It's not school's out for the summer, it's council is out. The last Barrie City Council meeting will be held Wednesday night.
It's not school's out for the summer — it's council is out. The last Barrie city council meeting before the summer break will be held Wednesday night.
Many items have been passed through the general committee and will finally be ratified in the evening. Among them, Barrie's south end Sports and Library Complex.
That project was only unveiled to the public two weeks ago. And just last week, council's general committee passed it as a single complex to service the Hewitt's and Salem areas along with several revisions, including a reduction in size to the library.
Council could also approve the schematic design of a proposed performing arts centre, setting aside nearly $500,000 for architects to refine the project's scope and improve projections for construction costs. As things stand, the price tag is about $65 million.
'It can be used for convention space, it can be used for world-class arts performances. This is going to be a huge draw for downtown Barrie and a huge anchor for the City of Barrie.' Said Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall. 'If you can think about the amount of folks that will be able to have weddings there and really enjoy our city centre right on the waterfront bridging it into our downtown it's, I think, a huge piece for the city we've been missing for a long time.'
We just saw thousands make their way downtown for the Troubadour Festival concert series. Nuttall thinks a world-class performing arts centre could bring that type of talent regularly to Barrie and draw in the masses.
Some council committees are already underway Wednesday.
