Inside F1's biggest feud & Max Verstappen and George Russell's sour relationship

Daily Mirror4 days ago

Whenever there is a spat in Formula 1 these days, more often than not it's the same two men at the centre of it. Max Verstappen is no stranger to rubbing people up the wrong way but it's more surprising that George Russell, usually a more sedate, measured character, is the one who ends up clashing with the Dutchman the most.
They have known each other since they were children – both are 27, Verstappen 138 days older than his British rival. In 2012, they were both winners in the European Karting Championship held in Lincolnshire. Last September, Russell posted a photo of them celebrating with each other as teenagers.
But things have soured in recent years, particularly since Russell stepped up to Mercedes and began to compete with Verstappen at the sharp end of the F1 grid.
The first major clash came at the 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix when Russell punched a hole in the sidepod of Verstappen's Red Bull during the Sprint race. The latter waited for Russell in the pit lane to confront him, leading to a tense argument on TV at the end of which the Dutchman called his rival a "d***head".
But the real fireworks came last December, starting with a grid penalty for Verstappen at the Qatar Grand Prix after impeding Russell during qualifying. He won the race anyway but was clearly still seething, telling reporters after the race that he had "never seen someone trying to screw me over that hard".
It all kicked off a week later in Abu Dhabi, the season finale, when Verstappen claimed Russell had "lied" to the Qatar stewards to get him penalised. That made the Brit snap – he and boss Toto Wolff spent an entire media session in the Mercedes hospitality unit "setting the record straight".
The highlight was Russell claiming that Verstappen had threatened to "put my head in the f***ing wall". He also said: "I think [Verstappen] has been enabled because nobody stood up to him. Lewis [Hamilton] stood up to him in 2021 and Lewis lost that championship unfairly."
Still, despite that history, he was surprised by Verstappen's petulance in Barcelona on Sunday. What the f***?" he asked over the radio before telling Sky Sports afterwards that he had not expected his rival to pull a stunt like that.
Instagram
But the fact Verstappen was penalised and dropped to 10th, doing significant damage to his own title chances, allowed Russell to take the moral high ground. "Ultimately, I came home in P4 and he came home in P10," he said pointedly.
In modern F1, where driver relationships are more cordial than ever, what happens on track is usually quickly forgotten. The exception seems to be when it involves these two, with little love lost there despite having known each other for half their lives. It's hardly a Senna vs Prost level rivalry but, if one day Verstappen and Russell end up being direct title rivals, that could certainly change.

David Beckham reaction to knighthood joke in front of King Charles says it all

David Beckham and his wife Victoria are reportedly set to be given knighthoods in King Charles' Birthday Honours List next week, with Sir Rod Stewart's brutal joke seemingly coming true Sir Rod Stewart's light-hearted prediction about David Beckham's getting a knighthood - made right in front of King Charles - looks to be coming true. Reports have emerged that Beckham is set to receive a knighthood in the King's upcoming Birthday Honours. The former England footballer had previously been considered for the merit several times, but was never included on the final list. In 2017, Beckham's apparent disappointment at being overlooked became public when a trove of contentious emails - allegedly from him - were leaked. ‌ Bearing that history in mind, Stewart, who was knighted in 2016 for his contributions to music and philanthropy, made a playful jab at Beckham during an event they attended alongside the British monarch. ‌ During the award presentation at a ceremony for 'The King's Foundation', Stewart quipped in front of the King: "I am also wonderfully honoured to be a knight, and David, yours is coming soon." Beckham, amused, was seen smiling and shaking his head, taking the joke in good spirits - even in the King's presence. Now, new reports indicate that Stewart's prediction was accurate. According to The Sun, Beckham will officially become a 'Sir' next week, while Victoria Beckham is expected to be styled as "Lady Beckham". The 50-year-old was named an ambassador to the King's Foundation last year, further solidifying his relationship with the royal family. Recent public moments suggest a friendly rapport between Beckham and the King. At the Chelsea Flower Show last month, the King asked Beckham: "You got it, didn't you?" referring to a birthday gift. Beckham responded: "It was incredible, thank you. It was very kind." Beyond his footballing achievements in England - 115 caps for the Three Lions, plus various trophy-laden stints at Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain - Beckham has made a mark as a football executive, co-founding Inter Miami in MLS, home to Lionel Messi. ‌ He has also championed numerous charitable causes, particularly through UNICEF, and was awarded an OBE in 2003. However, it has taken over two decades for that to be elevated to knighthood. His prospects took a hit in 2017 following the publication of controversial emails allegedly written by him. One message reportedly said he "didn't care about being knighted," and another read: "It's a disgrace to be honest and if I was American I would of [sic] got something like this 10 years ago." ‌ Beckham later claimed some of the messages had been tampered with. A friend told the Mirror at the time: "To be honest, he does feel that he has given so much to his country... you don't really mean it. "While he was frustrated in those emails, he was over it the moment he sent them. Getting the knighthood is not what his work is about. He doesn't care if he gets a knighthood or not." Typically, honours recipients are notified weeks in advance, so Beckham and his wife may already know of the honour. Liverpool sealing second summer signing as highly-rated Hungarian star to join

Arne Slot is set to add a number of new faces to his squad this summer with deals in the pipeline for Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Armin Pecsi all in the pipeline for Liverpool Liverpool are aiming to seal the signing of Hungarian goalkeeper Armin Pecsi from Puskas Akademia for £1.5m. The 20-year-old stopper is seen as one for the future and is set to play for the under-21s from next season. But he will be given chances to impress Reds boss Arne Slot with regular training sessions alongside first-team goalkeeper Alisson Becker and new signing Giorgi Mamardashvili. It is suggested that his current club, Puskas Akademia, will receive a record fee for the young starlet, who is set to fly to Merseyside in the coming days to formalise his switch. ‌ Pecsi is a product of Puskas' academy and has gone on to make 52 appearances in all competitions for the club, keeping 15 clean sheets. He has also clocked up five appearances for the Hungary under-21 side. ‌ Pecsi could potentially become the third Hungarian in Liverpool 's squad next season. The Reds already have Dominik Szoboszlai at their disposal and want to add another player the midfielder knows reasonably well. The Premier League champions are chasing a deal for Milos Kerkez: the Bournemouth star had been identified as an ideal addition to Liverpool's defence, albeit Andoni Iraola's side have reportedly set a £45m asking price for the left-back. Fellow defender Andy Robertson has already spoken about the prospect of being replaced in favour of Kerkez. Speaking to BBC Scotland, he said: "We're not daft, it looks as if a deal could potentially be done. "But, until that is done, I've not even given that a second thought. I back myself. I've got confidence in my own ability and that drives me forward. "I've had eight fantastic years at Liverpool in terms of winning trophies and being a mainstay in the team, which I'm incredibly proud of. ‌ "I'm not getting any younger. I can't change my age, but I still believe I've got a lot to give and that's what I focus on. I focus on myself - you can't focus on other people or who you're competing with." Liverpool have already made an addition to their defence this summer with the signing of Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong. They are still chasing his teammate Florian Wirtz, who would likely break the British transfer record should he too complete a move to Anfield over the coming weeks. Outgoings could also be on the agenda with Federico Chiesa looking likely to depart. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
