Greg Chappel's Huge Praise For Virat Kohli: 'He Eclipses Sachin Tendulkar In...'

News1812-05-2025

Greg Chappell has described Virat Kohli as the 'most Australian non-Australian cricketer' for his tenacity, demanding nature and leading India's 'unapologetic' transformation. The former Australia great, who coached India during some of Tendulkar's best years, said Kohli at the time of his Test retirement announcement on Monday (April 12), eclipses the Master Blaster in 'cultural influence' on the country's cricketing identity.
'Virat Kohli is the most Australian non-Australian cricketer we've ever seen. He was – a snarling warrior in whites, never giving an inch, always demanding more. Not just of his bowlers, his fielders or his opposition, but first and foremost, of himself," he said.

"He deserved a spot in batting line-up": Pat Cummins on Cameron Green's spot in WTC final playing 11

London [UK], June 10 (ANI): Ahead of their clash against South Africa (SA) in the World Test Championship Final 2025, on June 11 Australia captain Pat Cummins believed that Aussie batter Camreon Green earned a spot in the batting lineup due to his recent good form, and the team thought batting at number three would suit him well. 'Cam Green, the last few weeks he's had, coming back in great form, we thought he deserved a spot in the batting line-up. We thought three probably suits him best. And then, with Marnus moving, we thought it's one spot up really. It's not too different to batting three. He's done well here in England in the past,' Pat Cummins said as quoted from ESPNcricinfo. Cummins believed that Australian selectors are giving Marnus Labuschagne more opportunities because he has played a crucial role in getting the team to where they are now, and they are rewarding his contributions. 'I think our selectors are probably showing that they're happy to give someone an extra little run rather than pull the pin too early. He's [Marnus Labuschagne] played some crucial knocks in getting us here. Look back at the MCG [against India], his batting was right up there as a difference in that match. I think it's part of rewarding those guys who have got us here,' he added. Labuschagne has made only 935 runs in 36 innings with a best score of 111 at an average of 28.33, including a century and eight fifties, in the ongoing WTC cycle. Green will play his first Test since back surgery, while Beau Webster retains his spot in the XI and will provide the bowlers some support with his medium pace and spin options. Australia hasn't lost a Test series in the past two years, winning away in New Zealand and Sri Lanka while retaining the Ashes in England in 2023. They also defeated Pakistan and India at home, along with a draw against the West Indies, to secure a spot in the WTC decider against the Proteas. With Australia entering their second consecutive WTC final and South Africa making their first appearance, the stakes couldn't be higher. Australia playing 11 for WTC Final: 1. Usman Khawaja, 2. Marnus Labuschagne, 3. Cameron Green, 4. Steve Smith, 5. Travis Head, 6. Beau Webster, 7. Alex Carey (wk), 8. Pat Cummins (c), 9. Mitchell Starc, 10. Nathan Lyon, 11. Josh Hazlewood. (ANI)

"Swing in England conditions gives us an opportunity": South Africa captain Temba Bavuma ahead of WTC final clash

London [UK] June 10 (ANI): Ahead of their clash against Australia in the World Test Championship Final 2025, on June 11 at the Home of Cricket Lord's South Africa captain Temba Bavuma believed that the swinging ball in England conditions offers an opportunity for his team, as it differs from both Australian and South African conditions. 'With the swinging ball, [it's] very different to Australian conditions. Different to South African conditions as well. So that gives us an opportunity,' Temba Bavuma said as quoted from ESPNcricinfo. Bavuma will be playing one of the biggest Tests of his life, aiming to win his country's first-ever world title during the WTC final against Australia at Lord's on June 11. The Proteas skipper also believed both teams have formidable bowling attacks and felt the real opportunity is within the two batting lineups, how they give their bowlers a score to bowl at. 'I think both teams have formidable bowling attacks. I think the real opportunity is within the two batting line-ups and how they are able to kind of front up and give their bowlers a score to bowl at,' he added. In 63 Tests so far, Bavuma has scored 3,606 runs at an average of 37.95, with four centuries and 24 fifties, with the best score of 172 after 108 innings. In this ongoing WTC 2023-25 cycle, Bavuma has scored 609 runs in seven Tests at an average of 60.90, with two centuries and four fifties. His best score is 113. South Africa is eyeing their maiden ICC title in the longest format and has assembled a formidable unit with a potent pace attack and a determined batting order. On the other hand, Pat Cummins-led Australia enters this WTC Final having clinched the previous WTC title by defeating India in the final. They followed this up with a historic ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 triumph, once again overcoming India in the decider on Indian soil. South Africa playing XI for WTC final: Temba Bavuma (c), Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Wiaan Mulder, Tristan Stubbs, David Bedingham, Kyle Verrynne, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi. WTC final: Pat Cummins won't be surprised if English fans support South Africa

Australia captain Pat Cummins has said he is not expecting a fully partisan crowd at Lord's when his side takes on South Africa in the final of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC), starting Wednesday, 11 June. Speaking on the eve of the match in London, Cummins acknowledged that some English fans might support South Africa, given the fierce nature of recent contests between England and match marks Australia's return to England for a Test match for the first time since the intense 2023 Ashes series. During the second Test of that series at Lord's, Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey was at the centre of controversy after the stumping of England's Jonny Bairstow, an incident that drew sharp criticism from English fans. Carey was subsequently booed in the remaining Tests, with Australia facing a hostile atmosphere for the rest of the Australia have not enjoyed significant support in England due to the historic Ashes rivalry. However, Cummins noted the strong presence of travelling Australian fans in London. "Probably, yeah, hard to know [if neutrals will support South Africa]. There's a lot of Aussies here in London, so I'm sure there'll be lots of Aussies out there, lots of South African fans as well. And yeah, wouldn't be surprised if the English have a few supporting South Africa as well. But yeah, we'll wait and see," Cummins said at the pre-match press TO BE BACK AT LORD'S: CUMMINSadvertisementThe Australian captain joked about enjoying the calm at Lord's while the stadium remained empty, and highlighted his team's strong record at the 2010, Australia have won three Tests at Lord's and lost just one. That includes the controversial 2023 Ashes Test, which Australia won by 43 runs under Cummins' batter Steve Smith is expected to play a key role in the final, given his prolific record at the iconic ground. Smith has scored 525 runs in five matches at Lord's, including two centuries and two fifties.'Yeah, great few days. Maybe there's no crowds – that helps – but it's always good to be back here,' Cummins said with a smile.'It's such an iconic ground and we do enjoy playing over here. Someone like Smithy has scored a lot of runs here – over the past three or four Ashes series and Test matches. I think we've either won or come close to winning every Test. So yeah, it's a place we like playing at. Even in white-ball cricket, we've had some success here as well,' he confirmed their playing XI on Tuesday, naming Marnus Labuschagne as a makeshift opener alongside Usman Khawaja. All-rounder Cameron Green returns to the line-up, while pacer Josh Hazlewood has been selected ahead of Scott Boland to complete the pace trio. You May Also Like
