How To Experience Chengdu Like A Local
Enjoy an authentic Chinese experience, Sichuan style.
Chengdu was known throughout ancient China as 'The Land of Abundance,' an exotic and fertile city surrounded by mountains where fruit and tea grew, pandas basked in the surrounding forests and the locals enjoyed a leisurely lifestyle.
Thousands of years later, Sichuan's capital city is one of the biggest in China. It remains a place of abundance: a lush, subtropical environment; rich historical sites; and fine cuisine. Most of all, Chengdu is known for its laid-back energy and the friendly locals who still live a slower-paced lifestyle. The citizens are famously hospitable and love to meet visitors.
Here are the best ways to interact with them while also having an authentic Chinese experience, Sichuan style.
Have a Five-Star stay at The Ritz-Carlton, Chengdu.
Visit the exquisite Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star The Ritz-Carlton, Chengdu for a luxurious experience close to all the most important sites in town. Unbelievable panoramic views of the city and surrounding mountains can be captured from almost every part of the 350-room hotel.
Don't miss out on the visual feast that is the opulent afternoon tea at the Ritz-Carlton's 25th-floor Lobby Lounge. Cakes and chocolates created in house in the form of flowers and mushrooms are served on a bed of fresh moss, resembling a tiny scene from a fairytale. Apart from the aesthetic value, this style of afternoon tea is an eco-friendly initiative of the Ritz-Carlton, using local ingredients and natural vegetation to reduce waste.
The residents at Chengdu Panda Research Base are unbearably cute.
Sichuan, known as the panda capital of the world, is home to some of the most renowned panda research and conservation centers of these native bears. The Chengdu Panda Research Base is only six miles from town and focuses on breeding the furry mammals. Beyond the famous white-and-black variety, visitors can also see and learn about red pandas here.
For a chance to spot a wild panda, take a trip further out to Wolong Nature Reserve, where visitors can hike among the bamboo in the animals' native habitat. Pandas are most active in the morning, so it's best to get there early.
Qingzhi hand creams are very popular these days.
Hand cream shop Qingzhi has developed a viral cult following. Stop by the soft green-colored store in the historic Kuan Zhai Alley that's devoted solely to the rich lotion. Qingzhi products have pleasant aromas in general, but the beautifully packaged, osmanthus-scented version made especially for Chengdu makes a trip worthwhile.
Mapo tofu is a classic Chengdu dish.
Sichuan is synonymous with its exquisite culinary traditions. Try some Chengdu classics such as the mapo tofu, dan dan noodles, kung pao chicken and Sichuan-style hot pot at places like The Ritz-Carlton, Chengdu's Li Xuan restaurant. But be warned: much of the food in Chengdu comes with a kick; the local chili oil is particularly strong.
If you aren't as confident in your tolerance of the eye-watering spices, ask for yours on the side. The hot pot is a great place for beginners to start, as you can choose your spice level and throw fresh vegetables, meat and seafood into the broth according to your taste.
Jing Bar really comes to life at night.
Jing Bar, a glam cocktail spot hidden away in the Four-Star Temple House, is a hip and modern take on a classic concept — much like the rest of the property. The retro-chic bar offers original drinks made from locally sourced ingredients (the T-Bone is made with Zhengshan tea) mixed to your liking. Once Jing's DJs are added to the mix, one of the hottest nightlife scenes in Chengdu comes to life. Reservations are recommended for this popular bar.
Renmin Park is a lovely green space, but its main attraction is the chance to see the Chengdu locals living their best lives. Depending on when you visit, you can catch people playing Sichuan-style mahjong— this version is a local, simplified style of the tile game — doing tai chi, writing calligraphy or simply chatting with friends. You'll also find bonsai gardens and teahouses, which are wonderful places to people-watch while sampling locally grown jasmine tea.
The Ritz-Carlton Spa is one of the finest facilities in the city.
There are reasons why The Ritz-Carlton, Chengdu's spa is considered one of the finest facilities in the city. The 24,756-square-foot sanctuary has 10 treatment rooms, a lap pool, a steam room and other tension-melting amenities. Luxuriate in the hot tub while taking in the view of the skyline before indulging in a signature massage that uses oil infused with native Sichuan delicacies, white tea or jasmine.

Forbes Travel Guide's Best Hotel Bars For 2025
Hotel bars have become destinations in their own right. The finest examples are familiar yet transporting, offering a welcome respite for weary travelers, a launching pad for an exciting night out or the elegance of a perfectly crafted cocktail. The inaugural Forbes Travel Guide Star Bars for 2025 honors the world's most exceptional hotel bar experiences. A timeless icon such as Monaco's Le Bar Américain at the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo demonstrates daily why it's endured since the 1930s, with its jazzy ambiance and nightly music drawing illustrious fans from Josephine Baker to Lady Gaga. Then there are new favorites such as the BKK Social Club at the Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River's, which connects Asia with North and South America, showcasing Mexico-inspired drinks in a dazzling Art Nouveau space that evokes Buenos Aires. The inaugural list also includes sky bars—including SkyHigh on the 60th floor of the Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia and the Lounge & Bar on the 102nd floor of The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong—and old school drinking dens, like Rosewood London's Scarfes Bar, which draws from English caricaturist Gerald Scarfe's famous works, and Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa's Library by the Sea, a Grand Cayman hot spot that interprets literary works through creative cocktails. Forbes Travel Guide recognized 58 bars this year to celebrate its 1958 founding as Mobil Travel Guide. And FTG's expert, incognito inspectors visited each one, sampling cocktails on multiple visits. The winners were determined by data collected as part of FTG's 2024 and 2025 Star Ratings, based on several exacting standards. The top bars achieved the highest scores for their beverage program and presentation, as well as providing seamless service and an exceptional guest experience. FTG also focused on publicly accessible hotel bars. London rang up the most accolades with seven bars, followed by Paris with five and Dubai at four. When it comes to brands, Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts earned eight spots, and Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, St. Regis Hotels & Resorts and The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company tied with five winners each. 'These awards highlight sophisticated ambiance, elevated service, artfully curated wine lists and cocktails that are skillfully crafted and creatively presented," says Bastien Gardrat, Forbes Travel Guide's Global Spirits Ambassador. 'These are elements that come together to create an unforgettable hotel bar experience.' Where to drink in Jerez, the birthplace of Spanish sherry
This article was produced by National Geographic Traveller (UK). A pretty place with a jumble of Moorish-style courtyards, gothic churches and grand baroque buildings, the small Andalucian city of Jerez is largely untouched by gentrification and tourism — despite being only an hour from Seville. Yet it has a long-held reputation as the country's sherry capital: 'jerez' means 'sherry' in Spanish and the fortified wine has been made here for over 3,000 years. Once considered old fashioned, sherry has stepped back into the spotlight in recent years, popping up in cocktails and spritzes in bars globally, and Jerez is the ideal place to rediscover it. Locals work hard to preserve their traditions — and have a good time, too — whether it's at flamenco clubs, horse shows or lively sherry bars called tabancos. And with new direct flights from the UK launching this summer, the city is more accessible than ever. Tabanco & tapas tour Start your sherry education with Jerez native Aurora Muñoz, who runs Soleras y Criaderas. Her evening tours take travellers through the winding streets of the historic centre, stopping in different tabancos. As guests sample sherry and tapas, Aurora tells the story of the fortified wine, including how its production boomed in the 16th century after Sir Francis Drake stole 3,000 casks from neighbouring Cadiz and took them to England. The history of the tabancos themselves — originally drinking spots reserved for workers in the sherry-producing bodegas — is also explored. Alongside traditional bars, Aurora stops at places putting a modern spin on the sherry drinking experience, such as bottle-shop-meets-deli Mantequeria El Espartero. Las Banderillas All ages gather at this traditional tabanco, where the walls are covered in bullfighting paraphernalia. Grandparents perch on high stools waiting for plates of Iberico ham to be passed back to them, toddlers are put on the bar and young couples grab glasses of fino — the driest sherry — to swig standing in the street. While normally tabancos serve simple cold snacks alongside the sherry, people come here for the full kitchen and excellent tapas — don't miss the grilled octopus with garlicky potatoes. C. Caballeros, 12, 11403 Jerez de la Frontera Tabanco El Pasaje At Jerez's oldest tabanco — 100 this year — the sherry comes with a side of the city's other most famous export, flamenco. Three times a day (around 2pm, 7.30pm and 9.30pm), a silence falls upon this normally riotous bar, one soon filled with the distinct sounds of this Andalucian art form — strumming guitars, energetic stomping and emotive singing. Book one of the limited tables for a front-row seat or join the standing crowd at the back — there's a well-positioned mirror to enable those with an obstructed view to see. Restaurante Pedro Nolasco Best known for its famous Tio Pepe fino, the González Byass winery complex also houses this standout restaurant. Accessed via a private cobbled street enclosed by a canopy of vines, this minimalist ground-floor spot sits in an old wine cellar that opens up to a bright courtyard overlooking Jerez cathedral. Start with a refreshing fino spritz, made with dry sherry, sparkling water and elderflower. The dishes that follow are sherry-themed, such as sea bass with sherry vinegar, and melon infused with Tio Pepe, lime and honey. Bodegas Tradición This small-scale independent sherry producer offers informative tours with a tasting. After seeing the sherry-making process and cellars up close, the bodega's guide pulls up chairs in front of the barrels and serves up six key sherries. Taste from the driest (fino) to the sweetest (Pedro Ximénez), accompanied by an explanation of the processes that transform white grapes into these distinct flavours. The visit concludes with a tour of the owner's private art collection, which includes works by Goya, Velázquez and El Greco. Jerez's little airport is six miles north east of the city. New direct flights are available from May to October with Jet2 from Birmingham, Leeds Bradford and Manchester. Seville is also just an hour from Jerez by train and has year-round flight options from across the UK. Rooms at the world's first 'sherry hotel', Hotel Bodega Tio Pepe, start at €195 (£165) per night, B&B. Published in the June 2025 issue of National Geographic Traveller (UK).
