Tottenham Hotspur 1-4 Brighton: Europa League winners fade after fast start

NBC Sports25-05-2025

Recently crowned Europa League winners Tottenham Hotspur began brightly but faded badly en route to a 4-1 defeat to Brighton, their 22nd in the Premier League (most in club history), to close out the 2024-25 season on Sunday.
WATCH — Tottenham Hotspur v Brighton full match replay
Spurs went ahead after just 17 minutes when Dominic Solanke converted from the penalty spot amid a rousing, much-improved start by the home side. It should have been 2-0 in the 38th minute but Bart Verbruggen denied Mathys Tel after Spurs countered and got the 20-year-old one-on-on for a golden opportunity. That moment turned out to be quite pivotal, as Ange Postecoglou's side attempted just one more shot over the final 52 minutes of the game and quickly deflated as soon as Brighton equalized shortly after halftime — hardly a surprising development considering the raucous scenes of their open-top bus parade less than 48 hours earlier.
It was Jack Hinshelwood with Brighton's first and second goals in the 51st and 64th, the latter a clever backheel from close range that wound up being the winner. Matt O'Riley scored from the penalty spot himself in the 88th minute and Diego Gomez added an emphatic exclamation point in stoppage time to score his first PL goal since joining from Inter Miami in January. Gomez uncorked a stunning curler from 30-plus yards out and well wide of the goal, tucked into the top corner at the far post with pinpoint precision.
So, Spurs (38 points) get their trophy, but they finish the league season with just 1 point per game and their worst-ever PL finish (17th) and their worst in the top flight since they were relegated in 1977. Brighton (61 points), meanwhile, finish 8th but miss out on European qualification due to Chelsea coming 4th. Had the Blues finished outside the top-five and won the Europa Conference League, 8th place would have earned a Conference league place next season.

After a terrible season in the Premier League, Ange's much-maligned Spurs beat Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao on Thursday to win their first trophy in over 17 years and their first European trophy since 1984. They showed a pragmatic, sensible side to their play throughout the knockout rounds of the Europa League and have been rewarded with a trophy and a spot in the UEFA Champions League for next season. 'Second season, mate.' But will this be Ange's final game in charge of Spurs? Time will tell but fans of Tottenham Hotspur everywhere are ecstatic to have finally won a trophy. The time for planning for next season can come soon enough but this week is all about celebration, and relief, for Spurs.
Brighton are hoping they will be celebrating European qualification at the end of the season too. Fabian Huzeler's side still have a faint chance of reaching Europe next season as they beat Liverpool 3-2 on Monday to put themselves in pole position to finish eighth in the Premier League table. If they finish in eighth they need Chelsea to finish outside of the top five and also win the UEFA Conference League (they play Real Betis in the final in Wroclaw, Poland next week) to seal a spot in the Conference League for next season. The Seagulls have won three of their last four and if they draw or win at Spurs, all eyes will be on Chelsea.
Tottenham Hotspur team news, focus
Spurs will rest most of their key players for this final game of the season, as the focus will be on celebrating their Europa League success at home with their fans. The last thing they want ahead of a return to the Champions League next season is to lose a key player to injury when they already know they're going to finish in the lower reaches of the Premier League table. It will be intriguing to see what Ange Postecoglou says after the game about his future, as Spurs' leadership team have a big decision to make this summer.
OUT: Dejan Kulusevski (knee - MORE), Dane Scarlett (groin), James Maddison (knee), Lucas Bergvall (ankle), Radu Dragusin (torn ACL - out for season), Timo Werner (hamstring)
Brighton team news, focus
Hurzeler has been battling with injuries to key players all season long and when Brighton are fully-fit they are clearly up there with the 'best of the rest' in the Premier League. They have so many talented attackers and the Seagulls will go at Spurs early to try and settle things by half time, then all eyes will be on the City Ground to see how Chelsea are getting on against Nottingham Forest.
OUT: Georginio Rutter (ankle), Joao Pedro (personal), Ferdi Kadioglu (toe), James Milner (thigh), Solly March (knee) | QUESTIONABLE: Jason Steele (wrist), Tariq Lamptey (knee)
Tottenham Hotspur vs Brighton prediction
Spurs will be in party mode but will still want to finish on a high. This game will be tighter than most expect but Brighton will give themselves a chance of European qualification. Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Brighton.
Diego Gómez collected his first Premier League goal for the exclamation point on Brighton's 4-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
A late penalty set Matt O'Riley up to seal Brighton's win over Tottenham Hotspur. He delivered, tucking it into the corner in the 88th minute.
Jack Hinshelwood's second score of the day is a beauty: His backheel goal just 13 minutes after his equalizer puts Brighton ahead of Tottenham Hotspur, 2-1.
With the ball right by his feet after a wayward Spurs deflection off a corner kick, Jack Hinshelwood flicked it into the back of the net for Brighton's equalizer.
Dominic Solanke makes good on a penalty after being brought down by Mats Wieffer to give Spurs a 1-0 lead early over Brighton.

Liverpool copies Trent Alexander-Arnold move with Johnny Heitenga statement

Liverpool issued a blunt farewell message to Johnny Heitinga after he accepted an offer to become Ajax's new head coach. Heitinga only joined the Reds a year ago, but the chance to take charge of the club he made over 200 appearances for proved too tempting to resist. Advertisement Heitinga, a former Everton defender, has signed a two-year contract with Ajax, ignoring advice from Arne Slot, who had told the 41-year-old to continue his development as coach at Anfield for one more year. "Liverpool FC can confirm John Heitinga is to depart the club to take up the role of Ajax head coach," a Liverpool statement said. "The 41-year-old leaves the Reds after one season in the backroom team, operating as assistant coach to Arne Slot. "Liverpool FC can confirm an offer has been accepted for Trent Alexander-Arnold from Real Madrid for his transfer upon the opening of the June transfer window," a statement published on Friday said. "Alexander-Arnold leaves Liverpool FC with the club appreciative and grateful for his contribution to those successes." Advertisement Heitinga went against Slot's recommendation in taking the Ajax job, after the Liverpool head coach responded to a question about Ajax's interest in him last week by recommending that he should stay on Merseyside for now. 'If Ajax would be smart, they would consider him. He is ready to take on a job like that,' Slot told reporters last week. 'If John is smart, he would stay one more season.'

Three ways Tottenham can line up under Thomas Frank: James Maddison perfect fit; key role for Brennan Johnson

While Ange Postecoglou did eventually adapt his style at Tottenham in their run to Europa League glory, his lack of tactical flexibility was a major issue behind the decline in Premier League form that led to his downfall. But that won't be the case with Thomas Frank. 'Adaptability or tactical flexibility is something I believe a lot in,' said Frank during his seven successful years in charge of Brentford. Advertisement Frank favours a possession-based style of football but the Dane is willing to switch his tactical approach in different scenarios and against different opponents. Brentford played expansive, front-foot football in the Championship but went with a more pragmatic approach after they were promoted to the Premier League. Frank has used a number of different formations at Brentford. Here, Standard Sport looks at how Spurs could line up under their new head coach. Frank's Brentford switched systems fluently (Getty Images) 4-2-3-1 This was a formation Brentford used frequently as they secured a top-half finish last season. Right winger Bryan Mbeumo and striker Yoanna Wissa excelled in the system, scoring 39 Premier League goals between them. Advertisement But Mikkel Damsgaard was the real star as the No10 and was voted the Supporters' Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year at Brentford's end-of-season awards. If Frank is to use such a formation at Spurs then it could play into the hands of James Maddison, who would surely relish a role like Damsgaard's. James Maddison will hope to have a key role under Frank (Getty Images) Maddison has shown flashes of brilliance during his time at Spurs, but he has failed to consistently recreate the form he showed at Leicester. A creative No10 could also help bring the best out of Dominic Solanke upfront and Heung-min Son on the flanks. Possible line-up: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bentancur, Bergvall; Kulusevski, Maddison, Son; Solanke 3-5-2 Frank was more than happy to use a back-three at Brentford, especially when he wanted to frustrate teams. Advertisement The Bees would play direct and hit teams on the counter, utilising the pace offered by the likes of Kevin Schade and Mbeumo. Tottenham have the personnel in their squad to play with a back-three and it could also allow help Frank get Archie Gray into the team. Brentford tried to sign Gray before he joined Spurs last summer and the teenager, or more likely Kevin Danso, could line up in a back-three alongside Cristian Romero (if he is still around) and Micky Van de Ven. Switching to a back-three would be good news for Archie Gray and Kevin Danso (Nick Potts/PA Wire) Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro are both suited to playing as wing-backs, which is another plus of Frank using a 3-5-2 formation. The biggest question would be who partners Solanke upfront, but Son has played through the middle before and a change in position could help him after a mixed season. Advertisement Possible line-up: Vicario; Gray, Romero, Van de Ven; Porro, Kulusevski, Bentancur, Bergvall, Udogie; Solanke, Son 4-3-3 Brentford shifted from a 4-2-3-1 formation to a 4-3-3 system at times last season, and to good effect. When playing with three forwards, Frank often fielded the pacy trio of Mbeumo, Schade and Wissa. A similar set up with Spurs would suit someone like Brennan Johnson, another player Frank tried to sign for Brentford. Johnson is an ideal fit for a wide spot in Frank's counter-attacking 4-3-3 system because of his pace. Frank's plans for Brennan Johnson will be fascinating (AFP via Getty Images) It would also play into the hands of Wilson Odobert, who has only shown glimpses of his potential so far since moving to Spurs. Advertisement The biggest debate in such a system would be who lines up in midfield for Tottenham if they are not playing with a conventional No10. Dejan Kulusevski may find himself as one of two No8s given his athleticism, while Lucas Bergvall could thrive in a similar role after a strong first season. Possible line-up: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Kulusevski, Bentancur, Bergvall; Johnson, Solanke, Odobert.
