AP's pioneering energy-efficient bldg nearing completion
Visakhapatnam: It pays well to optimise and economise energy consumption, instead of ranting at authorities every time power charges are raised. The Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (APEPDCL) has come up with the first-of-its-kind energy-efficient building in Visakhapatnam that can slash power consumption by 50 per cent or even more, redefining architectural design and integrating innovation and sustainability. The Super Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) structure, built at Sagar Nagar in Visakhapatnam and targeted to save energy by at least 50 per cent compared to conventional buildings, is nearing completion.
Constructed in an area of 14,400-sq. ft by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) in collaboration with the APEPDCL and the Andhra Pradesh State Energy Conservation Mission (APSECM), the Rs.13 crore-project is backed by the BEE with a grant of Rs.5 crore. From windows that control sunlight and filter heat to cavity walls, false ceiling to air conditioners and ripple-AC-brick structure, several innovative features have been built into the innovative structure. The cavity walls include an eight-inch outer wall and four-inch inner wall. Between them there is a four-inch air gap. In addition, a 50-KW powered solar plant has been installed on the premises to ensure optimum utilisation of renewable energy. The project serves as a shining example of sustainable development in a big way. Chairman and Managing Director of the APEPDCL Prudhvi Tej Immadi emphasised, while talking to The Hans India, that the Super ECBC structure not just sets a new trend for energy-efficient development in the state, but also contributes significantly to the broader target of promoting sustainability and conserving the environment. An official from the APEPDCL shared with The Hans India that, considering that the architectural designs of the pioneering structure are not just innovative but also energy-efficient, there was scope for the building to bag an award in future.
The Super ECBC building plays a key role in mitigating environmental challenges and catering to rising energy demands. They aid in slashing energy consumption as well as emissions and contribute significantly to sustainability and resilience. Besides, the structure offers economic advantages through lower operating costs and enhanced property values.The APEPDCL has plans to utilise the two-floored structure to facilitate a host of training sessions for its employees spread over 11 districts under its jurisdiction.

Garden Reach inks pact with Norway firm, India to build its first polar research vehicle
Kolkata-based Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE), a Government of India undertaking, signed an MoU with Norwegian firm Kongsberg on Tuesday to co-design and build India's first-ever polar research vehicle (PRV) indigenously. The MoU was signed in Oslo in the presence of Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, who termed it 'a commitment to fostering scientific discovery, advancing India's capabilities in polar and ocean research, and contributing to global efforts to address pressing challenges like climate change.' 'Let this MoU signing be a beacon of hope and progress, signalling India's unwavering commitment to scientific advancement and sustainable development. Together, we are building not just a vessel but a legacy — a legacy of innovation, exploration and international cooperation that will inspire generations to come,' Sonowal said. A PRV is a ship which serves as a platform for research in the polar regions (areas surrounding the North and South Poles). It can also help scientists undertake research in the ocean realm. India currently operates three research base stations in the polar regions — Bharati and Maitri in Antarctica, and Himadri in the Arctic region — and had been planning to have its own PRV for a while now. In 2023, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju informed the Rajya Sabha that the country would have its first PRV within five years at an estimated cost of Rs. 2,600 crore. According to the Ministry, the MoU marks an important milestone for India's shipbuilding sector as it will receive design expertise for developing the PRV 'while taking into account the requirement of National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research, which will use it for research activities in the polar and southern ocean realms'. The PRV will be equipped with the latest scientific equipment, enabling researchers to explore the oceans' depths and study marine ecosystems, Sonowal said. It will be a testament to India's critical shipbuilding capabilities, boosting the Government's 'Make In India' initiative, he added. GRSE, which has built warships, survey and research vessels, will build the PRV in its yard in Kolkata. Meanwhile, Sonowal, who is on a five-day official visit to Norway and Denmark, also represented India in a ministerial meeting on the role of shipping in shaping the future. The meeting emphasised the need for the industry to seek out a stable, long-term, regulatory environment supporting inclusive and decarbonised ocean-based trade. Ministers from Brazil, Japan, UN, US, China and Norway also attended the meet. Underlining PM Narendra Modi's vision of SAGAR — Security and Growth for All in the Region — Sonowal said it 'leverages India's vast coastline, strategic location, and maritime heritage to drive economic prosperity, enhance regional security, and ensure sustainable development for all stakeholders'. 'This entails economic cooperation, capacity building, disaster management, information sharing and environmental stewardship. Upgrading from the SAGAR initiative, India's PM Narendra Modi ji announced MAHASAGAR — which is Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions, signalling further consolidation,' he added. Sonowal also held a roundtable meeting with Norwegian shipowners, and invited investment in India's maritime sector. Patna (Bihar) [India], June 3 (ANI): Janata Dal (United) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, on Tuesday, praised Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar after state cabinet reduced Value Added Tax (VAT) on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) from 29 per cent to just 4 per cent. In a post on X, Jha termed it a major boost for Bihar's aviation sector. 'The Bihar Cabinet has taken a landmark step by reducing VAT on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) from 29% to just 4%. For flights under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), the VAT rate remains unchanged at 1%. Heartfelt gratitude to CM Nitishumar Ji for this progressive decision, one that will encourage more airlines to operate in the state and make air travel more accessible and affordable,' Sanjay Jha said. 'This reform is expected to significantly boost the number of flights from Patna, Darbhanga, and Gayaji, enhancing Bihar's air connectivity and opening new avenues for tourism, trade, and growth,' the JD(U) MP said. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar chaired a high-level cabinet meeting on Tuesday and approved 47 key proposals, including large-scale infrastructure projects, new government job openings, and significant policy decisions. The Bihar Cabinet approved the creation of 4,858 new posts across various government departments to improve administrative efficiency and public service delivery. Among the major infrastructure decisions, a Rs 1,320 crore plan was approved for setting up a sewerage network project in Sasaram, Aurangabad, and Siwan. In addition, a Rs 328 crore water supply scheme received clearance for Ara, Siwan, and Sasaram cities, aiming to boost urban utility services. The cabinet also approved a new Bridge Maintenance Policy, which would ensure regular inspection, safety checks, and timely repairs of bridges across the state. In a move expected to improve air connectivity, the Value-Added Tax (VAT) on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) in Bihar was reduced from 29 per cent to 4 per cent. A proposal to build a dry dock in Dujra, Patna, was also approved. The facility will be used to repair aircraft, making it the first such unit in the region. In a significant step towards women's empowerment, the cabinet decided that 'Jeevika Didis' (members of the state's women's self-help groups) would prepare clothes for children at Anganwadi centres. The area of Phulwari Sharif, Danapur, and Khagol near the capital of Patna will be expanded, and many villages will become part of these cities. (ANI)
