Ahmedabad plane crash: DNA confirms identities of 31 victims; 12 bodies handed over
DNA testing has confirmed the identities of 31 victims from the June 12th Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, and 12 families have so far claimed the remains, authorities said on Sunday (June 15, 2025).
Dr. Rajnish Patel, professor of surgery at the government-run B.J. Medical College and Civil Hospital, said DNA matching is still underway for several victims, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was among those killed in the crash.
A total of 242 people — passengers and crew — were on board the London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner when it crashed minutes after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday afternoon. Only one passenger survived the incident. In addition to those on board, several people on the ground, including MBBS students living in the college hostel, were killed in the incident.

To support grieving families and streamline identification and logistics, authorities have deployed 230 teams across the country and coordinated with foreign missions, as many of the victims were foreign nationals.
Earlier on Saturday, Alok Kumar Pandey, Relief Commissioner and Secretary, Revenue Department, the state government had established contact with the families of 11 foreign nationals.
'A total of 230 teams have been formed to establish contact and hand over the mortal remains to the families. We began handing over the bodies today,' he said. Pandey added that the victims from Gujarat hailed from 18 districts and that the administration was also in touch with diplomats of other countries.
The senior IAS officer said death certificates were being issued on the spot to avoid any inconvenience to the families. 'Each body will be escorted to its native place in an ambulance with police protection. Grief counsellors are also being provided to help families cope with the trauma,' he added.

The crash caused a massive fireball that severely damaged a hostel building on the medical college campus, killing several people on the ground, including medical students. So far, 265 bodies have been taken to the civil hospital, although the final death toll has yet to be confirmed. Only one passenger, a British national, survived the tragic accident. Vijay Rupani served as the Chief Minister of Gujarat from August 2016 till September 2021. His death in the tragic accident has brought shock and grief to the state. DNA tests identify 47 victims of Ahmedabad plane crash
Three days after a London-bound Air India plane crashed in Ahmedabad, authorities here have so far identified 47 victims through DNA testing and bodies of 24 have been handed over to their families, an official said on Sunday. As many of the bodies were burnt beyond recognition or damaged otherwise, authorities are carrying out DNA tests to establish the identity of victims of the horrific tragedy. "A total of 47 plane crash victims have been identified so far through DNA matching. Of these, bodies of 24 victims have been handed over to the respective families. These deceased were from Rajasthan and different parts of Gujarat," Additional Civil Superintendent Dr Rajnish Patel told reporters. All but one of the 242 passengers and crew on board the Boeing 787-8 (AI171) and another 29 persons, including five MBBS students, on the ground were killed in the plane crash on Thursday. The aircraft crashed into the campus of a medical college in Meghaninagar moments after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:39pm on Thursday.

AI 171 crash: 22 more DNA samples of victims matched, says Gujarat minister Sanghavi
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 15 (ANI): Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi on Sunday said that 22 more deceased in the AI 171 plane crash in Ahmedabad have had their DNA samples matched. With this he said that a total of 42 deceased in the tragedy have been identified so far through DNA sampling. 'Update as of 1.00 pm- From 9 PM last night to 1 PM today, our teams have worked tirelessly to match DNA samples. We are pleased to report that an additional 22 DNA samples have been matched, bringing the total to 42 matched DNA samples so far,' Sanghavi said in a post on X today. 'Ongoing Efforts: State Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) unit team and National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) team are working through the night to match more DNA samples,' he said. Sanghvi said that former Chief Minister Late Vijay Rupani's DNA had also been matched. By 9 PM on Saturday, 19 samples had been matched, with the state home minister sharing regular updates regarding DNA sampling of the victims. Addressing a press conference at the residence of former Gujarat CM Rupani, Sanghavi said, 'Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani lost his life during the Air India crash in Ahmedabad on 12th June. Today, at around 11:10 AM, his DNA has matched. He worked for the people of the state for several years..,' The state Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) unit and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) team are working through the night to match more DNA samples.
