wahab Hassan engaged 20 participants in a hands-on exploration of visual techniques through his painting workshop. The participants learned the concept of development, colour strategies and the use of palette knives for texture and fine detail, offering a valuable space for skills-sharing and artistic mentorship. Meanwhile, Bruneian poets Malek Metarsat and Adi Zain, and Sarawak's Angelina Bong, brought the emotional textures of Borneo's stories to life through a poetry session, reinforcing how language, like visual art, can transcend borders and deepen cultural empathy. The programme saw a public art talk, 'Lines of Growth: An Artist's Evolution', where panellists from both Brunei and Sarawak explored the personal and collective journeys of artistic practice. The talk featured Sebastian Jong, Angelina Bong, and Fook Liew from Sarawak, alongside Datuk Haini Hashim, Awang Sitai and Nicky Lapira, moderated by Osveanne Osman from Brunei. Sarawak's Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, and Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who officiated the programme launch, described the exchange as 'a cultural bridge that allows us to know our neighbours better', reflecting on Brunei's strong monthly visitor numbers and the potential for extending ties to Kalimantan Barat. The minister also emphasised the growing importance of integrating art and culture into tourism strategies, naming ongoing efforts such as the Borneo Games and artist-led initiatives as instrumental in shaping regional narratives. President of the Sarawak Artists Society Sebastian Jong noted that the event has been an enriching platform that fosters mutual appreciation and opens doors for deeper artistic exchange. Vice President of Brunei Art Forum Osman Muhammad shared similar sentiments, noting that the cultural exchange exceeded expectations, not only in turnout but in the substance of dialogue and the relationships formed between artistic communities. Bruneian artist Datuk Haini Hashim reflected on the broader meaning of the event. 'This was not just an exhibition – it was a reminder of how art connects people. It's through exchanges like this that we keep our traditions alive, adapt them and pass them on with renewed purpose,' he said. Sarawak-based artist Angelina Bong, on the other hand, added that to come together over shared passions, stories and visions has been truly powerful and she left feeling inspired and more connected.
