How Thailand has reinvented itself in 20 years, as popularity surges among tourists

I have travelled to Thailand several times since the early noughties – with family as a teenager in 2004-05, solo in my mid-20s and again with a partner a couple of years ago. Returning in May, I noticed how much the country has evolved. Its newfound sense of confidence almost mirrors the changes in my own life. And while the familiar sights are still there, the Southeast Asian country is presenting itself in fascinating new ways – and the world is watching. It is little surprise that Bangkok was the most visited city in 2024, according to the World Tourism Forum Institute, a reflection of the country's surging global appeal. While the capital was once synonymous with temples, street food and chaotic charm, today it is also a hub for contemporary art, luxury shopping and an increasingly refined dining scene. On my first trip to Bangkok, I remember visiting the Wat Pho temple complex, home to the city's famous giant reclining Buddha. My sisters and I posed for a photo alongside the gold-plated statue, making for a memorable keepsake. Years later, I returned with my partner, drawn to the city's lively night markets where we discovered unconventional street food and practised our bargaining skills. Although the experiences were vastly different, both offered a glimpse into Bangkok's vibrant personality. This is a city that is constantly shifting yet always compelling. Multilevel malls such as IconSiam and Siam Paragon now house everything from global luxury brands to Thai designer labels, while sky-high rooftop lounges offer a more luxurious feel. Restaurants such as R-Haan, Baan Tepa and Suhring, all with two Michelin stars, have helped solidify Bangkok's place on the global culinary map. One Bangkok is another example of this modern shift. I recently stayed at The Ritz-Carlton, Bangkok, one of the most impressive properties in this district. Spread across several city blocks, the mixed-use development has sleek skyscrapers, five-star hotels, restaurants, shops and landscaped green spaces. Throughout the area, a growing public art collection features works by both renowned Thai and international artists. Sculptures, digital installations, murals and even functional pieces like benches are built into the surroundings, encouraging people to pause, peruse and engage. It's a sign of how the capital is embracing the arts. The Dib Bangkok museum, which claims to be 'Thailand's first museum dedicated to international contemporary art,' is scheduled to open in December, proving the city's art scene shows no signs of slowing down. Those seeking a slower pace while on holiday, meanwhile, can look to Thailand's second-largest island Koh Samui, which is an hour's flight from Bangkok. Its tranquil beaches, lush hills and laid-back vibe offer a striking contrast to the capital's high energy. Recently, the island drew international attention as the filming location for the third season of the HBO show The White Lotus, and interest has continued to surge. Despite the buzz, Koh Samui also has quieter pockets brimming with charm. I stayed at the five-star property Vana Belle, a Luxury Collection Resort, Koh Samui, which is tucked away along the serene Chaweng Noi Beach. Live music performances, traditional fire shows and a private beach offer a strong sense of place with little need to leave the property. For those looking to explore beyond the resort, Central Samui in Chaweng is a short drive away. As the island's main shopping mall, it offers an air-conditioned break from the heat, plus international brands, cute cafes and souvenir shops. It's a different vibe from the bustling street markets of Bangkok, but it reflects Koh Samui's growing accessibility. For visitors craving a bit of city comfort without losing the island vibe, it strikes a good balance. Meanwhile, the nearby Bophut area comes alive in the evenings. While its traditional fishing village charm has largely faded in the face of more tourist-centric development, it still offers glimpses of Samui's heritage, while also showing the flipside of overtourism. It might be worth engaging the services of a local tour guide to get a more authentic feel for the area's history and heritage. Given the country's ever-changing landscape, Thailand continues to offer something new with each visit. It grows and shifts, shaped by tourism demand, modernisation and its own creative momentum. No matter how many times I return, the experience feels familiar yet somehow also new.

Dubai to reinforce collaborative approach to its tourism growth

The Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) hosted its first City Briefing of 2025, a key bi-annual stakeholder engagement platform that further reinforces Dubai's collaborative approach to tourism growth. Held at the Coca-Cola Arena, the briefing brought together more than 1,300 industry leaders and professionals from across the hospitality, aviation, retail and F&B sectors, along with representatives from government entities. Reflecting the UAE Year of Community's focus on building a connected society grounded in belonging and shared purpose, the briefing highlighted the critical role that partners across the public and private sectors are playing in Dubai's continued tourism performance. The event was more interactive than ever, with stakeholders providing insights and expertise that is poised to feed into DET's strategy and initiatives going forward, and further elevate the city's appeal to global leisure and business audiences. In the presence of Helal Saeed Almarri, Director-General of DET, the latest edition provided a comprehensive update on the city's tourism performance, campaigns, festivals and events, and strategic priorities for the year ahead. Issam Kazim, CEO of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DCTCM), said, 'Building on yet another record-breaking performance in 2024, the exceptional results achieved by the industry so far in 2025 is a testament to the resilience and steadfast support of our stakeholders and partners.' He added, 'In advancing the goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, our focus remains on strengthening the spirit of partnerships, embracing innovation, and creating future-ready experiences that enhance Dubai's position as the world's best city to visit, live and work in. 'As we look ahead to the second half of this year and beyond, we will harness the key elements that have driven the industry's steady growth - a robust and diversified market strategy, a solid collaboration model between the government and private sectors, and global campaigns showcasing the ever-evolving diverse destination offering.' Ahmed Al Khaja, CEO of Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), said, 'Dubai's vibrant calendar of festivals and events reflects our city's bold vision and boundless ambition - a testament to our commitment to innovation, excellence, and global leadership. These world-class experiences are not only a key driver of visitation but also vital to nurturing the pillars of our economy, from retail and hospitality to aviation and business events.' Key industry updates included Dubai welcoming 7.15 million international overnight visitors between January and April 2025, a 7 per cent YoY increase. This builds on the 18.72 million people who visited in 2024, the second consecutive year of record-setting growth for the city. The event highlighted key initiatives that reinforce Dubai's contribution to community, accessibility and sustainability. Central to these efforts is the city's achievement in becoming the first Certified Autism Destination in the Eastern Hemisphere. Under DET's leadership, in collaboration with the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), the initiative has already trained more than 70,000 individuals through the Dubai College of Tourism's autism and sensory awareness course. Meanwhile, over 300 hotels have actively engaged in the certification process to deliver accessible experiences to all visitors. Another significant project that was highlighted at the event was the launch of the 'MyDubai Communities' digital platform in April. It is designed to strengthen community bonds and promote the values of tolerance and coexistence, offering access to more than 100 interest-based communities. During the City Briefing, the new 'Dubai. That's How You Summer' campaign was presented, promoted across various media channels and told through the stories of a wide range of advocates. The campaign positions Dubai as a must-visit summer destination. Another major global campaign launched by DET in 2025 was 'Find Your Story', starring Millie Bobby Brown and Jake Bongiovi. In the captivating brand film, the story reveals the exciting adventures that travellers can enjoy in the city, even during a brief stopover, and highlights Dubai's desert landscapes and futuristic architecture. The return of Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) - the city's much-anticipated summer festival - was announced at the briefing. Taking place from 27th June to 31st August 2025, DSS will deliver a vibrant calendar of sales, prize draws, entertainment and cultural experiences for residents and visitors of all ages. This year's DSS will also be structured into three retail periods - Summer Holiday Offers, The Great Summer Sale, and Back to School - to drive consumer engagement and maintain momentum. WAM

Lebanon looks to visitors from Gulf as it pushes to increase tourism

Lebanon is looking forward to a boost in tourism from Gulf countries as its new leadership works to rebuild ties after years of estrangement. The UAE and Kuwait have lifted bans on their citizens travelling to Lebanon after recent visits by President Joseph Aoun, who has also travelled to Saudi Arabia and Qatar after taking office in January. 'Lebanon is moving in the right direction, getting back to the Arab fold – and that's a Lebanese demand before anything else,' Fouad Dandan, Lebanon's ambassador to the UAE, told The National. Gulf tourists and investors − particularly from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE − were significant contributors to the economy for decades before relations soured over the increasing influence of Iran over the country through Hezbollah. However, the Lebanese armed group and political party has been considerably weakened after a year-long war with Israel that led to them signing a peace deal last November. Preparations for an increase in arrivals are already under way, with an additional terminal to be built at Beirut's international airport. Plans for a new airport are also in the works, with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam announcing last month that the master plan would be unveiled shortly and the project thrown open to foreign investors. To be called the Rene Mouawad Airport, the new airport in Qlayaat 'could play a strategic role in facilitating cargo movement and affordable travel', Mr Salam told a conference in Beirut on Tuesday. At the same time, flag carrier Middle East Airlines is looking at setting up a low-cost carrier to serve destinations in the Middle East and Europe. The budget airline would be a wholly owned subsidiary of the wider MEA group but fully independent, Mohamad El Hout, chairman of MEA, told The National. He said MEA had seen 'significant growth in passenger traffic' this month, and was forecasting year-on-year growth of 10 per cent to 15 per cent in the second half of 2025. Given its history of conflict, Lebanon's security forces have also been rallied to encourage more foreign visitors. 'Preparations are under way to welcome tourists, though the state is working with a limited budget. Efforts have been made to improve visitors' experience. The road from the airport to Beirut has been repaired, and political banners and posters were removed months ago,' a senior security official involved in the operations told The National. 'What's new is the increased police presence near airport routes, especially at night. Police staffing has recently expanded to accommodate these new duties, and additional checkpoints are now active, with clear instructions to search suspicious vehicles and fine violators.' In the long run, drawing more visitors to its beaches, mountains and nightlife could play a key role in Lebanon's efforts to rebuild an economy hit by mismanagement, corruption and war, with the tourism sector estimated to account for 20 per cent of GDP. 'Eid Al Adha gives a glimpse of how this summer will look,' Jean Abboud, president of the Association of Travel and Tourist Agents in Lebanon, told The National. 'We're seeing new nationalities this year: Emiratis, Kuwaitis and Qataris. Gulf tourists tend to spend more time and money in the country. 'In May, airport traffic rose 11 per cent compared to the same period last year. The momentum is encouraging.'
