Road closures, construction impacting drivers in East Tennessee this weekend
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — From Chalk Walk to the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon to ongoing projects across the region, 6 News anchor Bo Williams has what East Tennessee drivers need to know before hitting the roads this weekend.
Major road closures for the marathon will begin at 7:20 a.m. on Sunday and will be in place through 2:30 p.m. The Clinch Avenue viaduct, the start for all the races, will be closed from 1 p.m. on Saturday until 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. To see the full list of road closures, click here.
Investigation underway after four injured in shooting outside West Knoxville bar
The Tennessee Department of Transportation has issued its weekly construction report for April 4 through April 9, detailing ongoing and upcoming construction activities. This report includes information about lane closures and road work across 24 East Tennessee counties.

Starting on April 4, the Market Square weekend pedestrian zone on Union Avenue and Market Square will go into effect two hours earlier at 4 p.m. on Fridays and continue through 6 p.m. on Sundays. To learn more about the pedestrian zone, click here.
Chalk Walk is on April 5 and is expected to draw thousands of people to downtown. It will begin at 8 a.m. and run through 7:30 p.m. in Market Square.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) — Governor Bill Lee announced Friday that Deputy Governor and Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) Butch Eley is stepping away from his role in the third quarter of 2025 after nearly seven years of leadership. Eley has been a key figure in advancing infrastructure, financial stewardship and government modernization across the state, according to a news release. 'It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve Governor Lee and the people of Tennessee,' Eley said in the release. 'From building long-term systems that better serve Tennesseans, to navigating some of our state's toughest challenges, I'm deeply proud of what we've accomplished. This moment marks not an end, but a pause—a chance to ensure a smooth transition and reflect on how I can continue to make an impact in new ways.' Local agencies warn of DMV text message scam Eley described the decision as a transition to step away from government to spend more time with his family. Under his role as TDOT Commissioner, Eley reportedly launched the following initiatives: Introduced Tennessee's first Public-Private Partnership (P3) initiatives to modernize project delivery and increase innovation by engaging the private sector. Pioneered alternative delivery models to improve project speed and efficiency, improving service for taxpayers. Created the first-ever fiscally constrained 10-year project plan, bringing unprecedented transparency and accountability to state transportation investments. Secured dedicated, recurring General Fund dollars for transportation for the first time in TDOT's history to ensure an additional and sustainable revenue stream to help meet Tennessee's infrastructure needs in the decades to come. Led the single-largest infrastructure investment in state history with the I-55 bridge over the Mississippi replacement project. Commenced the state's first performance-based maintenance contract, engaging the private sector with outlined metrics to establish clear and objective standards for how our roads should look to motorists. 'Since I decided to run for Governor, Deputy Governor Eley has served as one of my most trusted advisors,' Governor Bill Lee said in the release. Whataburger to open Knoxville location on Cumberland Avenue
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Whataburger is one step closer to opening in East Tennessee, as a business license was spotted on a storefront on Cumberland Avenue in Knoxville. The City of Knoxville business license, issued on March 19, placed the new business at 1830 Cumberland Avenue. USDA inspects livestock for flesh-eating parasite in Strawberry Plains The news comes just a few months after a privately-owned franchisee in East Tennessee and North Alabama, MWB Restaurants, included future locations for the Texas-based chain in Knoxville and Chattanooga on their website. For more than 75 years, Whataburger has been known for its famous burgers and 'Fancy Ketchup.' In 1950, the chain opened its first location in Corpus Christi, Texas, and since has grown to include more than 1,000 locations across a dozen states. Second Harvest continues to feel federal cuts impact ahead of summer months Until the opening of the Whataburger on Cumberland Avenue, those with a craving that only a Whataburger can suffice will have to visit the next closest location in Hermitage, which is approximately 169 miles away. MDOT suspends traffic restrictions for holiday weekend
LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is suspending work and lifting traffic restrictions on projects across the state to ease Memorial Day travel. reports that 92 of the 158 projects will see some level of alteration to accommodate the massive number of travelers expected this holiday weekend. The American Automobile Association () estimates that more than 1.3 million Michigan residents are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home, a slight increase from last year. MDOT says that although some equipment and traffic configurations will remain over the weekend, suspending construction operations improves safety for workers and motorists. 'Across Michigan, we are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy, helping Michiganders go to work, drop their kids off at school and run errands safely,' said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in a news release sent to 6 News. 'Everyone at MDOT fully understands how frustrating construction can be for drivers, but for everyone's safety in work zones, including your own, follow the law, be patient and help make sure everyone makes it home each and every night. Road workers and the ones you love are all counting on you,' said State Transportation Director Bradley C. Wieferich in a news release sent to 6 News.
