Intel Gives Laptop Gamers A Free Performance Boost

Intel is delivering a driver update which should see laptop owners and handheld gamers get a significant boost in graphics performance.
The update is specifically for the Intel Core Ultra 2ooV processors, codenamed Lunar Lake. These are something of an oddity in the Intel line-up, being the only processors to have memory integrated into the processor package, and the only ones to contain the Intel Arc 130V and 140V graphics chips.
Although those graphic chips are about as good as you get from integrated Intel GPUs, they're very much at the lower end of gaming performance. Indeed, Intel says the benefits of the new drivers will be primarily felt under the common default power level of 17W, which means they're not really competing with dedicated Nvidia or AMD graphics chips.
Nevertheless, a free performance boost is always welcome, with Intel claiming that the new driver will, on average, deliver around 10% more frames per second than its predecessor.
What does this actually mean in practice? Intel has benchmarked the new driver on a series of well-known games, although not using a laptop where these chips are normally found, but with the MSI Claw 8 AI+ handheld gaming console.
At the bottom end of the scale, average frame rates in Black Myth: Wukong's benchmarking tool improved from 36fps to 41fps, helping to make the demanding game smoother and more playable, although not exactly lifting it into the flawless performance category. Cyberpunk 2077 improved from 49fps to 52 fps.
The biggest improvements were seen in Payday 3, where average frame rates jumped from 79fps to 89fps, and DOTA 2, which leapt from 81fps to 94fps. Fortnite also saw a sizeable jump from 89fps to 105fps.
The slightly disappointing news for gamers with the Intel Core Ultra 2ooV in their laptops or handhelds is they'll probably have to wait a while longer for the new drivers to arrive.
The update is available now for the MSI Claw 8 AI+ and Claw 7 AI+ handhelds, but others will have to wait for validation with the hardware manufacturers. The update will be available from the Intel website.

Nvidia's Arm-based PC chip could make its debut in Alienware's laptops later this year or in early 2026, according to a report from the Taiwanese publication United Daily News. The chipmaking giant is reportedly working with MediaTek to develop an accelerated processing unit (APU) that combines an Arm-powered CPU with Nvidia's Blackwell GPU architecture. Nvidia is already popular in traditional gaming laptops using Intel or AMD chips, but an Arm CPU entry may well improve the Windows on Arm gaming situation. Qualcomm's Snapdragon X chips have to run games emulated using Microsoft's Prism software, and game compatibility and performance is severely limited on Qualcomm's GPUs right now. We first heard rumors about Nvidia's Arm-based chip in 2023, which could serve as yet another competitor to Intel's chips and the Arm processors built by Qualcomm. Last week, a video from YouTuber Moore's Law is Dead showed off what appears to be a leaked image of Nvidia's rumored APU, with sources suggesting it could run between 80W and 120W. In January, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said during an investor's presentation that the company has 'plans' for the Arm-based CPU installed inside Digits, its personal AI supercomputer, Reuters reported at the time. Dell CEO Michael Dell also hinted at the possibility of launching an AI PC with Nvidia, as he replied, 'come back next year' when asked about Nvidia's presence in the AI PC market during an interview in 2024. Nvidia isn't the only company that could challenge Qualcomm's dominance in the Arm-based CPU space. MediaTek is also rumored to be working on an Arm chip of its own, while recent reports also suggest AMD is developing an Arm-based chip for Microsoft Surface laptops.

The next big breakthrough in AI could be one that channels the spirit of famed scientist Albert Einstein. "The problem is that large language models [LLMs] make mistakes. And they're always going to make mistakes, but they're going to make fewer and fewer. At some point, they'll make so few mistakes you can use it in medicine, you can use it in law," Groq founder and CEO Jonathan Ross said on Yahoo Finance's Opening Bid podcast (watch above; listen-only below). This embedded content is not available in your region. Ross said the ability of AI models to invent is among the next wave coming, and it's likely to happen within his lifetime. Currently, LLMs tend to pick the most probable answer to questions, which precludes them from discovering something new. "And if it's the most obvious, it's not going to be good writing. It's not going to be good science. It's not going to invent something for you. It's not going to invent a drug that isn't known. That's what we're working on next. Invention is next," Ross explained. While at Google (GOOG, GOOGL), Ross designed the custom chips that the tech giant would go on to use for training its AI models. Today, Ross has a ground-floor view into how LLMs are likely to continue to evolve in the years ahead. Groq makes what it calls language processing units (LPUs). These LPUs are designed to make large language models run faster and more efficiently than Nvidia's (NVDA) GPUs, which target training LLMs. By making them run faster and more efficiently, Groq's chips can help LLMs on their road to becoming inventive rather than just using reasoning, as ChatGPT and other chatbots do today. Groq's last capital raise came in August 2024, when it raised $640 million from companies including BlackRock (BLK) and Cisco (CSCO). The company's valuation at the time stood at $2.8 billion, a fraction of Nvidia's more than $3 trillion market cap. It currently clocks in at $3.5 billion, according to Yahoo Finance's private markets data.
