Foreign Ministers Hail Morocco's Leadership in Advancing Atlantic African States Process
Foreign Ministers of several countries participating in the Atlantic African States Process (AASP) commended, on Thursday in Praia, the Kingdom of Morocco's consistent support and leadership in effectively advancing the AASP initiative and strengthening this framework for dialogue and cooperation.
In a statement to MAP on the sidelines of the 5th ministerial meeting of the AASP held in Cape Verde's capital, the ministers recalled that holding a ministerial meeting of the AASP alligns with the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to transform the African Atlantic space into a zone of peace, stability, and shared prosperity.
In this context, Cape Verde's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Regional Integration, José Fiomeno de Carvalho Dias, highlighted Morocco's unwavering support and the decisive role of the Process's permanent secretariat, based in Rabat, whose coordination has been essential to the progress of this initiative.
Cape Verde's top diplomat also reiterated his country's full readiness to continue working in a coordinated manner with all member states in favor of an Atlantic region of peace, prosperity, and shared development.
For his part, Gambia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad, Mamadou Tangara, affirmed that this 5th ministerial meeting illustrates Morocco's leadership and proves that this process "belongs to all of us," noting that the vision stems from the wisdom of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who has always advocated for the Atlantic space to be "a space of solidarity, peace, and prosperity."
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of São Tomé and Príncipe, Ilza Maria dos Santos Amado Vaz, described the meeting as "very positive" and reaffirmed her country's commitment to define and implement strategies based on political dialogue.
Ghana's Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, also praised the royal initiative as a suitable platform for strengthening cooperation among countries of the Atlantic space.
In this context, the minister called for intensified cooperation on security to address rising threats in the Atlantic area, including criminal and piracy activities.
In a similar statement, the Director General of the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation (AMCI), Mohamed Methqal, emphasized the importance of this ministerial meeting, as it serves to implement His Majesty the King's initiative promoting peace, shared prosperity, and the vitality of the Atlantic coast.
Methqal also stressed that the meeting led to the adoption of the first implementation report of the initiative since its launch, and formalized various recommendations made by several ministers, along with the scheduling of the next ministerial meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in September 2025.

King Mohammed VI to Perform Eid Al-Adha Prayer in Tetouan
Rabat – King Mohammed VI will lead the blessed Eid Al-Adha prayer on Saturday, 10th Dhu al-Hijjah 1446, equivalent to Saturday, June 7 this year, at the Hassan II Mosque Tetouan. The ceremony will be broadcast live on national radio and television starting at 11 a.m., according to a statement from the Ministry of the Royal Household, Protocol, and Chancellery. 'The Ministry of the Royal Household, Protocol, and Chancellery announces that King Mohammed VI, Amir Al Mouminine, may God assist Him, will perform the Eid Al-Adha prayer tomorrow, Saturday, the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah 1446 H, corresponding to June 7, 2025, at the Hassan II Mosque in the city of Tetouan,' the statement read. Eid Al-Adha , one of the most significant holidays in the Islamic calendar, honors Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. The occasion is observed with communal prayers, shared meals, and acts of charity. In Morocco, the celebration is marked by cultural traditions, with people wearing traditional attire like the 'jellaba' and 'balgha', while children are often gifted new clothes. On the morning of Eid, families gather at mosques or open prayer grounds known as 'musallas' to perform the Eid prayers together. Unfortunately for this year, the King announced the cancellation of the Eid Al-Adha sacrifice due to a combination of challenging circumstances. Minister of Islamic Affairs Ahmed Toufiq announced the news in a televised message and stressed that the announcement is in line with King Mohammed VI's directives. 'Our concern to enable you to observe this religious ritual in the best circumstances is accompanied by our duty to consider the climate and economic challenges facing our country, which have led to a significant disease in livestock numbers,' the monarch said in his directives. The country is facing a severe water shortage, compounded by the difficult conditions of livestock and a fragile agricultural season. These factors have made it infeasible to maintain the traditional practice of animal sacrifice, which prompted a hard decision aimed at preserving national resources and supporting long-term sustainability. Morocco has previously suspended Eid Al-Adha celebrations on three occasions during the reign of the late King Hassan II. The first was in 1963, when the sacrifice ritual was called off amid the Sand War with Algeria. The second instance occurred in 1981 due to a severe drought, and the third came in 1996, following consecutive years of scarce rainfall that culminated in a particularly dry 1995. Hajj: Saudi Arabia Launches World's Largest Cooling System for Pilgrims
Rabat – Saudi Arabia has announced the launch of the world's largest cooling system at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, where pilgrims are gathering to perform the Hajj pilgrimage. More than 1.4 million pilgrims have arrived in Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj, which kicked off today. Saudi authorities promised to take all necessary measures to ensure the success of the Hajj season amid scorching temperatures. The newly launched cooling system has a capacity of 155,000 refrigeration tonnes, The National reported on Tuesday. According to the report, the system is set to ensure that temperatures at the mosque remain between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius. These efforts are part of Saudi Arabia's 'comprehensive vision aimed at elevating the pilgrim experience and providing the highest levels of comfort and tranquility during ritual performance, especially given the potentially harsh weather conditions,' argued The National report. Last year, Saudi authorities announced the death of 1,3000 pilgrims due to temperatures that reached 50 degrees. The number included 20 Moroccans who died during the 2024 Hajj season. Morocco has a pilgrim quota of 34,000, with 22,400 pilgrims being monitored through official government channels and 11,600 through travel agencies. Moroccans paid at least $65,000 to perform the Hajj this season. King Mohammed VI last month addressed a message to Moroccan pilgrims, asking them to honor and represent Morocco's values. 'I therefore expect you to be ambassadors for your country and preserve this bright cultural image. Keep in mind that it is these incontrovertible values which have enabled our country to continue to enjoy security and stability, and to press ahead,' the King said.
