Santa Ono Blocked From Becoming University of Florida's President
Florida officials on Tuesday rejected the candidacy of Santa Ono to lead the University of Florida, after he had been accused of leniency toward pro-Palestinian protesters while he served as president of the University of Michigan.
The University of Florida's board unanimously approved Mr. Ono last week, but the state's Board of Governors, which oversees the sprawling State University of System of Florida, did not ratify his selection.
Republicans celebrated the unexpected move. Mr. Ono had already given notice that he would be leaving his job in Michigan.
But in recent weeks he had been criticized by some conservatives in the state over his past stances on diversity and inclusion programs, although he wrote an opinion essay disavowing them.
'There's too much smoke with Santa Ono,' Representative Jimmy Patronis, a Florida Republican, wrote on social media. 'We need a leader, not a DEI acolyte. Leave the Ann Arbor thinking in Ann Arbor.'
Mr. Ono could not be immediately reached for comment. The University of Florida also did not immediately respond.

‘Very disappointed in Elon': Trump, Musk spar amid continued criticism of ‘big beautiful' megabill
President Donald Trump publicly chastised Elon Musk — his onetime adviser and a major political benefactor — on Thursday, amid the Tesla CEO's continued attempts to take down the cornerstone of Republicans' legislative agenda. Responding to a question about Musk's posts during a bilateral meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the White House, Trump said he was 'surprised' and 'disappointed' by Musk's attacks. 'Elon and I had a great relationship,' Trump told reporters. 'I don't know if we will anymore.' He later said he was 'very disappointed in Elon' and that 'I've helped Elon a lot.' Musk has been on a three-day rampage against Republicans' reconciliation package in Congress. Earlier on Thursday, he needled Trump directly for the first time — resurfacing old social media posts in which Trump said he was 'embarrassed' by Republican efforts to extend the debt limit. Musk shared the posts on X, which he owns, adding his own facetious approval.

Trump Suggests Elon Musk Has 'Trump Derangement Syndrome' As Alliance Publicly Implodes
President Donald Trump said he was blindsided by Elon Musk's criticism of his policy bill Thursday, commenting on the feud for the first time moments after Musk made his most pointed attack on Trump over the legislation, prompting Musk to respond in a series of X posts. Trump told reporters Thursday in an Oval Office press conference that Musk 'hasn't said anything about me that's bad' and that he'd 'rather have him criticize me than the bill,' appearing not to have seen Musk's tweet moments earlier calling out Trump for flip-flopping his stance on raising the federal debt limit. Trump commented on the disagreement with his one-time ally for the first time Thursday, suggesting Musk opposes the legislation because he is 'upset' the electric vehicle mandate was removed. Musk didn't reject the accusation in a tweet responding to Trump, writing it was 'very unfair!!' that oil and gas subsidies were left in the bill, adding in a subsequent tweet 'this bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!' Trump also suggested Musk is suffering from what he refers to as 'Trump derangement syndrome,' which he describes as people turning on the president after they leave his administration. Earlier Thursday, Musk reposted a 2013 tweet from Trump that said he was in disbelief and 'embarrassed' Republicans were extending the debt ceiling, captioning the repost 'wise words,' calling Trump out for saying Wednesday the debt limit should be 'entirely scrapped' as a provision of his 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act,' which would raise the debt ceiling ahead of its expected expiration date in August. Musk—who left his White House role Friday—has fired off dozens of tweets this week attacking Trump's policy bill over the amount it's expected to add to the federal debt.
