'Sels having the season of his life'

BBC News04-03-2025

A Nottingham Forest goalkeeping legend was anointed three years ago when Brice Samba sent the Reds through to the Championship play-off final in a penalty shootout. That mantle is now passed to Matz Sels, who saw Forest into the FA Cup quarter-finals on Monday with the winning penalty save against Ipswich Town.Admittedly, it is not the actual FA Cup final. But there is just one game separating the remaining eight clubs and a semi-final at Wembley. It is another remarkable step in the Reds' incredible journey this year - their eyes now on the business end of the campaign. Not a Nottingham Forest fan? Find and follow your team hereSels has been all-important to Nuno Espirito Santo's team this season. The Belgian keeper appeared to be a stop-gap replacement just over a year ago when he arrived from Strasbourg, but he has been at the heart of the club's success ever since. With 11 clean sheets in the Premier League - more than any other keeper - he, like most of this Forest side, is having the season of his life. His save percentage, goals prevented and almost every stat going is in the top three in the division, only bettered by Alisson and David Raya at the top two clubs.Nuno, a former keeper himself, has been able to build on the foundations that already existed on Trentside, but taken them to a level few imagined.Nobody wanted another FA Cup tie with extra time and penalties but the euphoria a cup run brings is worth the momentum alone.Forest's last FA Cup quarter-final was in that same promotion-winning season, ending in a narrow 1-0 defeat by Liverpool. Can the Reds go one step further?Another raucous atmosphere at the City Ground on Saturday against Manchester City could lift them even higher, with the bond between players, manager and fans clearly evident in Monday's post-match celebrations.Find more from Pat Riddell at The Famous Club, external

When does the first summer transfer window close before Club World Cup?

The first transfer window of the summer is set to come to close as teams face a race against time to get deals over the line ahead of the Club World Cup. This early-June mini window is a fresh alteration to summer transfer proceedings - an additional registration period created by Fifa which national associations could adopt if they had teams involved in the inaugural competition, which starts in the United States on June 14. The Premier League opted to take on the new window, allowing Manchester City and Chelsea to make signings before the start of the tournament. Both have been active in the 10-day period, with City having completed the signing of Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, while Chelsea have acquired Ipswich striker Liam Delap. And while numerous of other clubs have taken advantage of the window, with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United also completing transfers, teams have just a few hours left until the transfer window slams shut again. Here is everything you need to know about the pre-Club World Cup transfer deadline. When does the first summer transfer window close? The transfer window traditionally closes at 11pm BST, but an earlier deadline of 7pm has been put in place for the short window which shuts on Tuesday 10 June. The earlier deadline is intended to allow club and league officials to complete their work at more sociable hours rather than still be at their desks well beyond midnight. When does the summer transfer window reopen? The main summer transfer window will reopen on June 16 and runs until September 1, on which a deadline of 7pm will also be in place.

Partick Thistle sporting director suffers serious injury swimming in Mauritius

Partick Thistle sporting director Ian Barraclough is in hospital in Mauritius after suffering serious injury while on holiday. The Championship club has revealed that Barraclough has 'extensive injuries', including broken bones in his neck and back after what they say was a swimming accident. The 54-year-old underwent immediate surgery and is now in a period of recovery but will not be able to return to Scotland for several weeks. In a statement released on the club's website, Barraclough, who joined the club in April, said: 'On behalf of myself, my wife, my children and my wider family I would like to thank the surgeons and staff at the Wellkin Hospital, Mauritius for their exceptional care. 'I would also like to thank club chairman Richard Beastall and all of the team at Partick Thistle for their support and well wishes. 'In my short space of time I have already felt the close bond and drive from staff, players, fans and volunteers that make Thistle what it is.' 'I'm looking forward to returning as quickly as possible and get back to that unique and special feeling that really marks Thistle out as a football club with a passion to be different and an ambition to succeed.' 'It is one that I am very proud to be a part of.' Club chairman Richard Beastall said: 'It was a harrowing time for Ian and his family immediately after the accident however things are beginning to settle now. 'He suffered broken bones in both his neck and back but thankfully the speed in which he was operated on, and the care that was taken pre-operation, has helped the situation significantly.' 'Ian has only been at the club for a short time however he has impressed everyone with his professionalism and drive. Everyone at The Wyre Stadium at Firhill wishes Ian a quick and full recovery.' 'We have contingency measures in place to cope with his absence. These includes extra duties being carried out by our new head of recruitment, Lee Turnbull, who has now officially started, and others at the club. I thank everyone for rallying together.' Former Liverpool and Arsenal star to join Man City coaching staff for Club World Cup as he earns promotion to Pep Guardiola's senior side

Two-time Premier League winner Kolo Toure is joining Manchester City 's backroom staff for the Club World Cup. Toure, a coach with the club's Under-18 team under Oliver Reiss, is jetting off to the United States with Pep Guardiola 's squad on Thursday. City saw three of Guardiola's coaching team – Juanma Lillo, Carlos Vicens and Inigo Dominguez – depart the club at the end of the season and have moved quickly to find replacements. Pep Lijnders, Jurgen Klopp 's former No 2 at Liverpool, is in as Guardiola's assistant. Set-piece coach James French ended a 13-year stay at Liverpool to join as well. Toure sealed an Under 18s role last year and is popular among players. The 44-year-old won the league title with City in 2012, while it's not yet known if his promotion will become permanent. The appointments before the Club World Cup, and an alteration in how many players are going on the trip, means the backroom set-up will take on a different feel to what had been expected. The Under-21 boss Ben Wilkinson and his assistant Craig Mudd, both highly regarded in the academy, were believed to be helping the first team in separate fortnight stints across the tournament. But City have opted to largely take established stars, and a smaller squad with fewer youngsters than first envisaged, to America - meaning the two coaches will be left to organise their side's pre-season instead. City are expected to announce the squad, made up of around 25 players, on Wednesday. FIFA regulations allow teams to take more than 30.
