Reuters12-04-2025

April 12 - Seth Jarvis scored a goal and collected two assists Saturday afternoon in Raleigh N.C. in a 7-3 victory for the Carolina Hurricanes over the New York Rangers, who were eliminated from postseason contention.
The Hurricanes (47-27-5, 99 points) swept the four-game season series from the Rangers, who needed a win and a regulation loss by the Montreal Canadiens in Toronto to keep their faint playoff hopes alive. The Rangers (37-36-7, 81 points) fell to 4-8-1 in their past 13 games and will miss the playoffs for the first time since the 2021 season that was reduced to 56 games because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jarvis scored his ninth goal in his past 17 games and finished with three points for the sixth time this season.
Jayden Chatfield also scored in the first period for the Hurricanes, who were eliminated in six games in the second round last spring by the Rangers. Jackson Blake also scored and had an assist while Sebastian Aho collected a pair of assists.
Mark Jankowski also scored and William Carrier had an assist in his first game since Jan. 4. Jordan Staal netted Carolina's fifth goal early in the third before Jordan Martinook and Logan Stankoven scored empty-net goals.
Will Cuylle scored late in the second for New York. J.T. Miller scored on the power play and Adam Fox also tallied in a span of 2:55 in the third period for the Rangers.
Carolina's Pyotr Kochetkov made 28 saves. New York's Igor Shesterkin allowed five goals on 26 shots.
After there was not a stoppage for the first 11 minutes, the Hurricanes took the lead with 10:58 left in the first by moving the puck around the offensive zone unimpeded.
Dmitry Orlov got the puck from Jarvis and made a cross-ice pass to Chatfield at the right point. Chatfield scored when his shot sailed by Shesterkin, who was screened in front by Stankoven and New York defenseman Will Borgen
The Hurricanes took a 2-0 lead with 2:46 remaining when Aho made a backhanded pass from behind the net to Jarvis, who flipped the puck by Shesterkin from near the left hash marks.
Carolina took a three-goal lead 2:02 into the second when it spent over a minute in the offensive zone and Blake tapped the puck into the open right side of the net.
Jankowski scored with 7:01 left in the second when he was wide open in the slot, got a centering pass from behind the net by Carrier and lifted the puck over Shesterkin.

Non-League club ready to enjoy promotion after dark times

Stocksbridge Park Steels are ready to enjoy their return to the Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division after pushing through dark times. The Sheffield club have returned to the seventh tier for the first time since 2014, and volunteer Dave Bradley believes they will present a challenge to the established order. Steels won promotion on penalties in the play-off final, beating Dunston, having secured their place in the play-offs on the final day of the regular season. 'I keep watching videos,' Chapeltown resident Bradley said of their dramatic victory, 'I can't really put my finger on it, but it is a bit surreal at the moment, even after this whole time. 'We went through some dark times in 2013-15 and over Covid as well, so to get promoted and all the hard work that the volunteers do, it just rewards it. It is a magical feeling. 'When our former chairman Alan Bethell finished in his role, we had just been relegated, and volunteers had to pull together. 'We all needed to have a reset moment, and it was going so well, then Covid hit, and we almost had to reset again. Now, three or four years after Covid, we are back where we should be. 'There's been a lot of preparation going on behind the scenes at the moment, we are going out there to enjoy it. When you speak to the manager, he has said he wants to enjoy it. 'We are definitely not going to make the numbers up, we are definitely going to be up there. We just go quietly as we do and get on with it.' Bradley, who works as a warehouse manager for Lloyd & Jones, first got involved with Steels in the 2009-10 season. Since then, he has held a myriad number of roles, now serving as the canteen manager on game day. With 15 years of service under his belt, volunteering is something the 49-year-old encourages others to do, with opportunities available on the Pitching In Volunteer Hub. Through entering their postcode, individuals can locate volunteering opportunities at nearby clubs and discover more details about which roles are available. Bradley added: 'It's brilliant, you meet different people, people come and go, but most of them stop. 'But it's nice to see people on a Saturday, you get talking to the players and people, other fans and anybody else that pops along, it is really enjoyable, most of all this year. 'Volunteers will be even more important next season. We've just been talking about the fact that we need a few more volunteers helping and coming along. 'We have managed to get a few more, but we'll still need some more volunteers. It is massively important that we get these volunteers so we can keep the club going. 'It is about going out and going to see people and talk to people. If you have a crappy day at work you can get out and talk to people who are not in your usual friend group and you can talk to them about different things. 'There are a lot of positives in there and something you will only realise when you get further down the line.'

Ex-Hearts & Hibs defender hails Ibrox as 'noisiest' stadium

Demetri Mitchell, who currently plays for Exeter City, made the claim during an appearance on the 'From My Left' podcast. Read more: The 28-year-old, who played for both Tynecastle and Easter Road, said: "I've played in some big derbies like Hearts and Hibs. "I've played at Celtic Park. "I've played at Ibrox. "That's the noisiest stadium I've played in, Ibrox. "Bro, when the ball went out for a corner, my ears were ringing, ringing." Mitchell is not the first player to be impressed by the noise levels at the home of Rangers. Former Germany internationals Sami Khedira and Mario Gomez both recently praised Ibrox. Khedira, who won the World Cup with Germany in 2014, said: "For me, the most craziest experience ever was my first Champions League match. "We played Glasgow Rangers and it was such an amazing experience." Gomez, who won the Champions League with Bayern Munich, said: "I would say the Scottish fans like Celtic but to me I played against the Rangers and I will never forget this. "They've been really strong."

Cyriel Dessers ‘transfer fee revealed as new Rangers regime eye profit on striker'

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RANGERS are not willing to lose Cyriel Dessers for anything less than what they paid for him in 2023, it's being claimed. We told you earlier today how reports in Greece have suggested that AEK Athens have opened talks with the Light Blues over a possible deal for the striker. 2 Cyriel Dessers celebrates scoring against Fenerbahce Credit: PA 2 Russell Martin might have to replace the striker this summer Credit: PA Dessers was Gers' top goal-scorer last season, though, so they want to recoup a decent fee for their star striker. The 30-year-old Nigerian joined the club in a deal worth around £4.5million from Cremonese two years ago. He still has two years left on his current deal at Ibrox too. And the Daily Record claim Gers want to make a profit of at least £500,000 on the hitman as they're demanding a fee of £5m before allowing him to depart this summer. That would make him one of AEK Athens' most expensive signings, with Levia Garcia joining for a similar fee in 2020 and record arrival Orbelin Pineda snapped up for €6.5m (£5.47m) during the 2023/24 season. We told you last month how the Rangers were bracing themselves for bids for the striker. The Greek outfit haven't been the only club in for him, though, as several clubs were understood to be chasing him in January. His agent even revealed Dessers had offers from TEN different teams during the winter window, but he decided to stay at Ibrox. Since his arrival in Glasgow two years ago he's scored 51 goals for the club, finishing last season with a tally of 29 across competitions. Despite his impressive goal return, Dessers still manages to divide the Ibrox support with his displays. Rangers fans react to news Russell Martin is their new manager But his former manager Philippe Clement insists the forward doesn't deserve any of the abuse he receives from sections of the Gers support. He said: 'I think Cyriel gets abuse like nobody else in the club or on the pitch at least. 'But he always was there to work hard, to do everything for the club every day, every training, every game. 'Also, in his career, he never scored as many goals as he did at Rangers. 'In the end he performed really well with his qualities. 'I think he was top scorer at the end of the season. 'Of course fans always want more, but I think Cyriel, if he played in a team that won the league, then he would be for everybody a good player. 'But if you don't win the league then for the fans you are not a good player any more. 'That's life at Rangers.'
