India handed narrow 3-4 defeat by Argentina in FIH Hockey Pro League
Amstelveen [Netherlands], June 12 (ANI): The Indian Men's Hockey Team put on a very spirited display against Argentina, but went down narrowly with the scores at 3-4 in their FIH Hockey Pro League 2024/25 (Men's) game, at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands. For India, Harmanpreet Singh (12', 33') netted twice whilst Abhishek (42') added a third. For Argentina, the goals came from Matias Rey (3'), Lucas Martinez (17'), Santiago Tarazona (34') and Lucio Mendez (46'). With all to play for, it was Argentina who came out of the blocks quicker than India. And the early pressure paid off as Matias Rey (3') was on hand to fire the Argentine side into the lead. After that, the Indian Men's Hockey Team absorbed the pressure and started to build in attack, causing their opponents some moments of worry. India continued to push for the equaliser, and just before the break, it was Harmanpreet Singh (12') who smashed it home, to end the quarter at 1-1, as per the Hockey India (HI) press release. The Indian Men's Hockey Team were looking to build momentum in the second quarter, but Argentina had other plans. Lucas Martinez (17') scored an early goal to put India under some pressure. However, the Indian Men's Hockey Team fought back as they went on the hunt for a second equaliser. But Argentina managed to hold on despite the waves of attack from India, and went into half-time with the lead. Early in the third quarter, Mandeep Singh earned a penalty stroke for India, and Captain Harmanpreet Singh (33') stepped up and hammered it into the bottom corner. India were back on level terms with Argentina. However, within a minute, Argentina responded with a third goal of their own as Santiago Tarazona (34') found the back of the net. From then on in, India started to up the ante, and pushed Argentina back into their own half. The continued pressure eventually paid off, as Abhishek (42') hit it into the roof of the net to make it 3-3, just before the end of the quarter. The final quarter also had a quick start, as Argentina found a way through India's defence and Lucio Mendez (46') finished it off from close range. In the final phase of the match, India gave it their all in attack, as they marched on in the hunt for another equaliser. The Indian Men's Hockey Team, though, could not conjure up a fourth goal, and came away with a 3-4 defeat. India is currently fourth in the points tally, having accumulated 15 points from 11 games. They will be next seen in action against Argentina on June 12. (ANI)

Image: Hockey India Amstelveen (The Netherlands): Sloppy defending cost the Indian men's hockey team dearly as it went down 3-4 to Argentina, slumping to its third consecutive defeat in the European leg of the FIH Pro League here on Wednesday. India had earlier lost 1-2 and 2-3 against Olympic champions Netherlands here. On Wednesday, the Indian defence were caught off guard by the Los Leones as they scored through skipper Matias Rey (3rd minute), Lucas Martinez (17th), Santiago Tarazona (34th) and Lucio Mendez (46th) to scure the win. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD India's goals were scored by skipper Harmanpreet Singh (12th, 33rd) and Abhishek (42nd). After back-to-back defeats against Netherlands, the Indians started positively and had the better share of possession in the first quarter. But it was Argentina who took the lead in the third minute through captain Matias Rey, courtesy an unforced error from Indian defender Amit Rohidas. Trailing, India, however, pressed hard and dominated the remaining of the quarter and finally restored parity in the 12th minute when skipper Harmanpreet converted a penalty – the team's first penalty corner – as both the teams were locked 1-1 at the end of the first quarter. Argentina, however, were the better side on display in the second quarter and took the lead again two minutes into the quarter when Martinez scored from top of the circle, courtesy again a defensive error from Rohidas. While the Indians used the ariel ball to perfection, unforced errors and sloppy defending proved to be their undoing. Three minutes after the change of ends, India equalised through a penalty stroke conversion by Harmanpreet, his second goal of the day. But India's joy was shortlived as 60 seconds later another defensive lapse cost the Harmanpreet-led side dearly when Tarazona pounced upon a mistake to hand his side the lead again. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Argentina secured their first penalty corner soon but India defended stoutly. India pressed hard and secured their second penalty corner in the 39th minute but failed to utilise the chance. In the 42nd minute, Abhishek equalised for India, scoring from a rebound after Jarmanpreet Singh's initial shot from top of the circle was saved by Argentina goalkeeper Tomas Satiago. But it was heartbreak for India 18 seconds into the final quarter when Mendez scored to hand his side the decisive lead, courtesy another defensive lapse from the Indian backline. India had another chance to equalise when they were awarded a penalty corner in the 55th minute but wasted the opportunity. With three-and-a-half-minutes remaining and trailing by a goal, India withdrew their goalkeeper for an extra field player but that move didn't yield any result. India will again play Argentina in a return leg match here on Thursday.

Indian junior women's hockey team beats Belgium 2-1 during European tour
Antwerp [Belgium], June 11 (ANI): The Indian junior women's hockey team continued their winning streak in the tour of Europe with a well-deserved win over Belgium. On Tuesday, India edged past the Belgian side with a tight scoreline of 2-1 at the Hockey Centre of Excellence, Wilrijkse Plein in Antwerp, Belgium. Lalthantluangi (35') and Geeta Yadav (50') scored goals for India, as per a press release from Hockey India. The first half remained goalless as both sides could not manage to break the deadlock in the tight contest. In the 35th minute, India finally scored the opening goal as Lalthantluangi successfully converted a fortunate penalty stroke. In the last quarter, Van Hellemont (48') scored the equaliser through a field goal for Belgium. However, just two minutes later, Geeta Yadav replied with a field goal herself and grabbed the winner for India. India then defended well to fend off the Belgian attacks in the final 10 minutes of the game and ensured they enjoyed another win over Belgium. After two consecutive wins, the Indian Junior Women's Hockey Team will next play Belgium for the third and final time in their Tour of Europe on June 12. The Indian junior hockey team continued their international campaign with a five-match European tour from June 8-17, as a part of which they are taking on Belgium, Australia, and the Netherlands. The team, which recently concluded a promising outing at the Four Nations Tournament in Rosario, Argentina, started the tour with three matches against Belgium at the Hockey Centre of Excellence, Wilrijkse Plein, in Antwerp. They will then face Australia at Beerschot Tennis Hockey Padel Club, in Kontich, before wrapping up the tour with a match against the Netherlands at Hockey Club Kampong, in Utrecht. In Argentina, the Indian side delivered strong performances against quality opposition. They registered a 2-1 win and a 2-2 (2-3 shootout) loss against Chile, earned a 1-1 (2-0 shootout) win and a 2-4 loss against hosts Argentina, and defeated Uruguay twice -- 3-2 and 2-2 (3-1 shootout). The tour served as an important step in the team's preparations, offering valuable lessons in handling high-pressure scenarios and adapting to different playing styles. Notably, these matches are also a key part of India's preparation for the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Hockey Women's Junior World Cup 2025, scheduled to take place in Santiago, Chile, in December 2025. Facing strong international opponents in varied conditions will help fine-tune the squad's combinations, build match temperament, and instil the confidence required to perform on the world stage.
