Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan Unavailable For Second India A vs England Lions match

India's newly appointed Test captain Shubman Gill will not feature in the second unofficial Test between India A and England Lions, set to begin on June 6 in Northampton. Although the BCCI had earlier announced that Gill and his Gujarat Titans opening partner B Sai Sudharsan would join the India A squad ahead of the match. However, both players will now travel directly with the senior Test squad, which arrives in England on June 6, ESPNcricinfo reported. In contrast, KL Rahul is expected to turn out for India A after linking up with the squad on Tuesday. The first Test of the five-match series between India and England is scheduled to begin on June 20 in Leeds. England Lions, who fielded a relatively inexperienced side with only six Test caps in the opening game in Canterbury, are expected to be strengthened by the inclusion of all-rounder Chris Woakes for the Northampton match. For India A, pacer Akash Deep will be available for selection. The right-arm fast bowler had been recovering from a back injury sustained after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year but was declared fit in April and subsequently played in IPL 2025 for the Lucknow Super Giants. Though he was present with the squad during the first unofficial Test, Akash mostly trained on the sidelines, bowling in brief spells during intervals across the four days. The opening match between India A and England Lions ended in a draw on a flat and slow surface in Canterbury, offering little assistance to the bowlers. Among the standout performers for India A were Karun Nair, who struck a double hundred, Dhruv Jurel with two fifties, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhimanyu Easwaran, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, all of whom contributed quick half-centuries in the second innings. All-rounders Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shardul Thakur, both part of India's main Test squad, bowled 14.5 and 28 overs, respectively, in the match and are expected to continue building their workloads in the second unofficial Test. After the Northampton match concludes on June 9, the Indian team will play a closed-door intra-squad fixture against India A in Beckenham. Following that, the senior Test squad will head to Leeds to prepare for the series opener.

ENG vs WI ODI series: Harry Brook relishes ‘fun' start as England captain after West Indies clean sweep

Harry Brook said he was having a 'hell of a lot of fun' as England captain after his first series in permanent charge of the white-ball sides ended in a 3-0 clean sweep of West Indies. England recorded its first One-Day International series whitewash in three years—when it beat the Netherlands by the same scoreline—following a dominant seven-wicket success at the Oval on Tuesday. Brook's men made light of a revised target of 246 after rain reduced the match to 40 overs per side. Jamie Smith, promoted to open this series, launched the run chase with a dynamic 64 off 28 balls as he posted a maiden ODI fifty in front of his Surrey home crowd. Jos Buttler, Brook's predecessor as limited-overs captain, finished the job with 41 not out as England cruised home with more than 10 overs to spare. Yet, England came into this series on a seven-match losing streak in ODI cricket, including a woeful Champions Trophy campaign in Pakistan earlier this year that prompted Buttler's resignation as skipper. 'It's a hell of a lot of fun when you're enjoying it with a lot of mates,' said Brook, whose attention now turns to a three-match T20 series with the West Indies starting at Chester-le-Street on Friday. 'I think we've got such a good side. The depth in batting is amazing and then we've got a lot of skilful bowlers as well.' England was back to its best in the field at the Oval after letting its standards slip at Cardiff on Sunday following a 238-run rout of West Indies in last week's series opener at Edgbaston. That England managed a three-wicket win in Wales that put it an unassailable 2-0 up was largely down to star batter Joe Root's ODI best 166 not out. 'Proper shots' 'I don't feel like we really deserved that win,' said Brook of Sunday's success at Sophia Gardens. 'Our fielding was a little bit sloppy. But because we are so tight as a group, we've managed to scrape a victory there. Obviously, having Joe Root in your side is always a big help.' Smith, who replaced Phil Salt as opener, averaged 17.63 after his first dozen ODI innings. But on Tuesday the batting skill that has helped make him a Test regular was evident. 'He's gone out there and and played extremely well, but he's not a slogger,' Brook said. 'He's playing proper shots, he's putting their bad balls away and he's putting them (the West Indies) under immense pressure.' West Indies recovered from 28 for three and 154 for seven to finish on 251 for nine after arriving late to the Oval because of heavy London traffic . Adil Rashid was the pick of England's attack, with the veteran leg-spinner taking three for 40. 'Rash has got so much skill,' said Brook of his Yorkshire teammate. 'He's a very wily bowler. He's he's been around the block for a while, and he keeps on getting better and better.' Related Topics Harry Brook
