Cheezy's Grilled Cheeses creates vegan Chipotle Philly for Rockford Chef Contest
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — 21 restaurants are competing in the 2025 Vegan Chef Contest, offering vegan menu items for those in the community.
Co-organizer of the contest Shanasy Bratt said she began the challenge to bring more awareness of people's desire to eat more humanely and sustainably.
In 2024, 17 restaurants participated. Co-organizer Amy Belle said the growth of the competition in just one year is promising.
'There are a lot of returning restaurants that had a great time participating last year and wanted to challenge themselves to create new dishes again this year,' Belle said. 'There are new restaurants that our volunteers have gone around and recruited and let them know what was going on and they wanted to be a part of it, too.'
Cheezy's Grilled Cheeses on 11th Street is a returning competitor. Owner Dustin DiBenedetto said competing was no question, since the bread they use is Keto, gluten and vegan friendly.
'We have a great friend, Amy, who's really big into the vegan community that helped us out and got us involved in that,' DiBenedetto said. 'She had reached out and said 'Hey, would you like to get involved in the challenge?' We've always been able to incorporate vegan, gluten free, keto and we want to be able to give those options to everyone so everyone can eat.'
DiBenedetto said the restaurant even recreated its most popular menu item and made it vegan, so customers can expect to see a vegan Chipotle Philly on the menu.
'This is our number one seller, and we wanted to make it vegan,' DiBenedetto said. 'I'm hoping to take first place. We're grinding and we're making great sandwiches.'
Cheezy's sits in 4th place in the competition as of Sunday.
The runs until March 31.

LOVES PARK, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Italian restaurant Lino's celebrated the opening of its new Mercato by Lino's market in Loves Park Monday. The market, located next to Mercyhealth Sportscore Two, is made of shipping containers and features several local vendors. Loves Park Mayor Greg Jury said the Mercato by Lino's is just one of the latest developments in the city's booming business economy. 'It's bringing something that's unique, but it's also bringing an opportunity for businesses that don't have to invest in a brick and mortar building; they can start with this and see how it goes before they end up investing in that brick and mortar,' Jury said. Childcare deficit in northwest Illinois drives need for YMCA expansion
FREEPORT, Ill. (WTVO) — The YMCA of Northwest Illinois currently provides childcare services to over 100 children, and is planning to expand to a larger location to double that capacity. Stephanie Diehl, the executive director for youth development, says the need for caretakers in the area is dire. 'I believe when they collected data two years ago, they said we were short 1,200 slots in our region,' she said. 'We have a waiting list, especially with infants, toddlers and twos that exceeds over 60 kids. And we get calls every single day, for every single age group, with parents asking us if we have room for childcare,' Diehl added. The YMCA's 'Vision 2030' plan will move the organization from the campus of Highland College to a nearby facility. 'The vision includes creating a healthy living campus, which will serve as a community hub for childcare services, early childhood education, as well as health and wellness activities for Northwest Illinois residents,' Diehl explained. 'Creating a healthy living campus will allow the Y to expand its offerings, enhance the Y member experience, and allow for co-located partners to better serve the community.' She said reducing the deficit in childcare providers will not only impact kids and parents, but the entire community. 'I hear, employers, businesses, that can't hire their staff because their staff don't have childcare or their potential staff. The school district has talked about not being able to hire teachers because after they have a baby, to [be able to] return back after maternity leave, they don't have childcare for their kids,' Diehl said. 'One of the biggest things families look for is reliable childcare. And if there's not reliable childcare, then they don't relocate to our area.' Rockford-area homeowners aren't selling. Here's why:
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Winnebago, Boone, and Ogle counties' inventory of available homes reached an all-time low in April, with only 141 properties for sale. 'If we took every house currently on the market, the entire stock would sell out in less than 13days, that's how low inventory has reached,' said Conor Brown, CEO, Northwest Illinois Alliance of Realtors. The realty group said the low inventory could be traced back to the 2008 housing crisis, which reduced new home construction, which plummeted again during the COVID-19 pandemic and has yet to rebound. Among the reasons the agency cited: Current homeowners are locked into historic, pre-pandemic low interest rates on their mortgage loans and are unable or unwilling to move. Or, if they do, they're moving directly into a new home, resulting in no net gain to the number of available homes. According to the Bank of America, 60% of current homeowners and prospective buyers are hesitating about buying a new home, due to high interest rates on a new mortgage. According to FreddieMac, the average nationwide mortgage rate is 6.73%. 'More than eight in 10 homeowners had an interest rate lower than 6% as of the third quarter of 2024,' Brown said. 'More than half had a rate below 4%. Many current homeowners don't want to give up their 3% interest rate for 7%. That's helping keep a tight lid on the market. With homeowners staying put, that means fewer existing homes for sale and fewer choices for homebuyers.' Year-over-year housing sales volume increased for the 7th year in a row, with 311 properties sold in April, 7.2% more than the 290 sold last April. Realtors say 2025 could be the first time in four years that annual sales have risen if current trends continue, with 977 homes sold in the first four months of 2024, compared to the 1,071 sold in the same time frame this year. The average home in Rockford is selling in just 18 days, the agency said. , Rockford ranked as the hottest housing market in the U.S. in January 2025 according to . According to the report, homes in Rockford, which list for a median price of $242,000, spend just 43 days on the market, compared to the national average of 70. The national median listing price of a home is $424,900, according to the report. Last year, Rockford ranked as America's top housing market in a evaluation.
