Curiosity rover finds key ingredient for past life on Mars

New samples collected and analyzed by NASA's Curiosity rover are pushing researchers closer than ever to finding out if Mars was once truly capable of supporting life. According to a paper published on April 18 in Nature, ancient geologic samples indicate the Red Planet at one time featured a carbon cycle—an atmospheric condition that's necessary for sustaining liquid water on the Martian surface. Taken together with previous evidence pointing to the existence of dried rivers, lakes, and possibly even oceans, it's looking increasingly likely that Earth's neighbor featured at least some form of life in its distant past.
As with all of Curiosity's previous work, these latest discoveries come from inside the 96-mile-wide Gale Crater. Located about 4.5 degrees south of the Martian equator, Gale Crater formed following an asteroid or comet strike roughly 3.5 to 3.8 billion years ago. At one time, it likely hosted a large, beach-rimmed lake. Curiosity has traveled over 21 miles from its landing site since 2012, and has obtained multiple drill site samples from layers of Martian sediment beneath it. One of the mission's long term goals has been digging deep enough into the geological layers so that researchers can peer as far back into the planet's history as possible. Recently, Curiosity achieved just that at three sulfate-rich drill sites located on Gale Crater's Mount Sharp.
In those drill sites, Curiosity detected deposits containing an iron carbonate material called siderite. According to Ben Tutolo, a University of Calgary associate professor of Earth, Energy, and Environment Studies as well as a NASA Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover team, the data marks a major moment in the search for extraterrestrial life.
'The discovery of large carbon deposits in Gale Crater represents both a surprising and important breakthrough in our understanding of the geologic and atmospheric evolution of Mars,' Tutolo said in a statement. 'The abundance of highly soluble salts in these rocks and similar deposits mapped over much of Mars has been used as evidence of the 'great drying' of Mars during its dramatic shift from a warm and wet early Mars to its current, cold and dry state.'
Previously, experts learned the ancient Martian atmosphere was rich in carbon dioxide (CO2), but lacked enough evidence of sedimentary carbonate materials. These materials would suggest that Mars once included enough carbon dioxide in its atmosphere to support not just ice, but liquid water. This past era on the planet now seems far more likely, thanks to Curiosity's latest findings. Over time, however, solar wind and radiation likely siphoned away the Martian atmosphere, gradually thinning it to the point where carbon dioxide began transforming into rock.
'The broader implications are [that] the planet was habitable up until this time, but then, as the CO2 that had been warming the planet started to precipitate as siderite, it likely impacted Mars' ability to stay warm,' Tutolo explained.
Moving forward, the team hopes to further study additional sulfate-rich regions of Mars to reinforce their latest findings. Doing so will also help them gain a better understanding of the planet—and any past residents. In the meantime, exploring these Martian mechanisms can help scientists better understand similar processes here on Earth.
'The most remarkable thing about Earth is that it's habitable and it has been for at least four billion years. Something happened to Mars that didn't happen to Earth,' said Tutolo, before offering a word of caution:
'Studying the collapse of Mars' warm and wet early days also tells us that habitability is a very fragile thing.'

SpaceX has confirmed liftoff is now targeted for 1:24 a.m. The Space Force 45th Weather Squadron predicts a 75% chance of favorable conditions for launch. It also states a low chance for poor weather in the booster recover area, which will stationed east of Florida in the Atlantic Ocean. According to Space Launch Delta 45, the rocket will travel on an eastern trajectory upon liftoff. This is a rare occasion as Starlink launches typically fly southeast or northeast. No middle-of-the-night sonic booms will be heard on the Space Coast, as the rocket's first stage will land on a SpaceX drone ship stationed out on the Atlantic Ocean. When is the next Florida launch? Is there a launch today? Upcoming SpaceX, Axiom, ULA rocket launch schedule at Cape Canaveral Countdown Timer Update 12:41 a.m.: SpaceX has updated that the launch is now no earlier than 12:29 a.m. on June 3. No official reason has been provided for the scrub. Update 12:35 a.m.: May 30 marked the five year anniversary of the first time Falcon 9 launched NASA astronauts aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. The Demo-2 mission certified the Dragon to fly NASA astronauts, but the spacecraft and Falcon 9 rocket have since flown three private missions as well. Update 12:20 a.m.: On May 27, Starship launched again from Texas on its ninth test flight. While the ship (upper stage) made it further than the previous two flights, it ended up in a spin which caused it to break apart over the Indian Ocean. SpaceX had also hoped to test the deployment of a payload, which were mockup Starlink satellites, on this mission. The payload door failed to open correctly. One thing which went correctly was the high quality footage beamed via Starlink. SpaceX posted the following images to X. Tonight's Falcon 9 liftoff is set for 1:24 a.m. Update 12:05 a.m.: Starlink posted a customer photo of Starlink service at work out on the water. SpaceX Starlink internet boasts service almost anywhere the sky is visible. This includes places where cell phone service isn't available. Tonight, 23 more Starlink satellites will be launching from Cape Canaveral. Update 11:54 p.m.: The 45th Weather Squadron predicted a 75% chance of favorable weather. Calgary archeology program sheds light on province's pre-contact history

With a history spanning well over 10,000 years, Alberta is a prime location for those looking to uncover ancient ways of living. A Calgary archeology program is shedding some more light on that history while giving aspiring archeologists hands-on experience in the field. Running from May 15 to June 4, the program is a partnership between the university and the City of Calgary. Last year's field school took place in Nose Hill Park, while this year brought students to Edworthy Park in southwest Calgary. It's a great opportunity to both train students and educate the public about the long-term history of Calgary and Alberta, said Lindsay Amundsen-Meyer, assistant professor with the University of Calgary anthropology and archeology department. "This site actually has been known since the '70s. It's just never been excavated," she said of the Edworthy Park dig. "A big part of why we're doing it in park spaces is so we get the random dog walkers coming by, and we can talk to them about the history that's here," said Amundsen-Meyer. The findings have yet to be radiocarbon dated for a precise age, but according to Amundsen-Meyer, it's an Indigenous pre-contact site. "Right now we don't know how old this site is, but we do know that within the city of Calgary, there are sites that stretch back from the contact. Fort Calgary, all the way back eight, even nine thousand years … if we look at the province as a whole, we're talking 13,000 years or more." Many people going for walks in Edworthy Park might not realize the archeological significance of sites like this, or other sites across the province, which makes outreach a central part of the program. "That's older than Stonehenge, older than the pyramids, right? So there is a time depth here that I think is really important to understand," said Amundsen-Meyer. Findings at the site include bifaces (used as knives), choppers (designed to disarticulate carcasses), scrapers (meant to remove meat from hides) and other stone tools. They're fascinating, but nothing out of the ordinary for a site like this, she said. "Most of what we're finding is what we call lithics. And lithics are basically both stone tools and the garbage from making stone tools," she said. By giving students hand-on experience, they're joining the work force with a significant head start. "There's actually a labour market shortage in archeology and cultural resource management right now," said Amundsen-Meyer. "So we're feeding a lot of students straight into industry and straight into jobs. If we can train them better here, they're better prepared." Working with Indigenous partners is a central aspect of the program, with every dig being preceded by a ceremony and guidance from elders representing multiple First Nations communities playing a key role in shaping participants' understanding of Indigenous culture. "All of those pieces are showing how those descendant communities still have connections to this land, to this place and to sites like this," said Amundsen-Meyer. "I've had elders tell me more than once: you have to have truth before reconciliation," she said. "Part of that is definitely about residential schools, but I think part of it is also about educating people about the long term history of this place." Joining the University of Calgary archeology students at the Edworthy Park site are three Indigenous youth hired to work alongside the team and train as archeologists. "In my opinion, we shouldn't be doing archeology without connecting to those descendant communities," said Amundsen-Meyer. One of those young archeologists, Taren Crowchief of the Siksika Nation, is now in his fourth year with the program. "It helped me see my history and the past, and just everything about Alberta a lot differently ever since I started doing this," he said. His work with the program has helped him look at his people and ancestors in a new light. "I'd always be going through fields back at home on the reserve, and I wouldn't really think much of it. But now when I do go through it, I can't help but just look at every little thing, every little detail," he said. "It's honestly so amazing just to see things so differently."
