Former US Open champion Marin Cilic and former junior world number ones Nicolai Budkov Kjaer and Martin Landaluce will be among those competing for the Lexus Nottingham Open title, with the men's entry list confirmed today by the LTA.
2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic, who reached a career-high of number three in the world in 2018, has a history on British grass, claiming the title in 2018 at the Queen's Club in London and reaching the 2017 men's singles final at The Championships, Wimbledon.
Norway's Budkov Kjaer, 18, has already shown an aptitude for grass, having claimed the junior boys' singles title at Wimbledon in 2024, and has made a good start to his professional career in 2025, claiming his first Challenger title at the Lexus British Pro Series in Glasgow in February.
He is joined by Spain's Martin Landaluce, who last year became the youngest Spaniard to win an ATP Challenger title since a certain Rafael Nadal.
Amy Hitchinson, Tournament Director of the Lexus Nottingham Open, said, 'Two former junior world number ones and a grand slam champion in an already packed men's lineup guarantees spectators will be treated to some really exciting tennis over the course of the week.
'Whether it's their first year on the tour or their 20th, every player in the field is a fierce competitor, and they will give it their all to get their hands on the trophy.'
Budkov Kjaier and Landaluce are not the only young guns looking for their maiden grass-court title in Nottingham.
21-year-old Italian Luca Nardi, the highest-ranked player in the field, goes for his eighth Challenger title in total, whilst Frenchman Arthur Cazaux, who lost out to Andy Murray in the final in Nottingham in 2023, returns to the East Midlands to try and go one step further.
American Chris Eubanks, a former world number 29 and Wimbledon quarter finalist in 2023, will also feature at the Lexus Nottingham Tennis Centre, whilst Britain's Jay Clarke, who recently claimed his first ATP Challenger title since 2022 in North Macedonia, has also committed to the event. The full entry list can be found on the LTA website.
The entry list for the women's event was released earlier in May, confirming 2022 champion and former top ten player Beatriz Haddad Maia will feature alongside Britain's Katie Boulter, who returns seeking a third consecutive title at her home event.
Tickets are still available for this year's Lexus Nottingham Open, with Centre Court tickets starting from just £13, grounds admission tickets starting from £12 for adults and kids go free, available to purchase on the LTA website.

Volunteers spent 25 years building a WWI replica plane. It just took flight.

Last month, a replica World War One plane finally took to the skies above a Royal Air Force station in Scotland. It's been a long time coming—volunteers at the Aviation Preservation Society of Scotland have been working on the project for 25 years, as originally reported by the BBC. 'Every single nut and bolt has been checked, every single bracket has been checked, every single piece of wire has been checked. You don't cobble these things together. When you're going to fly it, it has to be done right,' chairman Mike Harper told the BBC. 'If it was for a museum, if it was just going on display we would probably have finished it within a few years. But the meticulous attention to detail to get this thing in the air is what's taken the length of time.' The plane is a Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter, a biplane (a type of aircraft with two stacked wings) fighter aircraft the British designed in 1914, built in 1915, and tested in 1916 in response to Germany's monoplane aircraft, the Fokker Eindecker. Though the planes were 'modestly successful,' they quickly became obsolete in the face of Germany's new Albatros aircrafts. The name Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter comes from the unique arrangement of its struts (the thin beams that support the top wings), though the society's volunteers have more sensibly nicknamed their replica 'Sophie.' For now, Sophie is undergoing test flights. Once it completes the test phase and accomplishes five flight hours, it'll be allowed to carry an additional person in the passenger seat behind the pilot, per the BBC. 'I'm used to flying modern aeroplanes from the 50s and 60s—the classics—and they're very different from this aeroplane to fly. This is very much more of a challenge,' aircraft inspector Tim Rayner, who pilots the test flights, told the BBC after May's 15-minute flight. 'The controls are nowhere near as responsive as they became as we developed better technologies. This is 1915 and it's not that many years since the first flight so you've got to look at it as flying as you would expect for an aircraft of that era.' Talk about an ambitious hobby.

David Beckham to Receive Knighthood

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." David Beckham is set to be awarded a knighthood in King Charles's annual birthday honors, which will be revealed next week. BBC Sport first reported the news, though a government spokesperson declined to comment on 'speculation on honours.' After he is knighted, he will be Sir David, and his wife Victoria will become 'Lady Victoria.' Beckham was appointed an officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2003, and in the years since, has emphasized his ties to the British royal family. 'I've always been a huge royalist, I was brought up in a family and household that adored and loved everything with the royal family,' he said. 'When the King asked me to part of his foundation, I was very honored, very privileged, I rang my mum straight away.' She 'burst into tears,' Beckham shared. 'She knows my grandparents would have been proud that I have played such an important role in the royal family and the charities that they have.' He's made numerous appearance recently with King Charles and Prince William, and last year, attended a State Banquet at Buckingham Palace. When Queen Elizabeth passed away, he was one of thousands who queued to pay their respects as the late monarch laid in state. 'The most special moment for me was to receive my OBE. I took my grandparents with me, who were the ones that really brought me up to be a huge royalist and a fan of the royal family, and obviously I had my wife there as well,' he shared upon the Queen's passing. 'To step up, to get my honor, but then also Her Majesty, to ask questions, to talk, I was so lucky that I was able to have a few moments like that in my life, to be around Her Majesty. Because we can all see with the love that has been shown, how special she is and how special she was and the legacy that she leaves behind.' Beckham played for Manchester United and the England national team, including playing 59 games as captain. He helped Manchester United win six Premier League championships, and also played for Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain. Beckham will join a small list of former football players to be knighted. You Might Also Like 12 Weekend Getaway Spas For Every Type of Occasion 13 Beauty Tools to Up Your At-Home Facial Game

Arise Sir David! Beckham to be awarded a knighthood by King Charles, according to media reports

Associated Press LONDON (AP) — David Beckham, the former England soccer captain who has been an ambassador for the U.N. children's fund for two decades, is to receive a knighthood in next week's honors list from King Charles III, according to U.K. media reports Friday. Without citing sources, the BBC said Beckham is set to receive further recognition both for his soccer career, and his contributions to British society. The knighthood will make Beckham 'Sir David' while his wife since 1999, former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, will become 'Lady Beckham.' In 2003, Beckham was awarded the Order of the British Empire, or OBE, for services to soccer. Victoria Beckham got the same honor for services to the fashion industry in a later New Year Honours list. Honors are awarded twice a year, once at New Year's, and then in June to mark the king's birthday. They are mostly made on the recommendation of the government, though the monarch has input too. Prime Minister Keir Starmer's office would not confirm the press reports, as is custom. Buckingham Palace declined to comment. The Associated Press has not been able to independently confirm the award of the knighthood, which was first reported in The Sun tabloid newspaper. In video footage published by The Sun from the Chelsea Flower Show earlier this month, the king is seen asking Beckham if he 'received his 50th birthday present.' The King appeared to say 'I'm glad it got to you,' with Beckham responding: 'It was incredible, thank you, it was very kind.' Beckham and the king have crossed paths on numerous occasions, including at state functions. Last year, Beckham became an ambassador for The King's Foundation, an educational and sustainability charity Charles launched in 1990. Beckham, who is clearly a patriot, is the only English soccer player to score at three different World Cups and his illustrious career included the treble-winning campaign of 1999, when Manchester United won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League. With 115 appearances for the England national team, Beckham is third in the all-time list. He also captained the side on 59 occasions. After leaving Manchester United 2003, Beckham played for Real Madrid, Los Angeles Galaxy and Paris Saint-Germain. He now co-owns the MLS team Inter Miami. His career wasn't always a high, though. After the 1998 World Cup in France, Beckham was widely vilified for his petulant kick of Argentina player Diego Simeone, which saw him sent off. Many fans blamed him for England's exit. In 2023's Netflix documentary series 'Beckham,' he described the abuse he experienced, which included an effigy of him hanging from a noose outside a London pub. 'I knew it was bad at the time, but going over that whole thing was quite a tough one,' he told the AP. The four-part documentary series about Beckham's life and professional career scored him an Emmy in 2024 for outstanding documentary or non-fiction series. Beckham has been a style icon and celebrity and has been a prominent supporter of charities, including UNICEF, which created 'The David Beckham UNICEF Fund' in 2015 to mark a decade's partnership between the two. Beckham also played a pivotal role in London being awarded the Summer Olympic Games in 2012. If the knighthood is confirmed, Beckham would join an elite group of British soccer players to have been knighted, including England's 1966 World Cup winners, Geoff Hurst and Bobby Charlton, and Scotland's Kenny Dalglish. recommended in this topic
