Wichita homicide detective receives public service excellence award
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A large group of people gathered in the homicide section of the Wichita Police Department on Thursday morning to surprise one of the detectives.
When Detective Robert Chisholm walked in, he was greeted with applause, and the city manager told him that he had won the 2025 Excellence in Public Service Award.
In addition to the city manager, mayor, district attorney, chief of police, coworkers, and Chisholm's family were part of the celebration.
'The award is incredible. The biggest part to me is it brought my whole family together,' he said. 'I've, you know, children that live out of town, and to see them here, it's a wonderful thing.'
City Manager Robert Layton explained why Chisholm is being honored.
'Your history of service to this community, both through the department as well as Lord's Diner volunteer, Meals on Wheels, and other things you've done in the community, you were by far the best qualified person that we had this year and we had some great people nominated,' Layton said.

District Attorney Marc Bennett said he has worked with Chisholm since the detective joined the WPD homicide unit in 1992. He pointed out that it is rare for someone to stay in homicide for that long.
'That's unusual to have people dedicated to something like that kind of work, getting called out at all hours of the night, working difficult cases, and to be committed to that for … a lot of years. is remarkable,' he said. 'It's a testament to Rob and the people of the department.'
Bennett credited former homicide Lt. Ken Landwehr, who passed away in 2014, for helping to train Chisholm. Now, Chisholm is helping to lead the next generation of detectives.
'We're in the Landwehr conference room here,' Bennett said. 'Kenny's kind of all over this place, and Rob's one of the folks who spent a lot of time with Kenny, and I think that also speaks to why we have such a tremendous homicide unit. You learn from the best, and he's continued to stick around and hand that knowledge off to the next generation.'
Chief Joe Sullivan agreed that Chisholm is a valuable member of the team.
'Since the moment I arrived here, I've been extremely impressed with homicide and certainly you in particular,' he said. 'Because of you and the hard work that you do with the rest of the team, it certainly explains why we have one of the highest homicide clearance rates in the country.'
Chisholm said his faith has helped him throughout his career.
'You have to have that with the work we do,' he said. 'I think you have to have a strong faith base of some sort. I have a strong support group … early on it was with the officers I worked with, the supervision I had, Ken Landwehr when I first came to homicide, and the supervisors I've had since then have done a great job making sure that we know that, as important as this job is, you keep your health first, your family first, and then you put everything you can into the work.'
He said his family is a tremendous support.
'My wife's never known anything but. I was doing this when I met her, so she's always been supportive, even when it's not been easy,' Chisholm said. 'And the kids, this is what they've known their whole life is me going to work in the middle of the night or not being there when they woke up, not being there when they came home from school, and once again have just been very supportive.'
The Excellence in Public Service Award recognizes employees from Wichita Public Schools, the City of Wichita, and Sedgwick County who demonstrate a strong work ethic, high performance, and a commitment to community. Udall neighbors rattled after park restrooms set on fire — twice
UDALL, Kan. (KSNW) — You could smell it before you saw it — the charred remains of the city park restrooms, torched and melted from the inside out. Udall Police Chief Erik King is calling it arson and says it's unlike anything he's dealt with in town before. The damage is estimated at around $10,000. Loose tire injures two highway cyclists near Atwood 'This is where the trash can was right here in this corner,' King told KSN. 'Melted the alarms, melted the drains, melted the light switches.' Police say it happened Thursday around 4:30 in the afternoon. Then, just hours later, it happened again. 'The same person returned and, at about 8:40 at night, lit the boy's bathroom on fire, and that caused significant damage,' King said. 'It was on fire for 20 minutes before the alarm company notified us.' He says the timing couldn't be worse, with the Fourth of July just around the corner. Neighbors say the smoke drew their attention before they knew what was happening. 'I was doing yardwork and I had the boys, and a lady from out of town came up to the fence and asked if I had seen a person walking around,' said Skylar Kistler, who lives next to the park. That's when she noticed the smoke coming from the bathroom. 'It kind of made us, I guess, feel protective, like a little more protective, like kind of upset that anybody would do that,' she said. Her husband Tylor says the damage is personal. 'I've lived here my whole life, so it's kind of nice to have a park like this with a splashpad, and you know everything here for the boys right in our backyard, and it's just kind of bad. This is a good building, and it's terrible,' he said. Chief King says the person believed to be responsible has been arrested and is currently being held in juvenile detention. Loose tire injures two highway cyclists near Atwood
RAWLINS COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — A loose trailer tire slammed into two cyclists Friday afternoon along U.S. Highway 36, leaving both with serious injuries. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 2:20 p.m. on Friday as a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling on U.S. 36, towing a trailer. The trailer lost a front tire, which broke free and struck two 75-year-old cyclists riding on the shoulder. KDOT changes weekend closure plans for I-135 in Wichita Both cyclists, from Marion, were taken to the hospital with suspected serious injuries. The driver of the truck, a 54-year-old man from Granby, Montana, was not injured. Troopers noted the trailer had no tag. The crash is still under investigation. For more Kansas news, click here. Father disarmed son after deadly shooting
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Newly released court documents are shedding light on the case of a Wichita man charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of his pregnant girlfriend, 20-year-old Naomi Oglesby. Matthew Criscenzo, 19, was arrested at the scene on May 25 after officers found Oglesby shot in the head inside a home on South Laura Street. According to an affidavit made public this week, Criscenzo made multiple unsolicited statements to officers while in custody, saying he 'shot her,' 'didn't want her to go,' and 'didn't think [his] finger was on the trigger.' Here's how to report damage Oglesby, who was 37 weeks pregnant, was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead minutes after her baby girl was delivered via emergency C-section. The infant survived but suffered severe brain trauma from a lack of oxygen and remains in critical condition. Criscenzo's father was home at the time and called 911 after hearing a gunshot. He told police he found Naomi on the ground and Matthew holding a gun. He took the weapon away and placed it on the front porch before emergency responders arrived. Criscenzo appeared in court on May 29, where he was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery. He remains held in the Sedgwick County Jail on $500,000 bond.
