Government and EU urged to demand that Israel drop travel ban on Omar Barghouti
Filmmaker Ken Loach is among those who have signed an open letter calling on the Government and the EU to intervene against Israel's decision not to allow a renowned Palestinian human rights defender travel to Ireland.
Academics, politicians, and campaigners have condemned a de-facto travel ban being enforced by the Israeli government on Omar Barghouti, who is a Gandhi Peace Award recipient.
Mr Barghouti has been invited to speak at the Robert Tressell Festival in Dublin alongside US politician and activist Bernie Sanders.
The open letter states that Mr Barghouti has been 'a strong and serious advocate for peaceful forms of resistance to the regime of illegal occupation and apartheid in Palestine' and has 'always sought freedom, justice and equality, including the UN-stipulated, universal rights of refugees applying also to Palestinians'.

'Whether one agrees with the tactics of the boycott, disinvestment and sanctions (BDS) movement for Palestinian rights that he has co-founded or not is immaterial to the belief that he should be allowed to freely express his views, to freely travel and return to his country, and to be able to meet with other progressive politicians, activists and trade unionists, including at the Robert Tressell Festival in Dublin on May 24,' the letter states.
UN special rapporteur on human rights defenders Mary Lawlor has previously called on 'all EU states' including Ireland to challenge Israel's refusal to provide travel documents to the activist.
Signatories of the letter state:
We demand that his right to travel is respected and echo UNSR Lawlor's call on the Irish Government and wider EU to challenge Israel's refusal to respect his right to freedom of movement by renewing his travel document.
'We need to ensure this voice for peace with justice can be heard in person in Liberty Hall at the Robert Tressell Festival on Saturday, May 24.'
However, it adds that the denial of the right to travel is a much lesser crime than the many others currently being committed against the Palestinian people by the Israeli government.
The letter states that crimes Israel is committing against the Palestinian people are only possible with international complicity.
'Omar has been a leading voice speaking against that for years.
"All states who say they support human rights defenders should be calling for his freedom of movement to be respected.'

Thousands of demonstrators march through Rome to call for end to war in Gaza
Tens of thousands of people have marched through the streets of Rome in protest against the war in Gaza in a demonstration called by Italy's main opposition parties, who accuse the right-wing government of being too silent. Protesters held a banner reading 'Stop the massacre, stop complicity!' at the start of the march, which moved peacefully through the centre of Rome amid a massive display of rainbow, Palestinian and political party flags. The protest attracted a diverse crowd from across the country, including many families with children. Giorgia Meloni's government has been accused of a timid response on the issue (LaPresse via AP) According to organisers, up to 300,000 people participated in the rally organised by the leftist opposition to ask the government for a clear position on the conflict in Gaza. 'This is an an enormous popular response to say enough to the massacre of Palestinians and the crimes of (Israeli leader Benjamin) Netanyahu's government,' the leader of Italy's centre-left Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, told reporters at the march. 'There is another Italy that doesn't remain silent as the Meloni government does,' she said, referring to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Ms Meloni was recently pushed by the opposition to publicly condemn Mr Netanyahu's offensive in Gaza, but many observers considered her criticism too timid. The demo attracted a diverse crowd (AP) '(The Italian government) is not reacting despite an abnormal massacre, despite an absolutely cruel and inappropriate reaction. The (Italian) government remains silent,' said Nadin Unali, a Tunisian demonstrator at the march. Earlier this week, the Italian premier urged Israel to immediately halt its military campaign in Gaza, saying its attacks had grown disproportionately and should be brought to an end to protect civilians. Israel faces mounting international criticism for its offensive and pressure to let aid into Gaza during a humanitarian crisis. Gaza has been under an Israeli blockade for nearly three months, with experts warning that many of its two million residents are at high risk of famine. More than 50,000 Palestinians have been killed (LaPresse via AP) The war broke out on October 7 2023, when Hamas-led militants launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted 251 hostages. They are still holding 56 hostages, around a third of them believed to be alive. Since then, Israel has killed more than 54,000 Palestinians in its military campaign, primarily women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its figures.

Protest held in Dublin over lack of additional needs education provision
Scores of people have taken part in a demonstration in Dublin calling for action over a shortage of education provision for children with additional needs. It comes after a number of children with autism have not yet received an allocated school place. The Equality in Education protest assembled at the Garden of Remembrance, with many holding banners calling for equality in education provision. It comes after the group slept outside Leinster House in April to highlight the issue. A number of representatives from Opposition parties were in attendance. Sinn Fein president Mary-Lou McDonald said the children are being failed. 'These are children who have an equal right to a full education as any other child. They have parents who in many cases have written literally dozens of applications to various schools only to be told that their child cannot be accommodated,' she said. 'They have mounted a campaign which has seen them sleep outside the Dail … they're here today to simply say that no child should be left behind. Every single child is entitled, socially, morally and legally to an appropriate school place. 'The Government talk a lot about the needs of people with disabilities, they're talking about prioritising the needs of children, well, we're not seeing that here, what we see here are stressed-out, traumatised and very, very distressed parents, and children who are being failed comprehensively. That needs to change. 'Government is well aware of this issue.'
